yeah, i love using thicc for guys. my american friends get so creeped out when i randomly call them thicc as a joke

ashen mist
#

Are you a guy

thick hound
#

Some people also call their friends thots here

ashen mist
#

Rofl

random elk
#

I'm a guy, yeah haha. I'm not attracted to them whatsoever but I just love seeing their reactions

#

in the UK, thick is an insult though lmao

celest bay
#

A had a friend who called any friend of his a whore regardless of their gender

thick hound
#

Like being thickheaded?

celest bay
#

Granted he’s a marine so he has zero filter

random elk
#

LOL

#

at least he doesn't discriminate

celest bay
#

It’s true

thick hound
#

Lmfaooo

random elk
#

nooo

#

thick as in dense / really, really stupid (not intelligent)

#

wait

#

is that thickheaded?

thick hound
#

Gotcha

steep token
#

Yeah

random elk
#

i was thinking of thick skinned for some reason

#

ah

thick hound
#

Thought so lmao

random elk
#

yeah, sorry mb

#

thick as in thick-headed!

thick hound
#

You're good

random elk
#

how old are you guys btw?

ashen mist
#

4

random elk
#

what do you all do? if you don't mind me asking

steep token
#

a fetus

thick hound
#

16

random elk
#

a fetus? sounds yummy

steep token
#

but lol I’m 20

random elk
#

16?!

steep token
#

SOUNDS YUMMY LOL

thick hound
#

LMFAO

steep token
#

That reminds me of that one satire

#

About eating babies

random elk
#

fuck me, I'm 25. I feel so old

steep token
#

haha not too far off mate

thick hound
#

I guess I'm the fetus then

steep token
#

Loool

#

Delicious thinky

ashen mist
#

My computer died

random elk
#

sluuuurp

ashen mist
#

Fml

steep token
#

Still in uni

ashen mist
#

You?

random elk
#

oh nice - you say uni

steep token
#

Yep

#

?

random elk
#

what are y'all studying? 😄

#

I'm doing a master's degree atm!

steep token
#

Oh cool! Still undergrad lol

#

Doing chemistry

celest bay
#

Who said they’re 25?

ashen mist
#

@random elk

celest bay
#

I’m 26

random elk
#

oh nice. I know absolutely nothing about chemistry. To make conversation, I usually ask: organic or inorganic chemistry?

thick hound
#

I'm currently in early college

ashen mist
#

You mean high school?

celest bay
#

Woo old club

random elk
#

oh, wow - grannypants @celest bay

thick hound
#

No

celest bay
#

Icri

steep token
#

Hmm both

celest bay
#

Only turned 26 like a week ago

thick hound
#

Early college is both high school and college 👀

steep token
#

I finished my organic classes and start inorganic next semester

ashen mist
#

Oh wow neat

steep token
#

Ooo dang mob

#

Look at you

random elk
#

ah, I don't know anything else apart from that regarding chemistry lmao. What year are you in?

#

dang LOL

still sluice
#

I heard O-Chem is a bitch of a class

steep token
#

3rd year hahah

random elk
#

love hearing dang

steep token
#

YES IT IS

#

O chem

#

I love it

#

Yet

thick hound
#

And I'm working towards getting an associates in science so I can study Computer Science once I get to big boi college

steep token
#

It was painful

#

Ooo that sounds like a program my friend used to be in

#

They lived in Missouri

still sluice
#

I was studying Physics before I changed

random elk
#

that sounds really cool @thick hound. Do you take classes at a college or at your high school?

celest bay
#

Someone I know did a double major in biology and chemistry in 3 years
I have no idea how she survived

ashen mist
#

dang

#

she skipped showering and eating, that's for sure

thick hound
#

It's a high school that's situated on a community college campus

random elk
#

in the States, you usually do majors and minors, right?

ashen mist
#

yeah

still sluice
#

Absolute masochist

steep token
#

Yep we do

ashen mist
#

some schools also support multiple degrees

steep token
#

I have 2 majors and 2 minors

celest bay
#

I knew her from playing Minecraft I was like HOW CAN YOU PLAY GAMES AND DO THIS

ashen mist
#

so instead of 1 degree with2 majors, you get 2 separate degrees

#

@steep token why

#

why do that to urself

steep token
#

LOL

thick hound
#

So we take classes in both the high school building as well as in the actual college

steep token
#

Absolute masochist

thick hound
#

Double major and minor wtf

steep token
random elk
#

in the UK, we do either just 1 major or a double major (so, you take all the core courses but only do 50% of the optional courses for both subjects)

celest bay
#

Holy shit puntos

random elk
#

i did a triple major in spanish, french and japanese

steep token
#

There’s a lot of overlap

ashen mist
#

bruh

steep token
#

So not as bad as it sounds

ashen mist
#

so you can read my photo haha @random elk

thick hound
#

Damn polyglot

steep token
#

Wow

#

Are your fluent mitsu

ashen mist
#

y ahora estĂĄs acĂĄ para practicar mĂĄs?

