Our highway system is always beaten up
where's yours?
Where's what? The highway system?
the one you're talking about
In Los Angeles
ahh but you don't have snow, how are yours that bad
Surprisingly we dont need snow for everything to go bad, just a simple car accident or an idiot sleeping mid lane and boom, you have a traffic jam 😂
oh I thought you meant the pavement

I meant beaten up as in

@silver crypt I don't have much time to talk. I try to keep what I know by reading
I see
Do you think you have a good knowledge of English?
I know you like to study grammar, but are there anythings you find necessarily difficult about it?
So for School I need to do a ‘presentation’ NOT a presentation but like an instruction guide. Does anybody have any idea what I should do I’m clueless.
Examples:
If you want to apply a face mask.
Step 1: Clean your face with water
Step 2: take the peel off the paper
Step 3: apply firm pressure to the mask on your face. Etc. But i don’t need to type this on paper or something I need to do it in real life and show the people.
You can also do how to make a swan with origami paper
You can literally do everything that has instructions with a length of 4-6 minutes
If someone could help me I would be so happy 🥺
Just like give me something to instruct about
I understand a lot when I read, but that's not reflected when I try to write. I have a hard time following the structure; it's not so flexible and many times I don't know where to put one thing or another when it comes to very long sentences @silver crypt
I totally understand that
I'm the same way in Spanish
I can understand, I can read, but I have issues writing and speaking
But it's a matter of practice, with repetition things will flow. You'll get there 🐺
I can say the same to you, bean. Someday I bet you will talk well, you just don't have the time rn

Does anyone have tips for expanding your vocabulary? I know alot of basic words but not enough to actually have a conversation.

And listen to music
And read
Preferably something you can use context clues on
And YouTube
And movies you've seen

It's good because it focuses on essential words youre missing
And also gives you an opportunity to use them in practice right after learning them

Besides Photoshop, are there any good softwares for editing photos?
ooh
I use gimp
i've been using it for years
everyone laughs at parties when I say GNU image manipulation program
id like to interject for a moment..
what is it
how dafaq do i even use this
wait hang on, I'm still waiting for wrzd to say something
i think it's just a meme lol
ohhhhh
from the lin- sorry gnu cult
Yeah I hate gimp too, but I learned to use it out of necessity
why hate it lol
photoshop interface is not that different
and it gives you a lot of power
It's visually similar, but the shortcuts where different
That's exactly why you shouldn't get an iphone
oxi no
that conclusion doesnt make sense
That's cause you are a tech nooby person, you need to open your third eye and get on the level
but the thing is im not such a tech nooby person
don't get too intimidated by it, you can get used to it in a few days
I used to just play around and mess with stuff at the start
its just i have never ever used editing softwares like those
and you also have youtube
That's good, you can learn gimp and become a master
youtube is for vids n stuff
Youtube is for learning
there are hundreds of thousands of tutorials and even short tips
use the select tool
hm ok
you have multiple ways of selecting things
you can use the resize one
to move things around too
if you click in the middle
not like in other programs where you can resize and move with knobs when you select something
yeah because
these programs work with layers
at the start you only have one layer
which is the whole image
you end up selecting things and moving them to different layers, or adding images to other layers
and then you move those layers around, edit them
I mean simple stuff you can do on one layer
i see
ok that's simple enough, you'll end up using two layers, you can just drag the images into the program. You should look up how to resize the canvas (your whole working space, the space that will be the output, the final image), how to adjust it to your images
you will probably end up shrinking the bigger image of the two, so you don't stretch the other one and it doesn't look ugly
Export as
wait nvm i fixed it
Were you trying to remove the background before? It looks solid enough that you might get away with using the Fuzzy Select
Maybe
Right-click the layer => Add Alpha Channel
Select the background
Hit Del
Then import the second image to a layer below this one
i wasnt trying to get rid of the background i think
Oh OK, nvm
gimp is hard to use
when i press scale i cant go to a new layer
and when i achor it it disappears
Is it something copy & pasted?
yes
It will say "Floating Selection" in the layers list
Right click it => To New Layer
Then resize that new layer
what can i do to get rid of this blank space without cropping the pictures
the checkerboard pattern thing
Can't you just drag the top one down?
Or resize it, because it looks a little squashed
oh right
Yeah it would do no hard to vertically stretch the top one
better?
good job, you only have a tiny ~2 pixel gap between the two lower images
and another to the right of the top image
once you fix them you can go to image-> fit canvas to layers, and export it
ikr its annoying me
you can use the arrow keys if you want pixel accuracy
hmm
i cant move pixel by pixel horizontally
you could just cut the excess bits once all images are touching each other
select the thing you want to export and using image-> fit canvas to selection
1 press 1 pixel
if you do that, it doesn't matter if there's a tiny bit of an image going outside, it's like you are only taking a picture, the parts outside the canvas won't show up, and you don't have to stretch anything around, distorting it
the option is grayed out for me
there has to be a selection first, you can use box select
if you are done and happy with how it looks? you can go to file -> export as... and export the final result as a single image
(I recommend using png, since it's lossless, that is, things like jpeg compress the image a lot and it looks blurry and ugly, unless it's a picture of trees or something)
uhhhh
no need to touch anything lol
oh so just export
ye
if you use save/save as instead of export, what you are saving is the gimp project, so you can open it later and keep working on it if you want or it's something that will take long
no need, png is still lossless, the image will have every exact pixel.
what that does is just make the file larger or smaller, 0 means no compression, 9 means full compression. I think it's only useful if you are in a rush for some reason and want a big exported image right now
I'd always just leave it at 9, I prefer smaller files lel
if you don't want to keep working on that, yeah
especially the right one, look how it completely ignores the lighting/shadows

