Introduction
Despite its dissapointing introduction to the DL metagame, the recent buff to the Shaddoll Skill has revitalized the deck and improved on many of the areas where the deck fell short previously.

In this guide, I will go over the deck's best strategies and also go over on how the skill buff improved the deck.

Monster Card Ratios

ReeShaddoll Wendi x3

Wendi is one of the most important cards in the deck and serves as the primary extender and combo tool for the deck.

Shaddoll Dragon x2

Shaddoll Dragon serves as the decks anti-backrow tech as well as a great non-destruction removal option for the deck.

Shaddoll Squamata x1-2

Another extender for the deck as well as a great trap to destroy opponents monsters.

Shaddoll Hedgehog x2-3

This card primarily serves as an anti-brick tool as well as a combo extender depending on if you need another spell or monster card.

Shaddoll Beast x0-1

The first of the two selection exclusives. While I put this as 1x because having it is very much worth it, the deck functions fine without it as well.

Shaddoll Hollow x0-1
A big beater and a removal option for several attributes. Sending a Shaddoll Fusion also recurs a spell/trap from the graveyard.

Shaddoll Hound 1x

OTK facilitator and an anti-book tech for the deck. The card is surprisingly versatile in how it can affect the gamestate.

Rilliona, The Magistus of Verre x2-3

Serving as the best normal summon of the deck and the primary way to summon Shaddoll Construct, this is a mandatory 3x in any Shaddoll deck.

#

Spell/Trap Ratios

El Shaddoll Fusion x2-3

While at first glance just a worse version of Shaddoll fusion, the fact that it is a quickplay makes the card a potent otk and extending tool.

Resh Shaddoll Incarnation x2

With the skill changes this card is now unfortunately a mandatory 2 of if you would like to use modern shaddolls. No other card in the Shaddoll Archetype has the same impact sent to the graveyard.

Super Polymerization

The best 1-of staple for the deck. With Constellars, Live Twin, and other Dark/Light decks in the meta this card can disrupt the opponent and be used to either summon Winda or Construct.

Extra Deck Ratios

El Shaddoll Construct x3

Much of your plays will revolve around getting this card on the field. As the best OTK tool and out for non-targeting monsters, Construct can be used to extend your strategy and break boards.

Artemis, the Magistus Moon Maiden x1
One of the best anti-brick tech in the deck. If you do not draw Verre, being able to turn one of your level 4 spellcaster shaddolls into a light monster makes a huge difference.

El Shaddoll Wendigo x0-1

Only included in case of bricks with 2 Wendi's or the rare circumstance that you can super poly an opponents Wind monster.

Shaddoll Construct x0-1

A decent extender if you do not own 3 construct, but I would not recommend in this meta.

Gravity Controller x1

A critical part of Shaddolls best t1 strategy and an excellent tool to break boards.

Knightmare Phoenix x1

Being able to unlock yourself from Winda and recur fusion spells from the graveyard, with the added bonus of popping an opponents backrow is a great combo for Shaddolls.

Knightmare Unicorn x1

A great staple for many decks and that does not change for this deck.

El Shaddoll Grysta

An anti-fire tech while also being useful as a pseudo Roach option.

General Strategy and Set Up

The most critical period to get Shaddoll rolling is your turn 1 or 2. This is the weakest point you will be as a Shaddoll player so planning your turn is critical to winning.

Turn 1 Start

It may come as a surprise, but Shaddoll does not really care about going first or 2nd, but going first provides a few options that can potentially close out games instantly.

While it is fairly common to be able to just summon out Winda immediately and leaving it at that as a turn 1, there is a much better method to Winda lock opponents. If you have drawn Verre or any two spellcaster Shaddolls, you are able to set up the perfect turn 1 board.

After normal summoning Verre, or linking one shaddoll into Artemis, and adding Magistus Fusion, you are able to go into Shaddoll Construct. While you may be tempted to send a Shaddoll monster with Constructs effect, the best use is to send Shaddoll Schism, a trap added through the Shadow-Weaving Power Skill.

After sending the trap and activating whatever Shaddoll name you sent with Verre (preferably Wendi or Squamata), you can then Link away Construct into Gravity Controller to add back Shaddoll Schism that you just sent.

Set any traps or fusion spells you have in hand along with Schsim to try and protect against backrow removal, and next turn you can then either fuse another Construct or Winda to utilize the non-targeted send that Schism offers.

#

Turn 2 Start

Turn 2 is typically much more simple compared to turn 1, as you often will not want to spend your entire turn 2 just to acquire Shaddoll Schism. But one thing to note is that if your opponent summoned from the extra deck, Shaddoll Fusion is suddenly a 1 card combo to summon any fusion from your extra deck.