still sluice
#

I studied multiple languages as well. It was a mistake because they were all bleeding together lol

celest bay
#

I got an associates and a bachelors in 5 years with overlap I feel inadequate

steep token
#

I think it’s easier if the languages have no similarity

still sluice
#

Russian is surprisingly similar to Spanish btw

steep token
#

Like learning Japanese and French at the same time

ashen mist
#

srsly?

thick hound
#

Meanwhile I think I'm just gonna major in the one thing GWmythiMonkaT

ashen mist
#

the russian alphabet throws me off

#

everythign is backwards

still sluice
#

Yes

thick hound
#

Cyrillic is fun to read

celest bay
#

That’s what I did mob lol

random elk
#

In Japanese, yeah. I lived there for a few years. 1 year as an exchange student and 1 year for work after graduating. My French and Spanish are hella rusty because I haven't really used them as much since graduating. I was C1 at the end of it but now I absolutely suck tbh. I can write essays and read literature no problem but when it comes to speaking/listening, I've lost a lot of my skill

sacred slate
#

Don’t most people have one major

steep token
#

Omggg that’s so cool

still sluice
#

The alphabet is cake. It might be a little daunting the first day but I got it down the second or third day

steep token
#

I started my japanese studies 3 weeks ago

celest bay
#

Yeah most have a major and maybe a minor

random elk
#

oh nice!

#

Japanese is wonderful

#

How are you studying it?

ashen mist
#

I gave up on japanese

steep token
#

Right now self study. Im focusing on hiragana and katakana

thick hound
#

I want to learn Japanese properly one day

steep token
#

And once I get comfortable with that Ill move on to grammar

ashen mist
#

I learned how to write kanji so that was pretty cool at least

steep token
#

Using a few websites my friends suggested

thick hound
#

I can read hiragana, katakana, and a bit of kanji but I can't actually put anything together because idk much language wise hyperxd

steep token
#

How did you study @random elk ?

#

Ooo niceee mob 😄

random elk
#

I did it at uni. Guys follow this link (it's a student forum for Brits or those wanting to study in the UK). Look at my posts (Quick-use) about studying Japanese. Go to post #âš“ăƒ»contact-staff

#

4

#

lol

#

oops

#

4

steep token
#

Ooo

random elk
#

I HIGHLY recommend a good textbook for Japanese

steep token
#

I’ll check that out

random elk
#

really, really if you're serious about Japanese

#

invest in some textbooks

#

the ones I've linked are fantastic

#

they'll literally hold your hand and properly teach you Japanese

#

they're absolutely fantastic as well

#

Won't feel like you're cramming or straining to learn something

#

it's really fluid and fun

thick hound
#

I really want to learn Italian someday too 🙏

steep token
#

:: thanks a bunch mitsu! Yeah Im really excited to get deeper

#

Oops wrong blob

#

*blobheart

#

Italian is pretty cool

random elk
#

Italian seems cool. If you can read a newspaper in Spanish and/or French, you can read a newspaper in Italian as well

thick hound
#

Yes, I've noticed that

random elk
#

I've never studied Italian but I actually have no problem understanding texts etc

#

I can't produce a single thing though lol

thick hound
#

In the current anime adaptation of JoJo, it takes place in Italy, so they have a lot of on screen text that's in Italian that I can understand

random elk
#

haha

#

nice

thick hound
#

Plus in one of the openings, it features the major villain speaking in Italian and I didn't notice until I heard him say "cantaré" and went "hold up I know this word"

random elk
#

my top anime (in no particular order):

FMA Brotherhood
Hunter x Hunter
Fate;Zero
Code Geass
Steins;Gate

#

hopefully, you can take a class in Italian at college. that'd be sweet

thick hound
#

The college I want to go to only has Spanish peepocry

steep token
#

I loved code geass and steins;gate. So nostalgic.

