Oh wait is this the one with Emma Thompson as Mrs. Lovett?
I don't know why I replied that to you
I got too excited
yessss she's amazing too
this is vocal porn, i can't handle it
I've only seen the opening of this, which in itself was amazing
I've been meaning to watch the rest
the full proshot is on youtube i think
Notes:

Filmed:
March 5-8, 2014

Bryn Terfel really shouldn't fit here but his opera voice just works so well for Sweeney
i think his acting is a bit weak in some places but his voice is just π€©
ahh i just got to him singing my friends/pretty women π
oh i forgot i had this open and my ears just got blasted by Ramin's voice π
i feel like there's less acting to do with the roles he does in opera lol its like <intense singing!> i watched him in the ring cycle
he is such a good Enjolras!
haha that's true tbf
||why the jo bro for marius tho π ||
Les Mis is one I still haven't seen live ||because I'm not sure if I trust myself not to just cry through half of it||
oh you will. ||especially by the end π||
i want to see it but i dont want to see the concert version!

Performed by Norm Lewis and Alfie Boe
Idk, maybe I just want Les Mis to live in my head as the soundtrack and
any drew sarich fans π this is making me remember his stint as javert in the 2006 revival
poor bb singing a baritone part. he is not built for that π
he sings so well π i HAVE to watch him as the phantom some time
the funny thing is that his christine - sierra - was ariel to his king triton
OMG some of my friends got to meet norm a few weeks ago and he signed his autograph to someone as 'sing, my angel of music' normmm
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eg_f36h_D18 required watching: norm and sierra about 5 mins in

This week, Sierra Boggess shows us what Norm Lewis is cooking up backstage at "The Phantom of the Opera." Spoiler alert: it's dinner!
ohhh i've seen these for other musicals, i love these
sierra's are all hilarious! ali ewoldt did another one for phantom a little while after
howdy folks
do you like theatre too? π
never got into it much.
aww she's amazing in these lol
But some tunes from musicals are some of the most classic tunes and an assortment of them are among my favorite songs.
Currently listening to some old Jimmie Rodgers!
@eternal aurora @timid sorrel are there any other musicals you'd recommend? my musical playlist is starting to get rusty π
tanz!
what years does your musical playlist range from?
elisabeth too. hmm only thinking of german ones
Many of the old songs I listen to originate from musicals or at least film soundtracks that were just covered by other bands. (copyright laws were far less strict back then).
yeston/kopit phantom but in korean so you can't understand the cringe lyrics it literally makes it 10 times better!
oh the majority of them are recent so i'm sure it won't tickle your fancy lol. the oldest one on my playlist is the 1994 recording of Jekyll & Hyde https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7Bew5VcYs4lljFPmtOIBX1?si=8fe6298536464b65
but most of them are 2010s
I was wondering cause I wanted to know if my reccomendations would "tickle your fancy" haha
I'm a big fan of A Chorus Line if you haven't seen that. Bigtime 70s camp if you listen to the soundtrack, 80s camp if you watch the movie, but it's equal parts funny and touching
oops i'm wrong. i forgot i had 1776 on here
anastasia has some nice songs! once upon a december
gets stuck in my head all the time
I love Miss Saigon!
I never really thought about how much of a fanbase musicals have
ohh do you have secret garden on there π i bet you do
haha i gotta link The video
oooh i've seen clips of Miss Saigon!! two of my favourite broadway singers sung in that
My favorite male duet from one of my favorite musicals, "The Secret Garden", sung by Anthony Warlow and Philip Quast in a concert, in 1995 or 1996.
Eva? π
yes... i love eva noblezada so much π
ah! evita
Am I not seeing any Rent on this?
If so, also Rent
she's a star tbh, i love her jimmy's award performance still π i'm excited to see her and jeremy jordan in the great gatsby
sadly you are not. i'm a new wave theatre kid so most of the musicals i've watched are late 2010s π
I love their voices so far!
yes i saw that! i'm so happy for her!
yeah they are amazing!
especially the first man
also she got engaged to her co-star on Hadestown, that is iconic
If you're down for weird, Jesus Christ Superstar
Lea Salonga was the second, her performance as Eponine in Les Mis is amazing
drew sarich singing any part is
I LOVE Lea, she is incredible
my fair lady, sunday in the park with george are some older ones to check out!
Ditto on My Fair Lady for classic musicals
is Sunday in the Park with George from Sondheim? if so then definitely will put on my list
Obviously Sound of Music, West Side Story
YES
Fiddler on the Roof is another good classic
oh yes!!
I'll stop myself there, I could do this forever
i cryyy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RH881wNdCec What do y'all think about this? I personally love both the band and especially the singer who is also a historical hottie!

