Are you a guy
Some people also call their friends thots here
Rofl
I'm a guy, yeah haha. I'm not attracted to them whatsoever but I just love seeing their reactions
in the UK, thick is an insult though lmao
A had a friend who called any friend of his a whore regardless of their gender
Like being thickheaded?
Granted heâs a marine so he has zero filter
Itâs true
Lmfaooo
nooo
thick as in dense / really, really stupid (not intelligent)
wait
is that thickheaded?
Gotcha
Yeah
Thought so lmao
You're good
how old are you guys btw?
4
what do you all do? if you don't mind me asking
a fetus
16
a fetus? sounds yummy
but lol Iâm 20
16?!
SOUNDS YUMMY LOL
LMFAO
fuck me, I'm 25. I feel so old
haha not too far off mate
I guess I'm the fetus then
My computer died
sluuuurp
Fml
You?
oh nice - you say uni
Who said theyâre 25?
@random elk
Iâm 26
oh nice. I know absolutely nothing about chemistry. To make conversation, I usually ask: organic or inorganic chemistry?
I'm currently in early college
You mean high school?
Woo old club
oh, wow - grannypants @celest bay
No
Icri
Hmm both
Only turned 26 like a week ago
Early college is both high school and college đ
I finished my organic classes and start inorganic next semester
Oh wow neat
ah, I don't know anything else apart from that regarding chemistry lmao. What year are you in?
dang LOL
I heard O-Chem is a bitch of a class
3rd year hahah
love hearing dang
And I'm working towards getting an associates in science so I can study Computer Science once I get to big boi college
It was painful
Ooo that sounds like a program my friend used to be in
They lived in Missouri
I was studying Physics before I changed
that sounds really cool @thick hound. Do you take classes at a college or at your high school?
Someone I know did a double major in biology and chemistry in 3 years
I have no idea how she survived
It's a high school that's situated on a community college campus
in the States, you usually do majors and minors, right?
yeah
Absolute masochist
Yep we do
some schools also support multiple degrees
I have 2 majors and 2 minors
I knew her from playing Minecraft I was like HOW CAN YOU PLAY GAMES AND DO THIS
so instead of 1 degree with2 majors, you get 2 separate degrees
@steep token why
why do that to urself
LOL
So we take classes in both the high school building as well as in the actual college
Absolute masochist
Double major and minor wtf