#

Oh rip

#

Im surprised they only have one language

thick hound
#

Well some other languages but I don't remember which ones those were since they aren't listed on the main course list

#

One was Japanese but that's all I remember for certain

steep token
#

Ahhh I see I see

#

Im planning to go to a tanabata festival this sunday so excited

random elk
#

oh, you're in Japan?

steep token
#

No I wish

#

It’s just the local japanese community holding it

random elk
#

ah

#

that's still really cool

#

by the way

#

are any of you studying Spanish atm?

#

formally?

steep token
#

Yes one of my minors

random elk
#

Ah, let me send you a document I made when I used to tutor Spanish

thick hound
#

I've thought of minoring in it in college but I'm not sure if I want to 100% go through with it

random elk
#

it's for writing essays and speaking etc

thick hound
#

I much prefer learning it casually like this rather than formally

steep token
#

Awesome! That sounds like a great resource, especially for my class next semester

#

It’ll be focused on conversation

random elk
#

Sent. It might be a little formal

#

I mainly used it to teach essay writing and formal speeches / conversations

#

because of the doc, the ones I used to tutor would get like 100% for their essays etc in AP level Spanish or uni essays

#

I worked really hard on it. let me know if it's of any use

ashen mist
#

whats this?

random elk
#

@thick hound Definitely agree with that btw. you do you!

ashen mist
#

cheat codes for school??

random elk
#

lmao. I wish

#

I can send it to you as well

steep token
#

For sure! So far from what I’ve seen it looks fantastic

random elk
#

one sec

thick hound
#

can you send me it as well? i have a spanish class next semester

ashen mist
#

oh that was unexpected haha gracias

random elk
#

de nada

steep token
#

It’s early christmas

random elk
#

stuff like SegĂșn mi criterio, Por añadidura, Por ende etc really get the examiners excited lmao

#

haha

#

you're most welcome

ashen mist
#

you should send that to the mods to see if they want to include that in learning resources

thick hound
#

We've all been blessed by an angel

ashen mist
#

if you want

random elk
#

I would but admittedly I made it myself and although I'd love for everyone to see it and benefit from it, I'd hate for someone to take credit for it. If that makes sense?

#

I spent a lot of time thinking up / editing it etc when I used to tutor

ashen mist
#

gotcha

#

ill send for you then

#

jk jkjk

random elk
#

LMAO

steep token
random elk
#

oh yeah, how do I get the tags? for my Spanish level etc?

thick hound
random elk
#

shame I can't do: .iwas x

#

haha

thick hound
#

You said you can still understand just as well right though?

random elk
#

yeah, I guess so!

#

what's a heritage speaker?

steep token
#

Hmm like your family

random elk
#

where do I ssee all of the available tags?

thick hound
#

Someone who grew up with the language in their family but can't speak it fluently

#

like me hyperxd

random elk
#

oh, wow. Do you have a hispanic background?

thick hound
#

Yeah, my dad is Salvadoran

random elk
#

that's so cool. i've been looking at salvadoran food lately lol

steep token
#

Ooo awesome

thick hound
#

But he and my mom both spoke to me in English since I was a kid so it's my native language as a result

steep token
#

It’s okay that’s with my parents too

#

Except not spanish

random elk
#

what do your parents speak?

steep token
#

Vietnamese

random elk
#

oooh

#

I have a close friend whose parents are from Vietnam. He was born and bred in the UK though. Anyways, growing up he always thought he was Chinese for some reason. The other Chinese kids in the playground in primary school used to pick on him and be like: you're not one of us. you can't even speak Chinese. That's when he realised he wasn't Chinese

#

LOL

#

talk about identity crisis

steep token
#

LOOOL

#

omg haha

ashen mist
#

born and bred

#

that phrase

#

and LOOOOL just read the rest of the story

thick hound
#

Bruh moment

steep token
#

Identity crisis to another level roopopcorn

random elk
#

poor guy

#

you guys don't say born and bred? lmao

#

born and raised?

steep token
#

Yeah

#

Born and raised

#

Is more common

random elk
#

ah. both are common in the UK but born and bred maybe more so(?)

steep token
#

Yeah I have heard some people say born and bred but not too many

ashen mist
#

bred sounds more like animals

random elk
#

yeah, or some really horny guy: let me breed you

#

LOL

ashen mist
#

bruh

#

too far

#

my english is getting worse

random elk
#

what are you finna do?

still sluice
#

I was the opposite. I learned 2 languages before English despite living in an English speaking country

#

Because of this, people often ask where I’m from

random elk
#

@still sluice Oh wow, what were your languages? Did you learn them at home from your parents?

still sluice
#

Yes, indeed. Chinese and Lao. My dad spoke a dialect of Chinese that isn’t too common called Teochew.