see, you're giving good suggestions and my brain is only supplying cursed ones. do not waste your time on lestat: the musical, alex! π
Absolutely do not
And don't look up the Phantom of the Opera sequel either
Better to pretend it doesn't exist
i watched the film version not too long ago!! soo good
i'm surprised you've never met a theatre kid before lol
Ok scratch that, don't watch it, just watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pfz-_WxGu3Y&t=56s
Let me show you the beauty underneath.

honestly me too
I'm honestly just trying to remember musicals I went through intense obsessions with as a child/teen and recommending those
company has some classic songs
Has anyone said Moulin Rouge??
oh man i've heard of so many of these suggestions, i am so missing out
No, but I'm not a big fan of jukebox musicals admittedly
moulin rouge movie though
not musical which totally changes some things
Fair, me either normally but Moulin Rouge just π€
https://youtu.be/syM0JtapQ4Q oklahoma - they tried to be as close to the original production and they did a great job! (part 2 is up too)
The University of North Carolina School of the Arts does a painstaking recreation of Oklahoma as it premiered in 1943.
I saw the thumbnail and title I was about to go crazy if that was acutally enhances footage from 43 hahahahah!
Fred Astaire performs "You're All The World To Me" in the 1951 musical "Royal Wedding".
haha nah but they i'm impressed at what they did to copy it
oklahoma is definitely a lot darker than i thought it was going to be and of course the song gets stuck in my head
I was thinking of adding Oklahoma to my list earlier. I don't think it's as top tier as some of the other classics, but it is good
I literally love them so much.
oooh this looks interesting! i've been getting into older musicals too, there are some really faithful Gilbert & Sullivan productions that really hold up
yeah i was thinking of 'what are some classics alex should watch for their musical education' haha!
Pirates of Penzance β€οΈ
Oh yeah Oklahoma should definitely be a watch/listen at least once
Guys and Dolls I'd also put in this category. Possibly Anything Goes
Guys and dolls is one of my favorites
Cant talk about musicals without Fred Astaire lol
woah. did not know Sinatra was in Guys and Dolls π€― https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HL9lhzvQV1M
This movie was made over 60 years ago and the play is older than that, and not much has changed when it comes to guys and dolls!
And Marlon Brando, who I had no idea could sing
Though to be fair, it was a very bold move to make your singing debut on film opposite Sinatra. It... well, you can decide
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvKojv7olKk An example I was talking about of a cover of a musical number. This tune was a cover from a Fred Astaire Ginger Rogers film but Henry Hall's rendition is better IMO.
Are you interrested in Dutch, Flemish,French, English German ore foreighn popular music, from the period from about 1900 till 1960 please subscribe my channel, you can heare many thousands of records all from my own collection ! Sorry for the sometimes poor soundquality ! Greetings from Henk !!!!!
everyone has their own opinions
but there definitely is a reason why Sinatra got so popular
indeed but I just prefered Bing's voice
Has anyone seen the musical Some Like It Hot? I'm only just reading about it now and it's kind of blowing my mind a bit because there was already a musical adaptation of Some Like It Hot called Sugar
Wondering how different they are
oh another musical i've been meaning to watch. i am totally in love with Andrew Rannells https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVJgmp2Tc2s

TV on the Radio is a Brooklyn based band that was formed in 2001. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRgpcRCwmU8 A great find I just happened upon! This was a musical group during the 20's and 30's who were from my hometown!
Recording of the Drake Sisters singing Winter Wonderland. These sisters belonged to a group from Henderson County and performed in the 1920s and 1930s. This is an update from Cheryl Pujadas: The back two are Dottie on left and Becky on the right. The front three are left Dixie, middle is Bunny, right is Joy. The other sister Tee, never sang.

