So ive been trying to see what’s wrong with this 2DS and everytime i power it on the light goes blue but nothing else happens, no sound or video. I got it to turn on ONCE and it worked for a few seconds but then lines suddenly appeared on both screens and it froze. I have no clue whats wrong with this thing 😭

could mean a lot of stuff. Just from what you told us, it could be:

  • poor connection (solder cracked, loose robbon cable, most likely cause)
  • corrupted firmware (most unlikely cause. Corrupted firmware most of the time results in the console behaving the same every time you power it on, which as you said isnt the case here)
  • some other issue. A small description and a photo of the dead ds from the outside isnt quite enough to get a clear image of what might be going on.
#

Have you used it before it died or did you buy it like this?

#

Oh and is it modded?

#

if it is it could also mean a faulty SD card/slot

#

since its a new 2ds xl this could be ram failure

#

ram failure is most common on the new 2ds xl and can cause extreme ghosting and in some cases a brick. Though there may be other symtoms as well, ram failure is not a well documented issue

I dont know about the 3ds but on the dsi cfw doesnt play well with faulty SD cards. Thats why i said that may be a possibility. ram failure would be a good call, but it could just as well be some loose connection, because that is exactly what happens when you try to turn on a 3ds (or 2ds, whatever) with the top screen disconnected.

loose ribbon cables turn off the 3ds immediately

I think it depends on the model. I saw someone attempting to turn an original 3ds into a gameboy macro diy thing and the console turned on without the top screen, showed the blue light and halted. Also even if on the n2dsxl the console shuts down the cable could be loose in such a way that some data line isnt connected and the console wouldnt know because (i dont know if i'm right here) the overcurrent protection doesnt get triggered.

he could still try to take out the sd card and power it on that way

hallow yoke
#

3ds.hacks.guide has troubleshooting for this exact issue

tardy trail
#

yeah first thing it tells you to do is to take out the sd card. I doubt it is a cfw issue because, as i said, firmware issues present with the same behaviour each time the console is powered on

#

i just saw he mentioned lines so ram failure is very likely as well (as you said)

heady canyon
#

Sorry for long response, apparently my notifications are muted

#

But the console isn’t modded, I don’t know too much about how it was before as its my friends

tardy trail
#

so you can try something. The console should power on if it's one of two things that could cause ram failure but it's not guaranteed it will work even if it is that

#

open up the console and push on the silver thing under the cartridge slot and while doing that power on the console

#

make sure to push on the leftmost part (hold the console with the cartridge slot upwards)

heady canyon
#

Alright, ill try right now

#

Yep, it powered on perfectly and when i moved my finger it froze

Ntrboot could boot the hardware diagnostic firm

#

But most likely is ram failure, n2dsxl suffers that more than any other model

heady canyon
#

What could i do to fix it?

bold shell
#

Only a hardware repair involving soldering

#

Ram chips are soldered to the motherboard via ball grid array

heady canyon
#

I have a soldering iron but its not mine and i don’t know too much 😓 is it an easy fix?

bold shell
#

An iron doesn't do bga

#

And if you have to ask, you don't have the skill

#

Soldering in general is not an easy task

#

Especially if you have to ask about it and don't understand what you are getting into

#

This is surgery with molten metal

heady canyon
#

Dang so im guessing my best shot would be taking it to a shop or something and have them reseat it?

bold shell
#

Or just replace the console

#

Labor for soldering might be more than the console

#

Shops I know charge 120 an hour

#

You'd have to see what they quote

#

And if it even is ram failure

heady canyon
#

Hm and i guess trying a fix like a piece of plastic to keep it in place would just be bad over time

bold shell
heady canyon
#

Yeah

#

Man this blows

bold shell
#

It's a metal crack

#

Welcome to the world of hardware failure

#

On systems not designed to be repaired or upgraded

#

Soldered on memory has been the console standard since the 80s

#

It isn't like a pc with modular chips

heady canyon
#

Yeah 😭 i already have alot on my plate as im also doing a 3ds xl hinge repair and for some reason the hinge i bought just doesn’t fit

hallow yoke
#

Julian, if you end up replacing the console, get any other model then the new 2ds xl.

#

the new 2ds xl is just not a good console for the price

heady canyon
#

Yeah i know its not my only console i have my main n3dsxl

#

I just like the pokeball one and want it to work 😭

bold shell
#

Case swap it then

tardy trail
#

perhaps someone you know who has a reflow station (maybe the person who owns that soldering iron?) and knows how to reflow could help. reflowing bga is not THAT hard... just saying

# heady canyon i got it on amazon

then buy from trusted sellers. Double-check everything. Ifixit is (overpriced, but) a trusted seller. I dont know if they sell hinges though

tardy trail
#

or just keep it for show 😉

heady canyon
#

I think ill probably just move any important data on it off and maybe sell it if i really can’t find someone to fix it for a reasonable price 😪 i could probably make a decent amount off it and get another one

tardy trail
#

new 2dses with that issue dont sell for much. Also if your console isnt modded, then besides pictures from the sd card i dont know what else you could get off it.

#

well i guess if it turns on then you can transfer stuff

heady canyon
#

True you did say it was a common issue, ill just unlink nnid and stuff

tardy trail
#

i had no idea it was a common issue until now

#

the more you know

heady canyon
#

Thanks nintendo for making their consoles die super fast 😪

tardy trail
#

the n2dsxl was a last ditch effort anyway

heady canyon
#

Yeah out of all the models it feels the most cheaply made

tardy trail
#

case easily breaks, ram issues (obviously), the worst 3ds in my opinion

heady canyon
#

Top screen replacement just seems like something you’d only do if you hate yourself

tardy trail
#

anything replacement seems like that

#

until someone invents a modular console, this will be the crap we have to deal with.
