My friend gave me a mysterious SD card he found and asked me to look at it. It has files dating back as far as 2012 with screenshots of his relatives and games. How can I view the contents of the SD card without screwing anything up? Do I need the original system? If so how do I find out if the one he still has is the 3DS it belongs to?

Iirc you check if it's the right system by just putting it in and seeing if it reads, but I don't remember if it'll overwrite the Nintendo 3DS folder if it doesn't match or not

I'm 99.9% sure I found who the system belongs to and specifically which one.

Then try it out in that system, see if anything comes up. Make a backup of the SD card beforehand just in case tho

Specifically just the Nintendo 3DS folder, I don't think other systems mess with the data in other folders in any detrimental kind of way