Is hometown where you're born or where you're raised?
I'm thinking raised yeah?
IE the hospital where I was born was 40 minutes from where I lived
I would say hometown is where you grew up & birthplace is where you were born
i totally forgot what channel i was in and thought you were asking an actual question

It was mentioned above that a band was from their hometown and it got me thinking

What is y'alls favorite era in music if you have one? (it can be genre specific eras too.)
probably a heretic to say this, but honestly, early 2000s x)
50s - early 60s probably. Just before the Beatles and stuff came along, though their stuff is really good too!
Roughly 20s-50s. Mostly has to do with the specific artist.
Swing music
Ella Fitzgerald
Frank Sinatra
Louis Armstrong
Couple others where itβs like one random song I like from them
Also a couple modern day bands like Caravan Palace
definitely 90s. a lot of innovative grunge/rock bands back then
Is Warped Tour an era
80s to 2000s Argentine rock
So not really a specific era
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuls26I5siY Forgot how good this song was
Also fun fact Jimmy Carter was alive to witness all of these.
I've done something similar with this video before but it was his first "Hail to the Chief" after the oath of office. many have suggested making the latter as well. and before that I made the last one at the funeral, and this is his last "Hail to the Chief" as President of the United States, from President Harry Truman attending Dwight Eisenhowe...
In my opinion I would chose the great depression years. Even amongst jazz people the depression is just seen as the birth of swing which is overlooking many of the greatest examples of popular and jazz music of the century and especially the pre rock age!

Really. I thought the vocals were cool when the dude just straight up roared but the music was mid. Also what a neat idea to do "modified" vocals in metal which LDOH was one of the pioneers of grindcore and many in the genre have since used that idea.
Some of their later stuff has the music drastically changed up in a style that a buddy of mine fittingly called snare abuse.

I never got into Grindcore all that much likely cause I never got I to punk nor hardcore. The one grindcore album I really like is world downfall by terrorizer!
im not an aficionado by any means, i can only handle it for so long before i need a timeout, but i like the normal screaming/yelling over some of the pig squeals and etc
Fair. I never got into the pig squeals but the extreme vocals I like are when it sounds like roars haha!
ok pals, this is your album cover. what is the name of your band and the name of your album?

do you get free tickets?
Most epic job of anyone else here. Also how big is the arena? I am wondering if there have been any metal shows that you have produced?
How's Elwood, I haven't seen them play since Hill died
Epic. From who I wonder if you remember?
I work with over 100 bands every year. Probably easier if you ask me specifics
In Death metal who have you had there?
Again, Iβve been working concerts for around 20 years with several hundred artists per year. Tell me some death metal you like, Iβm not a machine that can rattle off everything Iβve ever done.
How about recent death metal shows within 2024
What did I just say??? lolol
nevermind yeesh.
I donβt own any venues, I work for a large promoter and I cover shows all over the southeast region.
Interesting
Have you done shows in Bon Secours wellness arena in Greeville SC
Or the Harrah's cherokee center in Asheville NC
I havenβt done any arenas in the Carolinas but in my touring days Iβd go to clubs Charlotte and Chapel Hill
ahh
Did you ever do any stadium shows?
I have my first one later this year
i mainly follow the UK indie scene so i can't really think of any to ask π
how about Modest Mouse? or The Front Bottoms?
Modest Mouse, yes
I worked at an indie rock club for years. I came up in the punk and diy scene
ohh no way
did you ever work with Killswitch Engage? they are a great indie rock band, pretty dated though
Killswitch Engage is dated π΄
my favourite KE album was released a year before i was born πΆ
Their cover of Holy Diver was better than the original and no one can convince me otherwise
YES!

Wait really? I've heard a couple different versions but I thought pretty much every kid growing up in the US would know that song

I have a "songs to make you cry" playlist on Spotify.
Supermarket Flowers by Ed Sheeran is one. Lucy by Skillet and If I Die Young both hit hard for me because they both played on the radio the morning after I learned a friend of mine had died when we were 13.
In high school, my drama teacher made the mistake of asking us to pick a ballad and analyze it and its themes. We would also listen to the song before doing the PowerPoint.
Well, for some reason, our entire class of 12 kids (except for like 1 or 2) picked the saddest ballads in the entire world history of songwriting. Elvis Presley's In the Ghetto, Sarah McLachlan's Angel, Randy Travis's Three Wooden Crosses, Pearl Jam's Last Kiss...
This was a 90 MINUTE CLASS. I think we all trauma bonded that day.
If you're wondering what I picked, of course it was Concrete Angel by Martina McBride. π

