so i've been playimg mh4u with my friend through local play but the connection has been iffy
the first day we played together it worked perfectly. no connection problems whatsoever
now everytime we play we have to do about an hour of troubleshooting until we get a stable connection
Last night we tried for 4 hours and can barely even get into a quest
feels like we've tried everying
we even tried in differnet rooms
idk what the problem is and why it isn't working like that first day
idk if anyone has had issues with local play and got it to work consistenly but any helped would be appreciated

i have a new 2ds xl and he has a 2ds if that changes anything
we were only able to complete 1 hunt last night and that was when we went outside lmao
Playing in same physical room?
Local is ad hoc wifi. If your wifi environment is crowded on 2.4 ghz, you're not going to have good latency or comms speed
Going outside would have brought you away from a cluster of noisy 2.4 ghz devices that you were time sharing the radio band with
Wifi is a pain to troubleshoot connectivity
yes
Then something is jamming your 2.4 ghz
Or one of the devices is having wifi card trouble
2.4 ghz is pretty crowded nowadays, especially if you.live in an apartment complex
How many networks can your 3ds see?
How many Bluetooth devices are around and turned on?
All of that reduces speed on 2.4 ghz wifi
i see
You can't exactly force your neighbors to turn all that off
it seems to work best at night usually after 9 pm so that's probably what it is
If you're within range, you share time on the same channel. Two devices talking at once jam each other and the data corrupts
More devices equals more chance of two choosing to talk at once
Wired networking doesn't have this problem
My old apartment had 70+ networks each on both bands in range of me, and I was on an outer corner
yeah whenever i connect any console to the internets a bunch of networks come up
Wifi was super slow but powerline didn't like the electrical wiring
Yeah, there's only like 3 actual channels that don't overlap on 2.4 ghz
Nothing you can do but move out of the crowded space
Radio is shared
Anyone in your space is sharing the channel with you
yeah last night when we tried it were just stepped right outside the back door of the house
3ds doesn't do ethernet
and it worked perfectly
dunno fi that was a fluke or not
when we came back in the house we disconnected
So you're stuck dealing with the radio and sharing the channel. Yeah, you got out of range of whatever was jamming you
Then went back into range
You're trying to have a conversation in a crowded room
Where everyone else is conversing
Lots of having to repeat yourself
i'm curious what that is cuz sometimes it works perfectly in the house after 8:30-9:00 pm
dunno if it's neightbors going to sleep or something in the house
Probably because your neighbors go to bed and stop using devices to send a lot of data
i see
last night we couldnt' get it to work at all so guess they all decided to stay up lmao
I told you, two devices can't talk at once and be able to communicate
They probably stop using devices then
Or, a bunch of their devices decided to pull updates last night...
Many things don't turn off now, just go into standby
Tuesday and Thursday nights are popular patch times
Yeah, wifi sucks to have to deal with
I wire in every device I can to not deal with this
wish this was like the gba where we could just link cable or something
Else you have to live in a house far enough from neighbors
Apartments suck for wifi
Nintendo got rid of physical link cable ports as of the ds
Wifi only, for various reasons
Yeah, wifi is better the fewer devices are in range
It's why cfw wifi video streaming sucks on 3ds
update: we're playing rn and it's working good so ar
it's morning time so most of the neighbors are probably at work
That's a sure sign the wifi channel is over crowded
Might be good to have a building talk and see what people can do to wire up things that are capable of such
If maintenance put ethernet jacks in the walls to run to a switch...
one question, are there also any materials that could interefere with a connection? like if metal or glass is near?
Only if between you like lead
Anything that blocks that radio frequency
Your issue is other signals on the same frequency drowning you out
Microwaves emit a spectrum of radio that can include 2.4 ghz
If any other 2.4 ghz device overlapping your channel talks, and another device talks at same time, the data from both is corrupted and needs to be resent
Which means all devices wait a random amount of time to try again
Happens too many times in a row and you disconnect
More devices in the mix increases odds of it happening, which slows down the networks for everyone on that channel
I could barely get 3 megabytes per second on the crowded 5 ghz at the old place
Should have been capable of over 120
That's what wifi congestion does to networks
And you can't do much about it in crowded living spaces
i see
Besides wire up every possible device you can to not crowd the wifi
But everyone has to do that
just wanted to know if that was something i should also be weary of
When wifi was new in the late 90s, we maybe had 1 or 2 devices each using it
Now we have tens in a household, maybe over 100
Weary is tired, wary is on guard
Aware
yup
i don't live in an apartment, but the neighbor's houses are fairly close by
my switch can connect to my internet from my neighbor's yard
Yeah, wifi covers a long range nowadays, so you're dealing with overlap
We have enough devices even close houses have the problem, apartments are just worse
Makes sense
I had a router that could cover an entire 24 unit condo building and the parking lot outside of it from one corner
gosh dang lmao
4 floors and a hill yard
