When you do a search in the chat for something, and sometimes there are people's usernames that are white instead of a colour like blue or orange, does that mean they've been muted temporarily or something else?

For example:

#

As sometimes I can click on their profile, and see that they still have a valid Discord account, and that they are still part of this server (via mutual servers tab)

alpine cradle
#

I think it's just that discord didn't load their color

it sometimes happens to me when I flick the channels, some people have no color

fossil cipher
#

@marsh linden, when you speak with spanish natives, do they think you speak like a native? Was 6 months in Spain enough to learn spanish? How hard were the beginnings for you? Thanks.

marsh linden
#

No. truth is in any language there's a million and one things that make a native stand out as a native that are hard to put your finger on. Intonation, structure, language usage, cultural references etc. etc. Through text it's definitely possible but to actually pass as a native through voice is very hard. That's not to say that it's impossible or necessarily desirable (you can be excellent at a language without sounding like a native).

6 months are maybe enough but I didn't go there to study the language, if I had let's say gone to a language school instead of uni when I was there and went out, really put myself out there and tried to speak as much as possible, I think you could definitely get to a reasonably high level, for sure.

I assume you mean the beginning of Spanish? It was hard but I think Spanish is good in that it starts you off relatively easy, with the more difficult concepts generally lying further down the road. That's not to say that it's super easy and you don't have to work at it, but in general you can get your meaning across pretty well even if your grammar isn't 100% @fossil cipher

#

Also the fact that there are just an endless amount of incredible free, online resources means that if you put the effort in you can really make huge progress from the comfort of your own home without spending money. I haven't spent anything on my Spanish learning for example

fossil cipher
#

Thanks for the answer, interesting, so you already knew spanish before you went there? And sure, I'm aware there is a lot of resources, but I still think It would be much faster to learn spanish in Spain.

marsh linden
#

I didn't, no

#

I started learning a few months before I left but I didn't have the knowledge I do now about how to learn efficiently so it wasnt terribly useful

Does anyone on here know exactly how an acoustic guitar preamp works and the components and all?

#

I took my guitar apart to try and diagnose why the preamp doesn’t work and I’ve settled on a lack of connection with the amplifier when I connect it to one.

#

And if you’ll notice... one of the wires there just isn’t connected to the port.

#

That is a guitar input jack.

The priest arrived in the village and went to the church to hear confessions. After a little while a young man came in to confess his sins.

"Father, forgive me, I have stolen a watch."

"Well, young man," said the priest, "don't just say you are sorry, but give the watch back to the owner."

"Let me give you the watch, Father."

"No, said the priest. Don't give it to me. Give it to the owner."

"But, Father, I've offered it to the owner and he doesn't want to take it back, said the young man."

"Well, in that case, I've given you absolution for the stealing, but you can keep the watch."

#

The priest gave the young man forgiveness. Later, however, when the priest left the church he discovered that his watch had been stolen.

keen sundial
#

You probably have a short or a bad potentiometer

main hatch
#

What I mean is that it’s been on/off and one of the times it worked, I tried it later, and it didn’t, and I haven’t really tried it since then.

#

I would take it into a guitar shop but 1. I don’t exactly have the money to spare and 2. Well...
I come from a family where we don’t exactly like to hire professionals to do stuff, we just do it ourselves. For example, recently my dad built an outdoor screened-in lounge type of thing. He did the carpentry, roofing, plumbing, electrical work, flooring, etc. etc. all himself

#

So anyway, I soldered that third wire to that third connector. The preamp works perfectly now đŸ€·â€â™‚ïž

#

I'm trying to read a file using python

#

and I'm using this

#
with open("C:\\Users\\test\\Documents\\testFoler\\shorttest.txt", newline="\r\n") as csv:
          print(csv.read())
#

but it says that the file doesnt exists

#

and that doesnt make any sense because that's its path

fallow dock
#

is this for college?

median trail
#

no

fallow dock
#

you would usually want to avoid writing the paths like that, pathlib is a good library for that. It also makes your code portable so it would work on UNIX systems

#

I know your question isn't about that, but still

#

lemme see a thing

median trail
#

hm

fallow dock
#

I am confused because I dunno how to handle Windows paths, and it's more confusing without abstractions

#

do you need the full path?

median trail
#

not really

#

the file is in the same folder as my code

#

but it doesn't work either

fallow dock
#

ah, well, that makes testing a bit easier for me

#

try this, hold on

#
# I was not drunk, now I remember why it's better to do it this way.
from pathlib import Path

path = Path(__file__).parent.absolute()

print(*path.iterdir(), sep='\n')
print(f"We're at: {path}")```

median trail
#

yeah the file was actually

#

for some reason

fallow dock
#

ah, I see, freaking Windows

#

you can disable that, the Windows explorer hides the extensions by default

#

there are 10k tutorials about it on the internet because nobody likes that

median trail
#

yeah it's annoying

fallow dock
#

btw if you don't want to use pathlib and need to paste a Windows path, you should be able to do so with a raw string

#

instead of escaping all the \

#

sopython r"C:\Users\test\Documents\testFoler\shorttest.txt"

it should make things much faster to test out. I also edited that snippet I showed you cuz it was really crappy and not the proper way of doing it

past harbor
#

jamĂĄs lo he usado desde la pĂĄgina

#

me parece hiper dificil, prefiero comandos lol

fallow dock
#

no, no, al sitio no lo usas

#

past harbor
#

ah, bien acabo de encontrar los comandos

fallow dock
#

so, GitHub:

past harbor
#

past harbor
#

fallow dock
#

ah, no

#

no realmente

#

#

File globbing matches across directory boundaries. Thus, given two directories d and d2, there is a difference between using git rm 'd*' and git rm 'd/*', as the former will also remove all of directory d2.