I've got a Travis Tritt showing coming up so I was revisiting this hilarious nugget from history.... you youngin's wouldn't remember but in 1992 Billy Ray Cyrus swept the nation with his hit Achey Breaky Heart. (This is 100% why we have Miley Cyrus today) The song was a certified hit and exploded into the main stream. There was a good bit of drama, however, from the more traditional country artists that thought his music didn't deserve the label of country music. Travis Tritt was one of the outspoken critics.
So in this video, there's a lot of really amazing things happening... 1. Motley Crue, a hair metal band, is introducing this coutry award. They were absolutely in the height of their addiction days and then 2. The absolute shade that Billly Ray throws at the end of his speech by directly firing shots at Travis Tritt who released a popular song the year before called, Here's a Quarter (Call Someone who Cares)

Motley Crue presents the award for Favorite Country Single award to Billy Ray Cyrus for his song "Achy Breaky Heart" at the American Music Awards 1993. He thanks his record label, his band, his producers, his family, and his fans.

SO GREAT!

mrs bald and i are big fans
I knew who to call in π
His new album isn't my fave, but I loved Purgatory & Long Violent History. Even some of the "weirder" stuff on Country Squire is good.
And he has some songs that didn't make it on an album, but were only recorded live that are really fantastic.
I liked his vibe on stage big time
Yeah, I'm sure it was a great show!
I've been fighting my country blood my entire life. Now i'm just embrassing it on my own terms. At least there's alt-country peeps I can get behind
Took a shot from the nose bleeds. Fun fact, I make sure everyone has a good seat or else I work to relocate them before they even arrive. This seat was sold as limited view and I wanted to make sure it wasnβt completely obstructed
You donβt always know if a seat is going to be good or not until their set is brought in. Lots of variables and unknowns until they are in your venue building their show.
Look, I plug her every chance I get so I've probably told you already, but please check out Bella White. I think you'd like her.

Iβm so Nashville adjacent I get a LOT of Americana stuff I have no interest in. But this is not that. Iβve always enjoyed old country.
Yeah, if thats the case & you want to try some more Tyler Childers, you'd probably prefer Country Squire over Purgatory. Its the more similar album to his new stuff.

ooh. have you ever done shows with him before?
I thought Hozier was one of the best shows I've ever seen. It was all the vibes
Nope! First one
I would be doing two of his shows this year except we also have Neil Young playing on the same day and I wanted to get to work that one again
Have you seen Neil Young in concert?
Yes, twice! Luke Nelson and the Promise of the Real was his backing band. This upcoming show is with Crazy Horse
Ah I saw him with Luke Nelson too! Except at Farm Aid π
Mine was Desert Trip
He also came out with Paul and sang Give Peace a Chance
That was probably the most incredible event Iβve worked. And it was two weekends so I got to do it all twice
Youβll have to tell me what you think. He is coming here in august so I wanna know if I should buy tickets
Hozier is probably one of the kindest musicians I've ever met. Which was before his solo career though, I've no clue how his solo shows are live
you've met Hozier???? woah
The other best show I've seen was probably Bon Jovi in 99
Even my kid self could recognize how great he was
My best show was Rammstein at the O2 π
I don't really go to huge concerts, generally more small local bands
biggest show I've been to (that was pretty awesome) was Ska-P, which I bet most people here wouldn't know π

I love small shows / local shows. That's so much more of the vibe. I'm past festivals, heck sometimes I feel like i'm at chair status

i stumbled onto this a few months ago and it made me fall in love with opera
have we already enthused about opera i cannot remember π
ohhh yess
i just had to think about my very first live opera
you got any favourites?
Cavalleria Rusticana, La Traviata, Die ZauberflΓΆte, Die WalkΓΌre
we have about Bryn Terfel but i don't think we've ever talked about general opera π©
yesss die walkΓΌre was my first live opera
im going to play excerpts from Cavalleria and Traviata in orchestra soon, im excited β¨ rehearsals start on monday
mine was elisir d'amore!
my very on brand first one I had listened to as a whole is Wozzeck π€£
Oy, Berg. 12 tone is definitely not my thing.
How about a Cage opera? Maybe an opera version of 4'33"?
OPERA VERSION OF 433π€£
sounds good to me π
I tend to like Berg and Schoenberg's stuff, moreso than Webern and some later integral serialist stuff like Babbitt
Some of Ruth Crawford Seeger's music seems fun though, e.g. if I had another year worth of oboe I would probably wanna try to learn her diaphonic suite #1 bc it seems fun and quite hard
(RCS is also notable for integral serialist stuff, though I don't think that piece is. Also yes she is the mother of those Seegers!)
Neil Young + Crazy Horse
ugh yes! was it everything?
it's been a very long day and it ain't over yet!
it hilariously started at 5 in the mornign for me when crew members from another band at another even started caling me because they were given my phone number as their over night contact. I'm not even in the same state as them.
Im a big Fan of Berg πΆβπ«οΈ
Berg is kinda the romantic of the viennese school and often at the border to tonality and romanticism
And imo this style of music is the ideal for this story of wozzeck