#

I don’t remember how to speak Chinese, but I understand it. I can still speak Lao, however.

random elk
#

Lao? Is that from Laos?

still sluice
#

When I learned English, British English and American English mixed together so half my spelling is British and half is American lol

random elk
#

that's really cool though. your background sounds insanely interesting

still sluice
#

That is from Laos

#

Although people often call the language Laotian as well

random elk
#

how come you don't know Chinese anymore? did your parents stop speaking it?

#

brb! my league game is about to start...

still sluice
#

I’ve never known the difference. My mom just calls it Lao. My parents switched to English when I was learning it. My mom’s parents lived with us so I spoke Lao everyday and I only talk to my dad’s side once every few months

#

My Chinese just dwindled over the years and they have to speak English to my brothers and me now

#

I’m about to go get sushi with my friend. I’ll be back, feel free to ping or dm me and I’ll see it later today

ashen mist

#

where did all the free community labs go

#

wtfffff

steep token
#

ohhh league I'm guessing you're in the EU server?

random elk
#

yeah, EUW

#

@still sluice Do you visit China or Laos?

still sluice
#

I haven’t because I didn’t have a passport, but I’m planning a trip to Laos next year with my family

random elk
#

oh yeah

#

I read somewhere that only like 30% of Americans have a passport or something

#

I couldn't believe it!

still sluice
#

Yes, I think it’s mainly because we don’t have vacations and if we do, most people don’t have enough vacation days to travel abroad.

#

I had a passport when I was younger, but I never renewed it when it expired. In my city, it’s common to have one because Mexico is 15 minutes away. Guess the city if you’d like.

torn jewel

Nice

torn jewel
random elk
#

@torn jewel You look thicc in that picture roopopcorn

torn jewel
#

sou desu blobblush

random elk
ashen mist
#

"we don't have vacations" lol rip

#

@still sluice you near San Diego?

#

I guess SD is like 25 minutes away

still sluice
#

Yes, I live in San Diego lol

#

The border is about 15-20 minutes away from me

ashen mist
#

Dang lol

#

I was there some time ago in SD

#

Was debating if I wanted to visit Mexico

#

Didn't seem to valerme la pena at the time

still sluice
#

Damn, I should have joined this server back then. Then I would have at least known.

ashen mist
#

Haha

still sluice
#

Well, if you're ever in the area, don't be a stranger. I like to do touristy things although I live here

ashen mist
#

Thx

#

Don't know when I'll go back lol

still sluice
#

Fair enough. Are you from a different state?

ashen mist
#

Yeah. Maryland

#

Other side of the country loooool

still sluice
#

Holy shit

#

That's not at all what I thought lol

ashen mist
#

Hhaha

still sluice
#

I was expecting Arizona or NorCal.

#

Well, I hope you enjoyed your stay

ashen mist
#

Jajaja thanks

#

I did

steep token
#

Oh cool I used to live in SD

#

Did you always live there?

still sluice
#

Nice! Born and raised

steep token
#

Awesome are you in uni or still secondary school?

still sluice
#

Uni

steep token
#

O:

still sluice
#

Studying linguistics and music

steep token
#

That’s awesome! I lived more like in SD county and a city near it xD

#

It’s been so long though

#

That’d be wild if you happened to live in the same area lmao

still sluice
#

Lol what area did you live in?

steep token
#

But that’s a little farther

still sluice
#

Oh unfortunately not

steep token
#

Yeah

still sluice
#

Yeah, I live about 10 minutes away from downtown

steep token
#

Nice nice loved it while I was there blobblush great weather

still sluice
#

Indeed. Not a fan of the summer, however. It's not insanely hot, but I'm the kind that gets hot easily so I favour the winter.

steep token
#

Ahh that’s fair. I’m the exact opposite almost haha I can’t stand the cold. I think it was 60 degrees and I was chilly blobsweats

still sluice
#

Oh, I see. 70 makes me feel warm and start to sweat a little

steep token
#

I believe my house temperature is always at 75 (or around it) so that’s possibly why

#

Also earlier you mentioned linguistics/music, that’s pretty fascinating

#

How’d you get into them?

still sluice
#

I've always had an interest in languages and their relationships to each other. It's been a hobby of mine to learn bits of languages. Music, on the other hand, was an interest since I was a small child. I primarily sing now, but, growing up, I played instruments in bands and wind ensembles

steep token
#

Ooo how impressive! What other languages do you know?

still sluice
#

Other than the ones I grew up with? Studying Spanish, of course, but I also learned some French and Russian.