I'm sure once you get the hang of it you can do a lot better

Yeah don't worry, my sis chose her major weeks before starting uni
I mean if you have an idea of what you want to do
start doing stuff related to it
but don't worry super hard about locking it down
You don't figure out what you want to do by thinking super hard about it you learn by doing things
Yeah so far my choices are urbanism, psychology, or political science
Not gonna lie it's hella wack
We know
At least those of us who subscribe to the gospel of urbanism
So many boomers seem perfectly content with living in a boring suburban hellhole
as my rent goes up
I sometimes don't know how can people enjoy living in those hella desolate highway suburbs with nothing but detached houses with lot's of space of nothingness
I know right?
Even the ultra rich suburbs here are rowhouses with a few informal businesses here and there
Yeah I love that
why not have a kiosco or two within a residential area WHY CAN'T WE EVEN HAVE THAT IN THIS DARN COUNTRY
Though we could also do with more public transport that isn't just decent in 2 or 3 cities in the whole nation, and 6 lane avenues in residential zones
I mean if it's dense enough you barely even need public transit
I absolutely love how Córdoba is built
I haven't even had to take the bus
everything is so close
The suburbs have decent density when it comes to grocery stores yeah, but when it comes to education, work, and recreational it's bus or car
Well you want the jobs to be concentrated in the city center
Not to mention that the buses are always packed full with shitty schedules and tiny coverage areas
Well the thing there's 6 city centres here Xd
At least in the whole metropolis
But the city centres aren't that much more dense than the suburbs, so you are as likely to have a job in another nearby municipality as in the local centre
Pretty much xd, at least there's walkable cafes, grocery shops, parks, and a few restaurants here and there
but my school decided it'd be amazing to just cover 3 neighbors with buses, and the ones I could use that are not from school, take over half an hour to do a one way trip, that is if there's no delays or much traffic
Yeezus
They could fund more lanes and coverage but all my classmates are rich snobby gated community teens so
Don't get me started on the uni students
but cars exist
Yeah, and they are one of the most polluting, inefficient, and costly methods of transport
cars are expensive and need space
if every single person in a metropolitan area had to use a car you would be stuck in traffic forever
To an urbanist, cars are the representation of all that is unholy in good urban design
While buses can hold 50 people at a time, and only take the space of 2-3 people, imagine how much space would be needed for 50 cars
Even diesel buses are more eco friendly per person than hybrids
hahaha imagine that pupper, it would be a movie: The Day Everyone DROVE
lmao
that's the entire west coast pupper
well but I'm taking reality to an extreme
That's the reality for most of the US
L.A. irl
again, that's just all of the us besides the northeast
and a good bit bit of them too
Everyone at once, it just sounds apocalyptic to me
That's all of the US except bits of the East Coast and a bit of San Fran and Portland
Imagine VTA
trAmS
wtf
except for a few places
oh well
do they hand out cars for everyone
Yeah LA only has metros and buses, but only for the city centre xdd
what do i know
No everyone buys one
traffic is a problem
no that's why people have no money
but people just build wider highways
lmao
Wasn't there like almost double the amount of cars per people in L.a.
am cri
@rain ermine Allow me to introduce you to Induced Demand
No wider highways cause more congestion and displace thousands of people
widening highways doesn't work that's why cities don't really do it anymore
Unless it's Texas
people have multiple cars, cause if 2 people work at 2 different places they need 2 cars
the only solution is getting cars off the road
motherfucking katy freeway
and cars don't just use highways, unless you are planning on demolishing everything and turning everything into a highway
which is almost impossible because we've committed to car centric urban design
say wut
that's what they did pupper. car companies worked to get cities to get rid of trolleys etc back in the day
just demolish every skyscraper, university and hospital
they ripped the tracks out of the ground
wtf
Yeah
Yeah car and oil companies bought the tram networks in L.A. and made them buses
ok that country is scary
we've known that car centric design is a bad idea long term
just there was lobbying
it didn't happen in san francisco or the northeast or chicago though
Oh boy wait till you hear about oil companies advertising as being eco friendly
so wider highways just work for texas
so we still have subways and things
No wider highways never work
but we're the weirdos in the US
The 23 lane katy freeway is a horrible monstrosity
abi stop being a weirdo smh