in the UK, we do either just 1 major or a double major (so, you take all the core courses but only do 50% of the optional courses for both subjects)
Holy shit puntos
i did a triple major in spanish, french and japanese
Thereâs a lot of overlap
bruh
So not as bad as it sounds
so you can read my photo haha @random elk
Damn polyglot
y ahora estĂĄs acĂĄ para practicar mĂĄs?
I studied multiple languages as well. It was a mistake because they were all bleeding together lol
I got an associates and a bachelors in 5 years with overlap I feel inadequate
I think itâs easier if the languages have no similarity
Russian is surprisingly similar to Spanish btw
Like learning Japanese and French at the same time
srsly?
Meanwhile I think I'm just gonna major in the one thing
Yes
Cyrillic is fun to read
Thatâs what I did mob lol
In Japanese, yeah. I lived there for a few years. 1 year as an exchange student and 1 year for work after graduating. My French and Spanish are hella rusty because I haven't really used them as much since graduating. I was C1 at the end of it but now I absolutely suck tbh. I can write essays and read literature no problem but when it comes to speaking/listening, I've lost a lot of my skill
Donât most people have one major
Omggg thatâs so cool
The alphabet is cake. It might be a little daunting the first day but I got it down the second or third day
I started my japanese studies 3 weeks ago
Yeah most have a major and maybe a minor
I gave up on japanese
Right now self study. Im focusing on hiragana and katakana
I want to learn Japanese properly one day
And once I get comfortable with that Ill move on to grammar
I learned how to write kanji so that was pretty cool at least
Using a few websites my friends suggested
I can read hiragana, katakana, and a bit of kanji but I can't actually put anything together because idk much language wise
I did it at uni. Guys follow this link (it's a student forum for Brits or those wanting to study in the UK). Look at my posts (Quick-use) about studying Japanese. Go to post #âă»contact-staff
4
lol
oops
4
Ooo
I HIGHLY recommend a good textbook for Japanese
Iâll check that out
really, really if you're serious about Japanese
invest in some textbooks
the ones I've linked are fantastic
they'll literally hold your hand and properly teach you Japanese
they're absolutely fantastic as well
Won't feel like you're cramming or straining to learn something
it's really fluid and fun
I really want to learn Italian someday too đ
:: thanks a bunch mitsu! Yeah Im really excited to get deeper
Oops wrong blob
*
Italian is pretty cool
Italian seems cool. If you can read a newspaper in Spanish and/or French, you can read a newspaper in Italian as well
Yes, I've noticed that
I've never studied Italian but I actually have no problem understanding texts etc
I can't produce a single thing though lol
In the current anime adaptation of JoJo, it takes place in Italy, so they have a lot of on screen text that's in Italian that I can understand
Plus in one of the openings, it features the major villain speaking in Italian and I didn't notice until I heard him say "cantaré" and went "hold up I know this word"
my top anime (in no particular order):
FMA Brotherhood
Hunter x Hunter
Fate;Zero
Code Geass
Steins;Gate
hopefully, you can take a class in Italian at college. that'd be sweet
The college I want to go to only has Spanish
I loved code geass and steins;gate. So nostalgic.
Oh rip
Im surprised they only have one language
Well some other languages but I don't remember which ones those were since they aren't listed on the main course list
One was Japanese but that's all I remember for certain
oh, you're in Japan?
ah
that's still really cool
by the way
are any of you studying Spanish atm?
formally?
Yes one of my minors
Ah, let me send you a document I made when I used to tutor Spanish
I've thought of minoring in it in college but I'm not sure if I want to 100% go through with it
it's for writing essays and speaking etc
I much prefer learning it casually like this rather than formally
Awesome! That sounds like a great resource, especially for my class next semester
Itâll be focused on conversation
Sent. It might be a little formal
I mainly used it to teach essay writing and formal speeches / conversations
because of the doc, the ones I used to tutor would get like 100% for their essays etc in AP level Spanish or uni essays
I worked really hard on it. let me know if it's of any use
whats this?
@thick hound Definitely agree with that btw. you do you!
cheat codes for school??
For sure! So far from what Iâve seen it looks fantastic
one sec
can you send me it as well? i have a spanish class next semester
oh that was unexpected haha gracias
de nada
Itâs early christmas
stuff like SegĂșn mi criterio, Por añadidura, Por ende etc really get the examiners excited lmao
haha
you're most welcome
you should send that to the mods to see if they want to include that in learning resources
We've all been blessed by an angel
if you want
I would but admittedly I made it myself and although I'd love for everyone to see it and benefit from it, I'd hate for someone to take credit for it. If that makes sense?
I spent a lot of time thinking up / editing it etc when I used to tutor
LMAO

oh yeah, how do I get the tags? for my Spanish level etc?
You can do .iam x (like B2) in #đ€ă»general-bot
Hmm like your family
where do I ssee all of the available tags?
Someone who grew up with the language in their family but can't speak it fluently
like me
oh, wow. Do you have a hispanic background?
Yeah, my dad is Salvadoran
that's so cool. i've been looking at salvadoran food lately lol
Ooo awesome
But he and my mom both spoke to me in English since I was a kid so it's my native language as a result
what do your parents speak?
Vietnamese
oooh
I have a close friend whose parents are from Vietnam. He was born and bred in the UK though. Anyways, growing up he always thought he was Chinese for some reason. The other Chinese kids in the playground in primary school used to pick on him and be like: you're not one of us. you can't even speak Chinese. That's when he realised he wasn't Chinese
LOL
talk about identity crisis
Bruh moment
Identity crisis to another level
ah. both are common in the UK but born and bred maybe more so(?)
Yeah I have heard some people say born and bred but not too many
bred sounds more like animals
what are you finna do?
I was the opposite. I learned 2 languages before English despite living in an English speaking country
Because of this, people often ask where Iâm from
@still sluice Oh wow, what were your languages? Did you learn them at home from your parents?
Yes, indeed. Chinese and Lao. My dad spoke a dialect of Chinese that isnât too common called Teochew.
I donât remember how to speak Chinese, but I understand it. I can still speak Lao, however.
Lao? Is that from Laos?
When I learned English, British English and American English mixed together so half my spelling is British and half is American lol
that's really cool though. your background sounds insanely interesting
how come you don't know Chinese anymore? did your parents stop speaking it?
brb! my league game is about to start...
Iâve never known the difference. My mom just calls it Lao. My parents switched to English when I was learning it. My momâs parents lived with us so I spoke Lao everyday and I only talk to my dadâs side once every few months
My Chinese just dwindled over the years and they have to speak English to my brothers and me now
Iâm about to go get sushi with my friend. Iâll be back, feel free to ping or dm me and Iâll see it later today
asdjaskdjaskldasdklasdklsjadkaskldjaskldasldjas
where did all the free community labs go
wtfffff
ohhh league I'm guessing you're in the EU server?
I havenât because I didnât have a passport, but Iâm planning a trip to Laos next year with my family
oh yeah
I read somewhere that only like 30% of Americans have a passport or something
I couldn't believe it!
Yes, I think itâs mainly because we donât have vacations and if we do, most people donât have enough vacation days to travel abroad.
I had a passport when I was younger, but I never renewed it when it expired. In my city, itâs common to have one because Mexico is 15 minutes away. Guess the city if youâd like.
vancouver
Nice