One of the Best moments in wozzeck
I love Berg!
When I taught I took my high school students to see Lulu. It was great.
pdf if you don't have a sub
You studied music?
Im a Student of musicology rn, and last Semester, i already wrote my second paper on wozzeck, and a fellow Student did Lulu, including a 30 Minutes presentation
I was a musician before I was disabled about a decade ago. After college I spent a few years as well teaching high school students in NYC - we had a partnership with the Met so I used to take kids to the opera a bunch. Sex, drugs, murder. It's a good introduction to classical music.
And yeah, did conservatory, the whole shebang. But can't listen any more so I won't have much intelligent to say about music :D. That creative part of my brain is now being used for genealogy π
Ohh which instrument(s) did you play? And thats sad :/
Oh that's OK. And I was never amazing at music history, so I'm always impressed by musicologists.
I live in probably one of the Best regions for Opera and concerts i guess
Germany?
Yeah, and also in germany one of the better areas
Yeah you definitely have us beat. I would have loved to study in Germany but I couldn't figure it out.
I can easily go to the Opera in Halle(Saale), Leipzig opera and semperoper in Dresden
And of course gewandhaus
Also I think your prices are much better than here, though I don't really know.
But being Not too far from the met must also be nice
They have extremely nice productions
I live in Leipzig rn and the more i get into the music life here, the more Problems i get with it
Yes, and with the program for students we could go for free. And because I got a reputation for being able to organize things very quickly they would give me many tickets over the limit. They would call and say "we have 200 tickets to La Traviata next week, do you want them?" and I would start running around the school trying to make it happen.
Omgggg how cool is that
I also knew musicians in the orchestra so we would have people come up and talk to the students during intermission. One thing I loved about Berg was that he wasn't less accessible than Verdi and at least in Lulu there was MUCH more murder.
It was more interesting for them
And because he's still within that romantic framework it kind of felt like weird movie music to them I think.
I think 20th century or late 19th is a way better introduction to Opera than earlier verdi or classical Opera for most people
I introduced 3 friends to Opera with Verdis otello last year and one with elektra tvis year and it worked well
If my parents were having a rough time they loved to go to the opera because "you can fall asleep and you wake up and they're still singing and nothing has happened in the story"
Ive kinda have a Problem with how conservative the big Institutions (Opera and gewandhaus) are in Leipzig, although Opera is worse atm
They're not wrong π
Well that just means that you have to create your own institutions and connect in with people who are making things that fit with your musical values
Im playing in an amateur orchestra, and we do 6-7 concerts a year in the gewandhaus, and i guess that orchestra brings more to the music life in Leipzig than the gewandhaus
The university orchestra too although they just do 2 concerts a year
There was a World Premiere of an opera in Dresden in February, i went to See it the same month and it was sooo cool
Wish there were more New operas here

ooooh Elektra would be a fun one for a first opera π
from the audience
probably very intimidating from the pit or stage π€£
i love Verdi!!! π
i've always wanted to watch Otello
Yeah otello is sooo cool
This is the absolute perfect Regiethater production
Im not sure but i think i even prefer this over what Wagner wrote as stage directions
And a lot of my favourite singers are in this production
I hope to go to bayreuth some time in my life
Late response, but yeah I met Hozier. Probably about 2010 I think? He still sang with Irish choir AnΓΊna at the time, and I was having a cd autographed by as many singers as possible. Spoke to him for about 5 minutes. Mostly remember that he was kind, and that he was tall, and that I kept trying to look beside him as I was waiting for a particular other choral member who had left (and didnβt come back lmao) and then it took me several years to realise Andrew Hozier Byrne and Hozier were the same person. Though it thankfully took my sister until a couple years ago to figure it out, so I wasnβt the only one not having had a clue about meeting him.
Oh, this all happened in a small countryside theatre, in the town of Winterswijk π
that would be so cool
its absolutely worth every cent imo
i hope i can go there again next year, depends on whether anyone of my friends goes with me or not
So we all excited for Eurovision 2024?!