I like my weird public transport
idk if katy is near houston
I think it was, I think it was Dallas
Houston is an interesting case because it has no zoning laws
Either way it ended up causing even more congestion
but that just means induced demand can take effect faster
ahh I foound it
Learn for free for two months over at http://Skl.sh/wendover The Wendover Productions behind-the-scenes Skillshare course: http://skl.sh/wendover-class Subsc...
here you go
it explains
It only works for the first few months and engineers like reporting it as working
widening highways encourages more development around them and encourages people to stop using public transit and take those highways instead
also people taking congested routes will start using that highway instead
what reds wat
But the months afterwards show worse traddic
the redcoats
so eventually the highway becomes just as bad or worse than it used to be
i'm being a mcarthyist
Also increased maintance on roads
ohhh
from what i see
nah not the lobsters
traffic is a 50/50 thing
So basically more highways equals more maintenance costs, more pollution, more congestion, and displacement of people
i knew it was something with lobster lol, thanks I forgot
yes
do you have trolleys or trolleybuses
NAH
I am sure none do
like busses that run on wires
SF has the cable cars
wtf no
Oddly enough in our center we do!
but that's it
no
depends
a tube
light rail?
naw the only city with an underground is new york
um
like this
I fucking went into an illusion in boston then cause that shit is underground here
theyre everywhere in downtown houston
Boston isn't a city
Anyway
also hot fucking take from a dude in cali
if you want a taste of near perfect city design look at Córdoba on google maps
zero public transit ass cali
there's one highway
in texas there are busses
it's a start
it's a ring road so it literally just exists to direct traffic that is bypassing the city around the center rather than through it
but only homeless people ride it
why?
its all i see at the stops
there's a dense center where a huge percentage of the residents live
you can walk across it in around 30 minutes
all the jobs are concentrated there so there's a consistent flow of cars in and out each day
this allows you to design the surrounding suburbs better
Also take a look at Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Oslo, Tokyo, and Singapore
I don't get the stigma against public transit in the us
muh car
Probably oil and car lobbyists propaganda
muh debt
people don't ride the bus cause ew that's what people without cars go on?
Naw it's literally the residents
but abi
you throw your headphones on and go
"Oh it's a waste of money this neighborhood isn't dense enough"
Ironic that pre ww2 the reason to dismantle trams was "maintanance"
transit isnt statewide
oh
And nowadays road maintenance, parking spots, and pollution causes many more costs
So it always goes "We can't build transit because it's a waste of money. The neighborhood isn't dense enough" -> "We can't densify the neighborhood because there's no transit. Traffic will get really bad"
rinse and repeat
You need to do both
at the same time
but since it's so hard to actually develop anything, especially in california
but that state is the richest
and since transit is managed inefficiently by a mishmash of agencies run by non-experts that have no teeth
it doesn't happen
rich just means that there's a lot of rich people it doesn't mean that we properly fund or manage our transit systems
^
which state, if any, has at least somewhat decent public transport in the USA?
Massachusetts I'd guess
||what about ubers||
also the infrastructure is expensive to build and hard to implement because our metros are already built up in a car centric manner
Ubers most of the time are equally bad
And most drivers don't even get paid a liveable wage
it actually makes traffic worse than it should
NYC (not new york state though)
ubers tend to take risky moves that impede traffic
like illegally going to the side of the street to pick up riders
they also spend a lot of idle time just driving around
it's not really a state thing
thus making congestion worse
so the more developed states
and they often aren't familiar with the area
where urban dominates
Yeah
the older states had time to get them in before cars is my guess. and being dense helped too
I mean even northeast cities are baby cities for babies
Then there's Georgia and Alabama banning spending on public transport
WTF
nyc's a baby city huh?
new york is one of the biggest cities in the us wtf
have you been there at all?
I guess Tokyo is a baby city too
in a country of 300 million people, how big do you expect the biggest city to be?
are you guys crazy
Tokyo is huge
I'm contractually obligated to shit on nyc as I'm from boston but I'm about to leap thru the screen to defend them for this
don't get me wrong
Houston in comparison is a baby city lol
Oh you mean compared to total population

