I want to mention about the OS thing again, I use emacs the text OS because the top layer of an OS's responsibility is giving you great power in composing programs, in combining them and your use of them. Unix Oses are typically decent at this with their idea of short, simple programs that compose by piping STDOUT to STDIN and what not, but emacs seems to be close to the ideal for composing text software, and thus I can make a powerful workflow combining all the text based programs I need
I've ranted about this 300x I'm sure but I also want to experiment with taking this idea further
and making a visual OS-like program that likewise plays with being highly composable

Aight so I’ve been staying up late heaps talking to a tutor every night tryna learn Spanish cause my girlfriend and her parents are spanish and I told her just before that I was learning cause I thought it would be kinda cute and something that shows some effort and she comes at me saying she doesnt want me doing it cause it’d be belittling if I spoke Spanish to her parents and they can speak English just fine so why even bother learning. I know they speak English but I though maybe they’d see the effort i me going to the lengths of learning a third language for a girl and I don’t even think she realised how bad that makes me feel cause I wasted so much time learning for her to just shut me down and she’s getting all mad at me because I was tryna explain why I thought it was a good idea. What you think? Is it wrong for me to do that?

If you consider yourself a student of a language, why wouldn’t you want to practice it as much as possible? I don’t find it insulting when a Spanish-speaker speaks to me in English when I can speak Spanish just fine. In my opinion, there are a lot of wrongs here. I don’t have the full story, but it sounds like your approach was a little odd. If you had approached it with an angle of “you and your family inspired me to learn Spanish” instead of “I’m learning it just for you,” it might have gone over a little better. That being said, her angry response was uncalled for. I doubt her family would be upset if you told them that you are learning Spanish as I have found the majority of Spanish speakers really, really love it when someone tries to communicate in Spanish with them. I have found, with those who speak English as well, it is a good idea to offer a “language exchange” of sorts where you speak with them in their language and they speak with you in yours. Mutual practice puts you on even levels. Perhaps you should tell her how it made you feel and maybe discuss why they might find it offensive. Sorry I can’t help more.

I have a good friend that made a Mexican friend at her job, and she always used to tell how offended her friend felt when she spoke Spanish and would even sometimes bully her about it if she made a mistake. She thinks it has to do with certain Spanish speakers (in this case I think it's a vocal minority from our generation) that think you're belittling them or saying to them you can't speak English well.