Slight correction, Nemo uses they/them pronouns, which matters in general but their song is about their identity, thus especially relevant here.

yay! We're not broke!
the UK never gets any points π’
hey you have 30 now!
250 more to go for top 5
it could be worse
you could be estonia with 4 points
Poor Estonia
hear me out, next year every time you vote you have to record a video message that says "[your country here] 12 points go to [country you vote for]" and every country's chosen completely at random
and you could be the lucky winner to announce your points
||and we get rid of the awkward singing announcements||
voting this year was brutal
idk I think the cringe videos are part of the campy charm of Eurovision
yoooo Ukraine mentioned

i honestly didnt know they did anything besides the fox song
They had a few other chuckle-worthy songs, and are currently moguls on Norwegian TV. I keep getting YT video recs of them competing on Norwegian Taskmaster
For any Chappell Roan listeners here, what are your favourite songs? I had to listen to The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess a couple times over, but I think I've landed on Guilty Pleasure being my favourite right now
I find it musically really itches the right spot in my brain, especially that yodeling π
It also really resonated with me since it really perfectly captured how it felt when I fell in love with my boyfriend
I like the popular ones -- Casual & Good Luck Babe -- but I really like Kaleidoscope too
Favorite has to be Pink Pony Club. Iβve mentioned it before but it means a lot to me because I was raised in the rural Midwest, so I relate.

