I pulled my 3DS out of storage and found that the top screen was having strange glitching. It was kept in a drawer and shouldnt have been disturbed much if at all for years. I have been unable to find any similar problems online. All footage/images is with 3D turned off/minimum.

The camera app experiences little pixels flickering bright colors and you can see bright spots completely go dark like on the sheets in the video where im using the camera app and also in the moon in OoT3D.

Additionally, not shown, but when I booted a regular DS game the top screen went completely black.

Any idea whats wrong? I'm hoping its only a defective cable/screen but am worried it could be the hardware itself.

I’d guess maybe dusty screen, I really have no clue

I tried booting some other games and the top screen just goes black. In others it stays on with the black spots that kinda pop in and out like static on different textures and such

In the case when it goes black, hitting the home button does bring the screen back with a capture of the current screen

Just wanted to give an update for anyone who might find this with a similar issue.

  1. I tore down the 3DS and re-seated the cables to no success.
  2. I noticed if using Rosalina menu and I change the "screen filter" all the way down to 1200k, the glitching basically disappears.
  • Different temperatures above that, as well as changing gamma, contrast and brightness changes the glitching behaviour.
  1. Launching most games/apps results in a black top screen with a working bottom screen. In my testing the top screen is black for most homebrew apps such as FBI. Some extra details
  • Launching OoT 3D seems to work 100%, but I have not played past the deku tree.
  • Pokemon Omega Ruby will work up to the title screen, once i "press start" the top screen goes black.
  • All DS games seem to launch with a black top screen, this includes when launching by holding Select or Start for the "Original Size" mode.
  • Cold Booting into the Luma menu, the top screen is black (just like most games). Found this kinda odd since it should be a basic screen.
  1. If I use the Home button during gameplay, the top screen does turn on and shows a proper screenshot from the game for what should have been displayed.
  • If I resume the game, the screenshot is expanded to fit the screen, and then shortly fades to black, like the pixels are slowly turning off.

From everything I've read, it seems this is probably still a faulty top screen, but just a very odd failure behaviour. I was really curious why the top screen worked sometimes and other times not at all, but this probably requires someone with an intimate understanding of the 3DS system to determine.

you may get a better answer at Nintendo Homebrew, which has a hardware channel with several hardware helpers (i don't think there is a lot of people knowledgeable about the 3DS hardware here)

I have a theory as to why this may be happening