#

I can sing in Italian, but I must admit I don't know much about speaking the language

steep token
#

Hahah you’re pretty well versed then. What’d you grow up with?

still sluice
#

My parents taught me Chinese and Lao before English

steep token
#

Oh wait

#

I brain farted I remember now haha

still sluice
#

Lol I was just typing out my story again

steep token
#

😂😂 you can say it again if you wish to

still sluice
#

Well, if you remember, then it's fine haha

steep token
#

But color me impressed. That’s quite a unique profile you have there! I just went into STEM like a normal lad :p

#

Learning languages is a great hobby though. Do you ever plan to study Chinese again?

still sluice
#

Thank you! I definitely considered learning Mandarin among other Asian languages

#

The main obstacle for me is the writing system. They have characters for each word and have compound characters for a word that wouldn't even relate to the original characters. Korean, however, has something similar to an alphabet system and I did learn a little of it.

ashen mist
#

korean is phonetic

#

so you don't have to deal with stuff like kanji

#

unless you go old school and learn chinese characters because that's what koreans did back in the day lol

still sluice
#

I've heard that too. I love the simplicity of phonetic languages.

steep token
#

Yeah, I have heard Korean is easier to learn compared to Japanese and Mandarin due to that. I’m learning Japanese right now and I’m already sweating thinking about the Kanji I need to know blobnervous

ashen mist
#

lol

#

<

#

here's one for you

#

(my pic)

steep token
#

xD

ashen mist
#

literally

#

here's "one"

steep token
#

Wait wot

ashen mist
#

it's the formal kanji for "one"

steep token
#

O_O really? I thought it was a line

ashen mist
#

the regular one is

#

but in stuff like legal documents, to prevent forgery, they have a formal version

#

cuz you can just add 2 more strokes and make it a 3 lol

steep token
#

Ohh

#

That’s fair

ashen mist
#

at least, I think that's the reason

still sluice
#

It sounds reasonable enough

ashen mist
#

speaking of numbers, what trips me up with korean/japanese number systems is they go by 10000

#

instead of 1000 like english/spanish

steep token
#

How come they group like that?

ashen mist
#

idk

#

but if you want to say million, you say "a hundred ten thousands"

#

so big numbers can trip you up lolol

steep token
still sluice
#

I'm getting tripped up just reading about it lol

steep token
#

^

still sluice
#

It's giving me flashbacks to counting in French

#

Although French wasn't bad

ashen mist
#

so they have a word for "ten thousand" and a word for "100 million", which is 10k*10k

#

pretty sure korean is the same, though I don't know the word for 100 million

#

korean has a word for 10k

#

same as the one in japanese i think

#

but yeah, numbers are funny

#

249million = 2 "100 million" 4900 "ten thousands"

#

trippy

steep token
#

very roopopcorn

#

But interesting nonetheless

ashen mist
#

if you trust quora, here's the answer

#

tl;dr China

celest bay
ashen mist
#

I boycott french, sorry

celest bay
#

this is more math related

ashen mist
#

i boycott math too

celest bay
#

oh dear

still sluice
#

Seems like an interesting watch. I'll watch it later. All I remember is French counting after 79 is unreasonable. They say 4 20s to say 80 and they say 4 20s and 15 to say 95. Hopefully the video also explains why it is the way it is.

celest bay
#

yep, something like 91 is 4 20 + 11

cursive wave
#

Hahahaha

#

You think French numbers are bad

#

Yall should look at the Danish number system

still sluice
#

I don't think it's bad, I think it's more complicated than it should be. I'm dreading looking up the Danish system now, though.

cursive wave
#

Haha it works for them I guess

#

50 in danish is 2.5*20

#

Or actually (3-0.5)*20

#

60 is 3*20

#

70 is (4-0.5)*20

#

Etc

celest bay
#

related

#

i'd like to thank spanish and english for having really simple counting systems blobsweats

cursive wave
#

Hahaha ikr

#

Although English numbers and telling time still mess me up sometimes as it's backwards compared to Dutch