keep in mind tokyo's metro has tens of millions
wow that is small
greater boston is across 4 states
might wanna look at density homie
8.6 million
Yeah Mexico City is like 24 million and we have a third of the population of the US
Also depends what you classify as the boundaries of NYC
NY is the only city in the US that actually represents an ideal level of density
if we strictly speak of the 5 boroughs it is 8 million or so
the rest of our major metros should be that dense
if you wanna live in suburbia you can
But the metropolis extends far bigger than that and has a pop of 18-20 million
"Boston has a density of 13,841 people per square mile (5,344/square kilometer), and Greater Boston is the 4th most densely populated region in the United States, after New York Metro Area, Greater Los Angeles, and South Florida Metro Area. Somerville, a city just north of Boston and included in its metropolitan area, has the highest population density of 18,431.6 people per square mile."
:ada:
Yeah and so is Greater London xd, which ahouldn't be tbh
I mean we're not number 1 but
Could you see that abigail ?
Those densities are kinda misleading
look
yeah
:ada:
they're really not
if you go by city proper it's NY then SF
still no pepe
then no other city comes even close
didn't you see the emoji T_T
I'll show you a different density used by the OECD and show you how dense those cities really are
yeah and by my standards it's not insanely dense
wtf is dense to you
Cincinnati lol
Tokyo, Paris, London, Athens
london is eh
I guess inner london
Mumbai is a bit much
No it isn't, look in the chart
parts of it
buenos aires and boston are 13k/mile you buffoon
Cities aren't just historical centres anymore
It's like saying that Los Angeles is just the city centre, while excluding Long Beach and etc
whatever their census used
Or London is just the City of London
and the same source as the quote from above
Abi, Boston isn't a dense area, it's more of a sparsely spread city
um
Los Angeles is more dense
no
I'm just saying if you visit CABA and then visit boston you can't say they're the same density
there's almost no suburbs in CABA
la is more dense than us I said
What's caba
The buenos aires metro consists of CABA, which is dense as fuck, and the surrounding suburbs in buenos aires province
how
Boston has a density of 13,841 people per square mile (5,344/square kilometer), and Greater Boston is the 4th most densely populated region in the United States, after New York Metro Area, Greater Los Angeles, and South Florida Metro Area
And pretty sparse
What boundaries are we saying is "Houston"?
Because we can just take the historic dense centre and say that's all of Houston and discard the metropolis
just read that
Anyway it's not even about how dense a city in its entirety is
That's why it is important to note what are the boundaries of your definition of x place
I FUCKING SADI
i'm in pain
it's about where the density is and whether density exists to an appreciable degree
Ah don't you just love enclaved cities within bigger ones?
yes
The question was sarcastic
btw does will smith live at bellaire
LA area is pretty enourmous if you count the other cities and counties neighboring it
It is
boston didn't annex other cities
it's not dense tho
Which makes it the greater LA area
so boston proper is little
and the thing is having a ton of small municipalities around a bigger one is bad design anyway
Wiki includes the small town of maywood, in the list
It's a small City in the LA area, pretty shitty area haha
those municipalities have residents who use the bigger city's services but don't contribute to its tax base
Very dense I say
Like Las Vegas
and a lot of the time those municipalities are very obstructionary
Except Las Vegas is the bigger one but still
Vegas isn't a good city for living in, apparently the only good jobs are working at a casino
Paradise is a tax dodge lmao
wait hold up, your services aren't state level?
Oh yeah Paradise that
what the fuck
Whaddya mean
they don't get state funding?
I think the interstates are government level
I mean I'll tell you how it works in the bay
The state highways are by the state
anyway I guess the main point is they are economically intertwined with the bigger city but not politically intertwined
you don't fund normal roads via the state at all?
that means that they often have conflicting interests
wat
Oof I think people from LA and SF can relate to is the damn 101 freeway 😂
Are you serious
is that a different freeway or something?
Where are u from
also the way things work here is by town. towns have their own government systems, their own police forces, fire depts, schools, etc.
no idea what you mean by "the 101"
there's no county anything
Do you live in san Francisco?
Fuckn hell
lmao
We have our highway talk here
Even worse
The 101 freeway is always packed here
Is that the freeway that collapsed during 89?
the corrider that runs through all the major job centers on the peninsula
anybody who works on the peninsula takes 101
it's bad
unless they take 280
that's also bad
and of course since like half of the peopl ein the south bay work on the peninsula
cause fuck palo alto
Everywhere
it gets bad
Yup
I've visited LA
yeah it's bad
like where the fuck are people going at 2pm on a sunday?
why is there congestion at that time?
Exactly lol
The 5 is pretty shit too, once you've past all the mountains to the north of the valley it's just plains and boring shit all the way to Sacramento (and shitty valley cities)
It's very scenic
it's slower but worth it
I had to go to San Francisco for a funeral and we took the 5 and some other retarded highway to get to the 101, very boring and sad, when we reached the 101 to Salinas there were mountains, hills, vineyards, it was beautiful
The way back was pretty neat too
Once in LA, it was all trash
I'd guess lmao
We arrived at LA at around 9 I think? There was traffic in DTLA
It really do be that way
On jah it do
Lmao
Will do when I get home hahaha
Loool
I mean don't translate that only read the English text and you'll laugh
Someone sent it in a group that I'm in
The translator guy was too lazy to do his job
😂
What's a domestic cup?

