When this issue first happened I turned off my console and took the Sd card out and after about 10 mins it started working again. Now even after just using for a couple hours the issue has returned. In between the parts of it not turning on I would get an error message, but now the light just turns red.

a red light is generally not a thing you ever want to see. could you follow the instructions here : https://wiki.hacks.guide/wiki/3DS:Hardware_test

if it's a hardware issue (and it kind of sounds like one since the issue is intermittent with you not doing anything) then it was just bad luck pretty much

new 2ds xl is specifically known to be more likely to run into this specific hardware issue (failing ram)