#

#

One specific example that comes to mind for people who cba to read through all of that is a review on the company I saw a while ago. It was apparently from a man in his 70’s that decided to cancel his contract with the country. Well, early cancellation brings on a fee of $15 per month left on the contract (the contract is 2 years total). So the dude paid that, and then the company contacted him telling him that he had to return their equipment that was on his roof. The equipment that he paid for (either $9.99/month or a one-time fee of $300) and that was installed by a third-party contractor hired by the company (after they made him pay them an additional $100 installation fee, to install their own equipment.) And if he wanted to return it, he would’ve had to climb up on the roof and take it down himself or hire somebody to do it. A dude in his 70’s. And if he couldn’t do that and return it? He would have to pay another $300.

@abstract scaffold should I cover vector functions before covering multivariable functions?

Has anyone has issues with node-gyp and npm? I'm trying to run npm install but it keeps having errors about node-gyp and this msbuild.exe

abstract scaffold
#

I feel they kinda just go hand in hand.

#

casi nunca estudié las funciones vectoriales

#

median trail
#

but did you use multivariable functions a lot

abstract scaffold
#

@median trail do lagrange multipliers count. I remember taking partial derivatives of some 3D function.

oh.... i also did some in advanced calc complex analysis. f(x,y) = u(x,y) + v(x,y)i
find if it is differentiable in the complex plane.

#

pero, no dirĂa que las usaba mucho.

#

median trail
#

what's flagship

glass dragon
#

#

a flagship phone is a brand's best and newest phone

median trail
#

ahhh

glass dragon
#

like samsung's flagship is the note 20 that will release soon

#

but iphone only releases flagships

#

they don't have cheaper versions of their phones

#

you simply have to buy a slightly older model

okay thank u :)

i mean i have iphone now but i'd like to buy better model

glass dragon
#

the motorola flagship is the edge, which is just as expensive as an iphone

#

but with motorola, you could also buy a G7 for much much cheaper than an iphone

#

which one do you have Okta?

void parrot
#

um i have iphone se

#

and i want to buy iphone se 2020

@glass dragon

glass dragon

Love the fingerprint reader
@shrewd pendant why? Does it do something special? Or is it just the first time an iphone fingerprint reader has worked

terse timber
#

Does the iPhone's fingerprint doesn't work correctly??

shrewd pendant
#

well as far as I know there are three options for unlocking your phone

  1. password
  2. face ID
  3. fingerprint
of those three, fingerprint seems the superior choice to me
#

I haven't used face ID but especially with masks I'd imagine it might be a nuisance

#

what do android phones usually use to unlock?

glass dragon
#

Is this the first iPhone that has had a fingerprint reader?

vestal pine
#

can’t have a fingerprint if the screen takes up the entire phoneWeSmart

shrewd pendant
#

no iphones 4-8 or so had it

#

then they got rid of it for the iphone X

vestal pine
#

it was from iPhone 6 to iPhone 8 im pretty sure

#

iPhone 5 might have had it but def not 4

glass dragon
#

Androids have password, face id, and fingerprint, too

shrewd pendant
#

which does yours have?

glass dragon
#

I've just never heard anybody rave about a fingerprint reader before lol

#

Mine has all three, plus pattern unlock or like gps or Bluetooth unlock (eg it will unlock your phone at home automatically)

shrewd pendant
#

which phone?

glass dragon
#

Pixel 3a is what I currently have

terse timber
#

Oooh interesting the GPS stuff

#

I've never heard about that

glass dragon
#

Oh actually mine doesn't have face unlock

shrewd pendant
#

is the reader at the bottom of the front or something else

glass dragon
#

On the back

shrewd pendant
#

yeah the face ID actually requires different hardware

#

it's like lazers or something

glass dragon
#

My Moto's was on the front

vestal pine
#

mine just has face id

shrewd pendant
#

otherwise you could just use a picture of someones face

vestal pine
#

and my iPhone 8 just has fingerprint laff

terse timber
#

I have an "old" Xiaomi :"v

vestal pine
#

that doesn’t work Berban we’ve tried that

glass dragon
#

Yeah that's his point exactly

vestal pine
#

Oh

shrewd pendant
#

funny you tried though xD

glass dragon
#

I guess face unlock is only an iPhone thing and I was mistaken

gusty ermine
#

@narrow phoenix it's antiquanted I found something refering to stuff like this a while back in books like Elements of Style and referenced works *