If, they much to my frustration, for some reason didnt summon from the extra deck, then your first prioritize is to make your field as defensive as possible. Summon Construct if you can and fill your field with disruption. This is where Sinister Shadow Games truly shines to help disrupt.

The Grind Game

Shaddoll plays differently than other decks currently in the meta. While it is not as much of a control deck or stall deck as Altergeist, it is not a fast deck to play. My average turn count playing Shaddolls is turn 5 to turn 7. If you dislike slow decks that do not have much OTK potential, then I would select a different deck.

That is not to say that Shaddoll cannot OTK, but your primary focus with the deck is to play defensively while disrupting your opponent, not to set up a clean kill.

I have included a few replays below where I demonstrate how to play past bricks or grind out a victory:

Tech Tools and Matchups

Effect Dodging

Shaddolls have numerous quickplay options to fuse there cards away using El Shaddoll Fusion and Shaddoll Schism, which can be used to dodge away from targeted effects.

Chain Blocking

Shaddoll is one of, if not the, best deck at chain blocking effects. Shaddolls in grave will always activate after effects on the field activate, meaning that you can chain block reaction negates and effects that activate in response to your cards activating.

Anti-Book of Moon

One of the biggest weaknesses of the ability to lock out the opponent with Winda is Book of Moon. But with Hound and Transmigration, you can negate the card entirely by either special summoning construct and sending hound, or banishing transmigration from the graveyard.

Meta Matchups

Shaddoll vs Zombies 80/20

Zombies have very few outs to Winda and as mostly dark monsters, you can get a free send when summoning. Not to mention, Shaddoll's grind game can far outlast Zombies.

Shaddoll vs T.G - 60/40

T.G on paper may seem like a solid counter to shaddoll through herald, but with the new skill you can pop either herald or the Link 3 through the use of dragon or squamata. Then it is easy to otk through herald since his negate does not work on fusioned monsters.

Shaddoll vs Sky Strikers - 50/50

Sky Strikers is an odd matchup for Shaddoll due to the fact that Sky strikers prefers to use your own monsters against you. However, Shaddoll has many different tools to avoid widow anchor and mind control to navigate to an OTK.

Shaddoll vs Blue Eyes - 80/20

Blue eyes is a Light Monster deck that focuses on big fusions or defensive synchros to help beat opponents. Naturally, Shaddoll is in a perfect position to counter both of these things. Winda is not very viable in this matchup, but clever positioning of Construct can close a game easily.

#

Worst Possible Matchups

In terms of the worst matchups for Shaddolls, there are three that I am tempted to surrender if I see them.

Toons - 90/10

Yes, this is not a joke, Toons are perhaps the worst possible matchups for Shaddolls for numerous reasons. Non-targetable monsters, no extra deck reliance, direct attacks, and a deck that puts your own on a timer, which is exactly what Shaddoll do not want to happen.

Ancient Warriors 70/30

Another deck with very little extra deck reliance. What makes this deck terrible to fight against is that they can easily negate your fusion spells through Zhuge Kong. And even one fusion negate can be sometimes enough to kill Shaddolls strategy, especially if you summoned Verre to search.

Magical Muskets 70/30

You may be recognizing a trend here, but Muskets bring out Shaddolls weaknesses through the ability to negate flip effect monsters through Cross-Domination and utilizing Desperado to stop any attempt at a play.

Shaddolls are very weak against decks that do not rely on the extra deck and have ways around Shaddolls grind game.

Alternate Tech Options

There are many ratio differences and stylistic choices you can make with Shaddolls. But there are also a lot of different tech options that you can choose to include as well:

Effect Veiler

Don't have Rilliona, Magistus of Verre? While I would recommend that you farm for a playset, there are alternative options that you can use. Effect Veiler is a solid staple that conveniently is also a light monster. This makes it a valid target to summon Construct via Shaddoll Fusion or Schism.

Aleister the Invoker and Invoked Engine

While I personally dislike this choice, it is undeniable that Aleister has good synergy with the Shaddoll Archetype. However, Aleister himself is a dark type so you would also have to include an ED slot for Magistus Artemis to make summoning Construct viable.

Spellbook of Prophecy and Allure of Darkness

Both limit 1, both serve the same purposes of allowing you to draw 2 cards. It is up to you whether you would want to give up your normal summon or banish a card to activate it. You would have to drop Super Polymerization, which I personally dislike.

D.D. Crow

Another well known staple that can singlehandedly defeat many decks. You would have to skew your ratios to add this card, but I have seen multiple decks run it and have success.