A cup raised in a home, as opposed to a wild cup
Gotta watch out for those wild cups
I once had to fight off a pack of almost 50 of them
if you ever find a cup that you don't own in your house DON'T POUR ANYTHING INTO IT, that's how they feed, you could get an infestation
That's hilarious
it's not, they can kill

x10000000000

Felicidades!
@torn moss I tried, but it did a pretty good job
Sometimes google translate gets things right
It rarely gets subjunctive right though
if you don't know one or two specific words go ahead and use translate.
But know if they're masculine or feminine, etc
i'd recommend using any dictionary
translators don't know context and may only give you one meaning
I use spanishdict a lot
it's great
Once you've learned spanish syntax you shouldn't be translating full sentences, just looking up the words and composing the sentences yourself
and spanishdict has set phrases as well
I've been fully converted to using wordreference
In terms of translations I think it's roughly on par with SpanishDict but its knowledge of phrases easily beats that of SpanishDict

I would use wordreference but it's annoying that it doesn't automatically detect the language
Spanishdict is way more polished in that regard
You're right about the phrases though wow
Oh and it does automatically detect the language

aunque no sé python
Bueno, no pasa nada
Así se aprende, fallando
Mi primera examen de Java a papel me salió fatal
Prefeririía fallar en clase :V
Me había bloqueado