#

Or rather dutch is backwards

celest bay
#

oh dear god

cursive wave
#

So instead of saying twenty one in Dutch it's one and twenty

#

Een en twintig

celest bay
#

ohhh I think english used to do that

cursive wave
#

Yea I think so

celest bay
#

but at some point we stopped

cursive wave
#

In old English

#

Also for time we don't say eg four thirty but we say half five

#

So take half an hour away from five

celest bay
#

I think it's in lincolns address he says four score and seven

#

so 4 20s and 7

#

for 87, and that was only... 100 something years ago

#

oh half five is used in the UK

#

only it's for 5:30 I think

#

half past five -> half five

ashen mist
#

i prefer the korean/japanese system

celest bay
#

just for additional dutch to english confusion lol

ashen mist
#

much simpler imo

celest bay
#

what's that?

ashen mist
#

15 = 10 5

#

not "fifteen" or "quince"

celest bay
#

oh yeah

ashen mist
#

25 is 2 10 5

#

there's no "twenty" or "thirty"

Hey @ashen mist I just wanted to comment on your comment jn #đŸŸăƒ»áŽ‡ÉŽâˆ•beginner. We actually can say whether problems are impossible for computers to do. And proper virus detection is one of those undecidable problems

ashen mist

How

I mean impossible now and in the future

Also impossible is different from infeasible

Yes exactly

No it's impossible

There's a very rigurous proof for it

Have you heard of the halting problem?

@cursive wave haha fair enough. Calculus was mandatory for my degree

marsh linden
#

math glare

ashen mist
#

Though I took additional calc classes because I hate myself

cursive wave
#

Yea only Calc I and II are mandatory for my degree

ashen mist
#

Usually our track was calc 1, 2, 3 (where you get to multivariable stuff) as intro classes. But those aren't proof based, so math majors are required to take at least 1 proof-based calc course

#

And then there's a sequel class for the masochists

#

Advanced Calc I/II

cursive wave
#

Hmm for comp Sci we do Calc 1 and 2, and then two discrete math courses which cover proofs and then linear algebra and numerical analysis

#

But my uni offers up to Calc 5 in undergrad

median trail
#

calc 5? oh shit

#

i took 4 calc courses but the last one wasn't calculus at least most of it, we studied green integrals and that stuff and after that we moved to dif eq

ashen mist
#

Oh my comp sci track only required up to calc 2 I think? I was talking about the maths degree track

lucid junco
#

Calc 5 is turbocalculus

gentle heath
#

what on earth is calc 5

#

it gets multivariable in 3

lucid junco
#

I literally just told you

gentle heath
#

turbocalculus yes

#

but what does turbocalc entail

arctic niche
#

from reddit calc 5 looks like Laplace Transforms and Fourier series

#

but in my school it isn't calc 5, rather it is part of linear algebra and we take it after we are done with it

#

just think of waves n shit and you try to understand them using advanced techniques

#

This stuff is important in engineering classes on vibrations, and many electrical engineering stuff i don't understand but do with AC currents

#

In my school at least turbo calculus isn't the hardest class, it is calc 4, I am pretty sure everyone failed the final, the teacher gave us some of the hardest problems possible and even with the proper techniques there was some trick you had to employ to get the final answer

#

it was MC, no partial credit peepocry

lucid junco
#

waves and functions and shit

arctic niche
#

ah

#

so I was right

gentle heath
#

what's in calc 4 then

#

we don't class our stuff like that here

#

I have 0 clue

arctic niche
#

triple integrals, vector fields, green's therom, divergence therom, stoke's therom, divergence and curl integrals

#

have you ever taken a course on E&M?

gentle heath
#

oo fancy

#

and nah I think where I am rn would be just starting calc 3

#

by ur measures

arctic niche
#

I am not sure why Edsel says it isn't really calculus, you apply calculus to solve problems that would be extremely tedious to solve

#

gauss's law is a life saved in E&M

gentle heath
#

what is E&M?