A/D Charger

A very nice F2P option that has added synergy with the shaddoll deck. As a light monster, it can be used to summon Construct and turn your set shaddolls into a quickplay effect on your turn. I would recommend this card if you do not have Resh Shaddoll Incarnation.

Magical Merchant
A new F2P option for Verre. While you give up the recur function of the skill, you do almost guarantee yourself a play by flipping up this monster.

January 2024 King of Games Deck List

This is the deck list that I used after the archetypes first release in the game to climb ranked. I highly recommend this ratio as I find it the most consistant in able to create a winning board turn 1 or 2.

One of the biggest downsides of Shaddoll is the cost to build the deck. The selection box cards of Beast and Incarnation are incredibly strong, but they also not only expensive, but unavailable at the moment. This is why I decided to create a cheaper alternative to building Shaddolls:

This build is not even necessarily worse than the selection box version, as using this build offers:

Pros
-Is more consistant than the selection version since you do not run traps
-The core gameplay loop offered in the more expensive version is still usable with little to no turn 1/2 effect on the deck.
-With the addition of Hollow, you can now use schism (or Hollow's flip effect) to effect Shiranui decks.

Cons
-A worse grind game as the construct > incarnation > construct loop is no longer possible.
-Less resource generation without beast's draw 2
-A lack of Super Polymerization (you can still run it, but I found monster reborn to be more useful for the long game)

Skill Updated Information and Strategies

With the current Skill Changes to Shadow Weaving Power, there are several things to know about how this change affects the deck.

What are the Changes?
The new skill now sends 2 "random" Shaddoll traps from your deck at the start of the duel, activating before Shaddoll Schism is added to the deck. This means that if optimized, the Shaddoll Player gets 2 free Resh Shaddoll Incarnations.

The other change is that Shaddoll is no longer barred from adding or summoning monsters aside from Shaddoll and Spellcasters. However, this freedom does restrict the user from using the Shaddoll card recursion part of the skill.

What are the benefits?
What this change does is slim the Shaddoll deck from a Mandatory 24 card deck to a 22 card deck, which greatly improves consistency. But also having 2 Incarnations in graveyard also allows Shaddoll flip effects to be activated turn 1/2. This tech makes Shaddoll Hedgehog a 2 card combo into a full Shaddoll turn 1.

As a note, having Incarns in the graveyard at turn 0 also allows you to detect potential D.D crows, which will affect how you play throughout your turn. (As a note, Hedgehog can search Shaddoll Schism from deck.)

Here is an example of a tournament topping Shaddoll Deck with the new changes:

What are the downsides?
The skill is not only upsides, there are several things to consider if you are planning on picking up Shaddoll.

The skill changes have made 2x of Resh Shaddoll Incarnation mandatory, I cannot recommend using the deck if you are not willing to dig into a Selection Box for the trap. With Verre still being the decks best normal summon, Shaddoll is now even more expensive.

Also, if you want to mix Shaddoll with a different deck such as Orcust or Mekk-Knights, you have to give up the free recursion the skill offers, but you still get the two free Incarnations.

Nehshaddoll Genius and El Shadoll Shekinaga

Both shaddoll cards revolve around interacting with the opponent in terms of negating monsters, whcih goes a long way to give Shaddoll tools to interact with the opponent beyond Flip effects.

Turn 1 Changes
The turn 1 for Shaddoll has not been overly affected by these two cards, as both lend themselves better to a turn 2 start. However, there are still things to keep in mind going first with the new cards.

It is almost never optimal to try and end on Shekinaga going first. I have explored numerous paths and while ending on Shekinaga and schism is possible, you give up the chance to end on both schism and incarnation or el shaddoll fusion. I have found it is better to do the standard Shaddoll turn 1 and end on Gravity Controller, a facedown, and your two traps.

The way your turn 1 is changed from these cards being added is felt on your opponent's first turn, as Genius and Shekinaga give you several new options on how to respond to their actions. With Neshaddoll Genius, you now have a quickplay negate by sending it to the graveyard, which is best accomplished by summoning El Shaddoll Construct from the Graveyard with ReShaddoll Incarnation.

Also, summoning Shekinaga off of Schism also has the benefit of being able to send an Earth monster while still putting a negate on the board that can also activate a Shaddoll Monster from your hand.

Turn 2 Changes
The effect of these two cards is mostly felt in the turn two, as Genius and Shekinaga alone give Shaddoll one of the best turn 2s in the game. While before where Shaddoll struggled to play through interaction, sending genius and winda with Shaddoll fusion to summon Shekinaga results in two monster negates from a one card cost and without a normal summon. This allows Shaddoll to play past nearly all non-floodgate interaction.
