It's pretty strange that a good job candidate wouldn't have thought of googling what IBM stands for, first thing I would have done. A good research is always one that gets its information from multiple reliable sources and not just from one. If you go to any other website detailing IBM's history you'll find what it stands for. I just google "IBM history" and the fourth link redirects me to the IBM archives and at the end of the introductory page you can find what IBM stands for. It wasn't that hard, wasn't it? But as I said, I find it strange that they ended the interview at that because it could happen that you didn't research what their name stands for or just forgot it. I'm not excusing the interviewers behavior of just literally nuking the guy for not knowing one thing; all I'm saying that I such questions don't seem unusual to me and I don't see a problem with them asking them. The interviewer might have just had a bad day and vented on the interviewee. I'm sure it's not a frequent occurence for an interview to end like that the interviwer is to blame, not the company that gave such question guidelines.

IBM is one of the biggest and most ancient computer technology companies in the world with 100+ years of history. I'm sure they are proud of their achievements and it's their right to demand their employees to at least know a bit of its history; you don't have memorize a 37 page essay. I'm sure they want they employees have a passion for IBM and not just the work their gonna do. They have tons of potential candidates that want to get a job there so it's natural that they are going to select the best ones. This is just a part of the whole interview. I'm sure they also assess candidates based on their adaptability, communication and problem solving skills, etc.