arctic niche
#

electricity and magnetism

gentle heath
#

ah

#

ew

#

arctic niche
#

what are you

then you shoudn't really care about this stuff

#

I thought you guys only go up to calc 2

gentle heath
#

well

#

for us they go up to calc 3

because there is vectors and stuff

arctic niche
#

calculus

lucid junco
#

no

#

college wills it so

gentle heath
#

and so it shall be

arctic niche
#

Well that is interesting I guess

#

most of the ics majors at my school detest calculus, I am pretty sure there would be a riot if they were forced to go to calc 5 lol

gentle heath
#

dew is simply more than the average cs member

arctic niche
#

I mean I don't really know why you would need to know Fourier series for CS

lucid junco
#

Computer networks

arctic niche
#

I think there is an integrated cs class for that now that I think about that

#

in my school

median trail
#

i took laplace in calc 4

#

along with dif eq

still radish
#

has anyone ever actually used laplace transforms

lucid junco
#

yes

still radish
#

go on

#

i struggle to imagine a scenario when you would actually need this advanced maths

#

what on earth would you be doing

arctic niche
#

I already gave you examples for enginering

#

analyizing AC waves, and vibrations in rebar/structures

still radish
#

but have you done it

arctic niche
#

no

still radish
#

ive yet to meet anyone who actually needs fourier transforms for their work

arctic niche
#

well yeah, no one for example does long division, but it useful in understanding your work on a deeper level and also weeds out people who are doing engineering for the wrong reasons

still radish
#

fair enough i guess it's just an aptitude test

#

but someone must be doing this

arctic niche
#

a lot of calculations and designs are done by computers too

#

but it is important to realize that there is some nuance in jobs that require you to stray from what is given, you shouldn't just trust the software 100%

lucid junco
#

Only trust the software 100% if it is written by Dew

torn jewel
#

when learning any sort of math its too common for not even teachers to understand the importance of intuition building, and so no intuition rote calculation gets taught on top of non intuitive rote calculation on top of non intuitive rote calculation until you've built like this giant dead mass of math scar tissue and are trying to use it as skin (not the best metaphor but meh)

arctic niche
#

I am not sure what you are trying to say

torn jewel
#

its not easy to explain, and I would forget the scar tissue thing, I'm sure there's some similarity that I was catching on to but its probably something abstract and obscure

#

do you know what I meant by intuition building?

arctic niche
#

having students learn to solve problems on their own?

still radish
#

basically i was shocked when i started working

torn jewel
#

nah, well maybe yah depending on what you mean; you need to solve problems to build intuition, but 1. not all problem solving will build intuition 2. you don't always have to do it on your own, khanacademy for instance is great about solving problems and building intuition for the student . Anyways, intuition typically is

still radish
#

where are all the differential equations i spent years learning about

torn jewel
#

intuition in general is typically like being able to feel the answers to something, rather than having to think about it (and I think its usually implied that inutition is more automatic), such as when someone says 'my intuition tells me that we shouldn't go in that cave, its dangerous'

median trail
#

that's true huevo, you should be doing reaaaaaaaaaaally complicated if you are actually using laplace transforms

torn jewel
#

in Math, intuition building is like one by one connecting everything you do with some real world meaning you already understand intuitively (and in a way, you connect new intuition to old intuition)

#

allowing you to feel what things mean, rather than just doing calculations sort of blind

#

sometimes building intuition is about just playing with something like its alive and observing what happens; an example being playing with an equation on a graph that will display the changes you make to it live, so you can poke and prod it and get instant feedback

#

its a bigger investment up front but in the long run it makes it a lot quicker to pick up some new math idea

#

of course, its not just math, it goes with everything

#

connecting things you have to think about slowly and consciously to a sort of instinctual thinking

#

bleh </ramble>

median trail
#

nerd

#

kappa

#

you're right, i agree

still radish
#

true but i just want to make money

#

math is a tool for me

torn jewel
#

oh I didn't read the convo before me, I just saw something about using math and went on this ramble

#

although I would say that learning math that way then would possibly be very relevant to you, since in the long run it becomes extremely low effort to learn new math and quicker (but, on the flip side and possibly your point, if you're not interested in it, it may cause stress to do things that way and not be worth it, and if you're doing things in a very engineering-esque way, you may be able to get everything you want done just by crunching numbers, I am not sure)

#

now that I've read a bit above, yea, I guess it goes a bit back to nuance

#

the more nuance you'll need, the more intuition, but there's no guarantee that you'll need lots and lots of nuance /shrug

#

I want to be sure I take a balanced view here

@mortal dagger me podrias explicar algo

#

#

/user

@midnight nexus it kinda reminds me of blues, very beautiful song. Not sure what to call this style either

ashen mist
#

ashen mist
#

mortal dagger

mortal dagger
#