anyone here collect vinyl?
I don't buy any but I snatched my parents vinyl collection. I have my dad's Black Sabbath and my mom's Rocky Horror Picture Show albums. Explains so much why I turned out the way I have
Do you collect?
@timid sorrel has recently gotten into it
i was talking with a friend and they peer pressured nudged me into starting π
i have a local record place near me so i'm gonna go scope out their prices tomorrow
i have always wanted to collect!! it's just sooo expensive
One time I grabbed an old shirt out of my dad's closet to dye my hair in. I went downstairs and my dad was like.. what are you doing? And he's like please don't dye your hair in that original 1970s Grateful Dead shirt please.
@ivory pawn π definitely check eBay and resale places online/in person too - a lot of people sell on eBay with the attitude of βI just wanna get rid of thisβ and donβt check sale prices. If there is something youβre interested in and canβt seem to find, set eBay alerts up for when something gets listed. And local charity/thrift stores usually have them tucked away by the CDs. Iβm not sure how the UK is regarding thrift stores, but here Goodwill is a vinyl goldmine, especially if you start to poke around in a few towns around you.
π my grandfather had thousands upon thousands of vinyls in his basement very carefully organized and restored. It was my first job as a kid - data entry to catalogue what he had so he wouldnβt buy duplicates, and going to the resale shop with the printed list to find new ones and check to see if it was βmintβ or not. Not saying you have to go that hard π I only have a few handful things now, but nothing from his collection. When he died, my dad and his brother threw everything out and only saved a handful of OG Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, and Elvis records that Iβll probably never see π BUT donβt sleep on EBay and your local resale shops π
The reprints sold for list price are so expensive and marked up because of the recent hype surrounding it. If youβre interested in investing in a collection for resale or value, poke around for the original stuff ||if you donβt care either way - and just wanna collect for the fun and find music you enjoy, look for bulk sales of more modern stuff and you might have luck finding a deal!||
ahhhh thank you so much!
i actually went to a thrift store today and saw some vinyls/CDs, this is partly what instigated it π
Ooooo π yes !! Itβs a slippery slope π₯²
Once I get a more permanent base I definitely want to get back into it again. Vinyl is also uhhh very heavy to move π a typical tub holds like 100, and thatβs easily 100 pounds π fyi for your future back since youβre still a small bean
there is a guy in my town who gave out free vinyl records during COVID!! i really gotta visit his store, i know he has a ton of vinyls
thank you for the heads up π
Oooo!!! Definitely do that! Iβm sure heβs got excellent prices! Also also estate sales? Idk if theyβre a thing there
A lot of families donβt wanna deal with figuring out where to take them, so just sell them as part of an estate and/or donate to local vinyl stores too. So I bet he gets a ton at his store through that too
hoping so!!
will lyk when i come back
i saw a $50 vinyl player online and i will definitely buy that if there isn't anything cheaper near me
i don't think they're as popular here as they are in the US
Vinyl
Here is our humble setup. Also check discogs too for things. We found one volume seller there that sells for quite cheap and the records are like mint (obv older stuff)
I found my grandmaβs collection this weekend π I want this one
(Btw happy bday Alex!! β€οΈ)
Look for some used vintage ones near you! Theyβre probably better than the new cheap ones and hopefully similarly priced?
oooo this looks great!!
(side note π i just realised i'm a little bit of a vinyl noob) -- do vinyl players need speakers to play?
No but you might need to sit real close
||you can usually hear just from the needle going over the grooves||
Some have them built in. Ive only heard one like that, a suitcase player (avoid..) and it wasnβt great π©
oh that's another good point, what's the difference between suitcase players and regular vinyls? i'm guessing quality?
i think suitcase players can put more wear on the records? the record isnt supported like typical players
yeah that sounds about right π and if i'm gunning for a cheap one, i'll probably have to hold the player up to my ear
ah i see, that's pretty bad!! i was about to buy a suitcase player so thanks for letting me know π©
this is why i'm hoping you can find some vintage setup from someone's estate sale or something π©
but also! my husband is a super audiophile and this is who i'm hearing all this from, so ymmv
(i did hear the suitcase player myself though - my son's 7 year old friend has one for her taylor swift records! she's so cool - and it was not great listening π¦ )
she has a vinyl player at 7 years old?? π€―
right? like how did she learn about this? π
Resale shops have records all the time and cheap
Especially the ones that get donated materials
That 7 year old is goals π©
With cheaper vinyl players, you will generally still need something to amplify the sound with, and then a speaker. Today, slightly more expensive players usually have a built-in amplifier, which means you don't need more additional stuff as you usually have some kind of speaker
Maybe this guy can also help you find / give some tips on finding a decent cheap record player in your area π
he did! π
sadly he does not sell record players but he gave me some great advice:
- stay away from suitcase players
- avoid built in speakers since they usually have poor quality
- Audio Technica/Lenco are usually good choices for starting out
(which is good because i was eyeing up a cheap AT player on eBay π)
Yay! Happy to hear that π do you have any speakers?
i don't have any spares π¦
i have some that i use for my PC though
We have an audio technica one! πππ
@ivory pawn What kind of music are you interested in? I've been slowly collecting for a bit over a few years & just got a decent haul when my in-laws neighbors moved - they just just gave me free pick of their whole collection & donated the rest. Its a fun hobby!
would probably be easier to list the types of music i don't like π
Ok I hear you π
What's at the top of your "need to get" list?
haha, i was just deliberating this earlier
top 3 would probably AC/DC, Queen, and Nirvana
Solid picks.
after this i'll probably just buy anything that interests me, maybe support some indie artists
I don't know how much you like 70s-80s stuff, but i find that a lot of the more popular records in that era are usually easy to find for not too over the top prices
Modern vinyl + the large bands are typically more expensive (but I only know the Dutch vinyl market)
Something from like Coltrane or Mingus or Dolphy or someone would be fun!
I am entirely unbiased as a bass clarinetist for dolphy rec
We just got some Coltrane π recommend
ok yall i just went down a huge vinyl rabbit hole π©
if i plug my vinyl player straight into a receiver w/ phono support that should be fine right?
@scenic fractal @warped rose Do you recognize these people? I'll give you a clue. It's 2000.
They're also dying in USA heat
I don't! A couple of them look familiar.
lol yes
2 lads from westlife brian mcfadden and shane filan. my sister grew up listening to all the boybands so embarrassingly i know them all
It had to be so weird for them because no one in the US knew who they were but they were such a big deal back home and in Europe
is this like the 'my canadian model girlfriend that nobodys ever met' thing
The same year, they were like one of the first openers for this day festival I went to. No one here had a clue who they were
I think the US at the time didn't have room for one more boy band
all our teenagers were out of wallspace, come back next decade plz

Sure do!
I've been fortunate enough to catch her at the Caverns (during the filming of the PBS special) in Grundy County, TN and at the Ryman.

