#x_finalize_helper.firm not launching with (X) + Power on 3DS

Hello,

I'm currently following the Finalizing Setup section of the 3ds.hacks.guide. I have placed the file x_finalize_helper.firm inside the /luma/payloads/ folder on my SD card.

However, when I hold (X) and power on my 3DS, it boots to the HOME Menu instead of launching the Finalizing Setup Helper. I’ve confirmed:

  • The file is named correctly: x_finalize_helper.firm
  • It's in the correct folder: /luma/payloads/

Could you please advise what might be causing this?

If you boot into the home menu, does the home menu give you a message about the sd card?

Also check your x button works

✅ I redownloaded the x_finalize_helper.firm file from the link you provided, and placed it correctly inside the luma/payloads folder.

📂 My SD card has the following:

finalize.romfs in the root of the SD card

x_finalize_helper.firm inside luma/payloads

✅ The SD card is recognized by the 3DS and shows no errors in the home menu.

✅ The X button is working perfectly (tested in-game).

However, when I hold X and power on the console, it just boots normally into the home menu.
Is there anything else I should check?

if you hold select while turning on the console with sd inserted, what does the yellow text on the bottom screen say (should be along the lines of "Booted from...")
