I've been seeing conflicting information on Reddit. Some people seem to suggest that all clear cases are the same. Others say that you should get a tpu/rubber on instead or vice-versa. Others seem to forgo cases entirely. I've seen this case in particular mentioned by a couple people as well, however it costs $43 USD (for the non-xl nn3ds version). So what's the deal? Is there just no real consensus? Thanks

usually the consesus you see online is muddied by the very popular aftermarket clear cases that are in hard plastic, and those are the ones you see people talk bad about (even if hard plastic cases that have hinge support can help preserving atleast the hinges a little bit, even if its a bit hard to quantify precisely how much)
tpu/rubber is for sure the best option against scracthes, but the price tags are pretty hefty so its your call on that: if your n3ds will be thrown around, kept in a bag without a case, put in your pocket it could be a way to preserve it from scratches (i dont know if out there theres a tpu/rubber aftermarket option thats cheaper than what hori cases go for)
if your plan is only to keep it in your home/ only move it around with a carrying case then the investment on a rubber/tpu case at this price makes less sense IMO, just be careful
Thanks the reply! My main concern isn't really scratches moreso potential drops. Are tpu/rubber still my best option even then?
compared to hard plastic cases yeah, for sure
but to be sincere i dont know how hard these hori cases are, a case thats TPU/rubber but is very rigid is marginally better but still not a garauntee
you get the idea though
The tpu rubber would be your best bet for general protection, but there is no hinge protection so if you’re Uber unlucky with how it falls you could get your hinge to snap.
It’s really not possible to tell which case is going to be the best for drops because it’s kinda dependent on how the system impacts the surface.
yeah, generally rubber is better unless you are unlucky like shotty said
If you’re not worried about your system getting scratched by a hard case and just worried about the hinge breaking I’d probably look for a hinged hard case.
I do think that the soft cases tend to handle drops better in all other scenarios due to being a better shock absorber.
ok thanks
I know you’re not super worried about the case scratching your system, but if you have a special edition n3ds with hard to come by plates/shells, I would seriously consider paying the premium to find a tpu case.
Outside of the Black Friday Mario n3ds’s pretty much all special edition n3ds in good condition command a ton of value
Nah, I'm just getting one of the plain white ones from Japan, thanks tho!
You don't happen to know if it's true that o3ds cases fit the non-xl n3ds, do you?
Ah ok yeah do as you want for sure on that one
The o3ds cases do not fit reg n3ds’s
ah ok some people on reddit made it seem like they might
The reg n3ds is ever so slightly larger and has different placements of components such as stylus and cartridge slot
yeahhh I thought I might able to make new holes for the stylus/cartridge slot if it would at least fit, but I'll keep looking in the meanwhile
