New Nintendo 3DS shows an error when launching apps (no CFW, no SD card)
Hi everyone,
I recently found a used New Nintendo 3DS (not XL) that seems to have a system-level issue. Here's a detailed breakdown of the situation:
⚠️ Symptoms
The console boots to the HOME Menu normally.
I can navigate the menus and open System Settings with no issues.
Any other application (like Mii Maker, Face Raiders, or any installed game) causes the system to crash with this message:
“An error has occurred and the system will now restart.
Unsaved data may be lost.
Press and hold the POWER Button to turn the system off.”
After the crash, the console restarts automatically.
The cartridge slot is recognized, but launching a game triggers the same error.
There is no SD card installed currently.
The system version is 11.7 and has no sign of custom firmware (CFW).
The battery looks healthy and the console doesn't overheat.
The console was used only briefly (about 15 minutes) by the previous owner.
🧠 My theory
The console may have corrupted NAND data or a partial/failed hack attempt in the past.
It might also be missing key files that are normally on the SD card (but I can’t confirm that).
The fact that System Settings works and some functions respond tells me it’s probably not a hardware failure.
Maybe it just needs a CTRTransfer or full reinstallation.
📌 What I want to know
-
Has anyone seen a similar issue with no CFW installed?
-
Could this be fixed by installing CFW and rebuilding system files?
-
Should I try Safe Mode update, FBI reinstalls, or GodMode9 CTRTransfer?
-
Is there any chance this is a hardware (NAND chip) failure?
Thanks in advance for any help or insight! 🙏