90s song of the day
Post your favorite fall song or album. Go! π π π
Start us off Jen, I need examples of what constitutes a fall song/album
I mean I could be basic and go βTis Autumn by Nat King Coleβ¦
For more modern tunes, pretty much anything by Hozier (especially shoutout his Unreal Unearth album) or Bon Iver
folklore-era Taylor is great too
Anything Neil Young
My personal favorite fall/autumn at night car music https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lQnk8HV1zAZPhr5aNPeNZbWDVxiWOAZUk&si=FqukFi17NizkWccc
I didn't realize people didn't have "fall music" π In my mind, that's just a thing, like how Summer is boppy happy music. Fall music is folky or moody or minor key music. but maybe other people interpret that differently or not at all!
Live - Throwing Copper
Autumn Leaves, in G Minor, at 110 bpm-
for a non jazz shitposty reply, even if autumn leaves is in fact a good song the first thing I can think of with fall or autumn in a title is this thing by Milhaud https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQHk4km1Pww but I generally don't associate stuff with a certain season when listening to it rip
I would have had a more fun random thing to suggest for summer based on name alone though, Samuel Barber's Summer Music. ||my "jokingly call a jazz standard like at a jam session" joke would have probably been summertime which is also nice though||

autumn as in "music about autumn" or any music you associate with autumn? I've some that I always put on on dreary days in October and November, and have an autumn association (and that of a warm mug of chai and a good book to go with it0
Sweater Weather, Noah kahan, Hozier, Benson Boone, phoebe Bridgers, Cigarettes after Sex, ghost, joji, the Oh Hellos, Fleetwood Mac, Kate Bush, gilded lily by Cults, Kodaline, Kaleo, the twilight saga soundtracks for peak Hoa Hoa music, and Lana Del Rey.
Honorable mentions are OG Ed Sheeran songs, Moulin Rouge, Dolly Parton, Mumford and Sons, and Madison Beer
Iβm a mood listener so I always try to find playlists that match my mood when Iβm listening but these are my faves especially that give me autumn/orange and brown/Thursday/sunset vibes
Sweater Weather is an excellent choice. I couldn't get my brain to think past Wake Me Up When September Ends and I don't even like that song
omg i love Hozier ππ
π same
All of these are in my autumn music. More like my day autumn music. My weird, dark autumn music is more night time lol
Peep that playlist Iβm listening to right now. Itβs a spotify one and It think pulls from my liked songs? Itβs called pumpkin spice
I listen to dreary folklore music year-round tbh
WMUWSE makes me so sad. Learning what itβs about changed the whole meaning of listening to it and I no longer do. Also the fact that Billie Joe Armstrong hates when people joke about the song
May I also shout out Fleet Foxes, The Lumineers, Paris Paloma, Lizzy McAlpine, Searows, Haley Henderickxβall fantastic indie artists with a great autumn vibe
Sylvan Esso.

oh my god finally someone else who loves this song
Fleetwood Mac, The Cranberries, The Civil Wars, Coldplay, Florence + The Machine, Mipso
I don't think I generally listen to music by seasons, but when I was a teenager, there was a little band out of Chicago called Empires that I liked, and I always seem to come back to this song of theirs when the weather gets colder
Don't know who would even listen haha, but I always thought this was a nice duet from the Late Late Lienshow https://youtu.be/o9mvZXE-XpQ?si=2iMd5l0mjQqaGVpi
~* Jalan Kenangan *~
Sengaja aku datang ke kotamu
Lama nian tidak bertemu
Ingin diriku mengulang kembali
Berjalan jalan bagai tahun lalu
Sepanjang jalan kenangan
Kita slalu bergandeng tangan
Sepanjang jalan kenangan
Kau peluk diriku mesra
Hujan yang rintik rintik
Di awal bulan itu
Menambah nikmatnya malam syahdu
Walau diriku kini tla...

Those are both some interesting titles haha
This was the emo era, full of long, non-sensical titles. This was a pretty tame one in comparison to "The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and S||uicide|| is Press Coverage," "Being from Jersey Means Never Having to Say You're Sorry," or my personal favorite "Our Lawyer Made Us Change the Name of This Song So We Wouldn't Get Sued"
i'm going through such an early 2000s emo music phase and i love it π
Please share! What have you been listening to?
I've been listening to some music that has made me go "Am I turning emo...at 23 of all ages" haha
@sullen harbor sorry, I confused you for alex π But seriously, what are ya'll listening to?