@torn jewel You look thicc in that picture
sou desu

"we don't have vacations" lol rip
@still sluice you near San Diego?
I guess SD is like 25 minutes away
Dang lol
I was there some time ago in SD
Was debating if I wanted to visit Mexico
Didn't seem to valerme la pena at the time
Damn, I should have joined this server back then. Then I would have at least known.
Haha
Well, if you're ever in the area, don't be a stranger. I like to do touristy things although I live here
Fair enough. Are you from a different state?
Hhaha
Nice! Born and raised
Awesome are you in uni or still secondary school?
Uni
O:
Studying linguistics and music
Thatâs awesome! I lived more like in SD county and a city near it xD
Itâs been so long though
Thatâd be wild if you happened to live in the same area lmao
Lol what area did you live in?
But thatâs a little farther
Oh unfortunately not
Yeah
Yeah, I live about 10 minutes away from downtown
Nice nice loved it while I was there
great weather
Indeed. Not a fan of the summer, however. It's not insanely hot, but I'm the kind that gets hot easily so I favour the winter.
Ahh thatâs fair. Iâm the exact opposite almost haha I canât stand the cold. I think it was 60 degrees and I was chilly
Oh, I see. 70 makes me feel warm and start to sweat a little
I believe my house temperature is always at 75 (or around it) so thatâs possibly why
Also earlier you mentioned linguistics/music, thatâs pretty fascinating
Howâd you get into them?
I've always had an interest in languages and their relationships to each other. It's been a hobby of mine to learn bits of languages. Music, on the other hand, was an interest since I was a small child. I primarily sing now, but, growing up, I played instruments in bands and wind ensembles
Ooo how impressive! What other languages do you know?
Other than the ones I grew up with? Studying Spanish, of course, but I also learned some French and Russian.
I can sing in Italian, but I must admit I don't know much about speaking the language
Hahah youâre pretty well versed then. Whatâd you grow up with?
My parents taught me Chinese and Lao before English
Lol I was just typing out my story again
đđ you can say it again if you wish to
Well, if you remember, then it's fine haha
But color me impressed. Thatâs quite a unique profile you have there! I just went into STEM like a normal lad :p
Learning languages is a great hobby though. Do you ever plan to study Chinese again?
Thank you! I definitely considered learning Mandarin among other Asian languages
The main obstacle for me is the writing system. They have characters for each word and have compound characters for a word that wouldn't even relate to the original characters. Korean, however, has something similar to an alphabet system and I did learn a little of it.
korean is phonetic
so you don't have to deal with stuff like kanji
unless you go old school and learn chinese characters because that's what koreans did back in the day lol
I've heard that too. I love the simplicity of phonetic languages.
Yeah, I have heard Korean is easier to learn compared to Japanese and Mandarin due to that. Iâm learning Japanese right now and Iâm already sweating thinking about the Kanji I need to know
xD
Wait wot
it's the formal kanji for "one"
O_O really? I thought it was a line
the regular one is
but in stuff like legal documents, to prevent forgery, they have a formal version
cuz you can just add 2 more strokes and make it a 3 lol
at least, I think that's the reason
It sounds reasonable enough
speaking of numbers, what trips me up with korean/japanese number systems is they go by 10000
instead of 1000 like english/spanish
How come they group like that?
idk
but if you want to say million, you say "a hundred ten thousands"
so big numbers can trip you up lolol

I'm getting tripped up just reading about it lol
^
so they have a word for "ten thousand" and a word for "100 million", which is 10k*10k
pretty sure korean is the same, though I don't know the word for 100 million
korean has a word for 10k
same as the one in japanese i think
but yeah, numbers are funny
249million = 2 "100 million" 4900 "ten thousands"
trippy
All three languages are based on the Chinese counting system which used 10^4 as the base unit for large numbers. Ten Thousand (10,000) is man in both Japanese (äž) and Korean (ë§) and wĂ n in Mandarin (äž/èŹ). These are actually the different pronuncia...
if you trust quora, here's the answer
tl;dr China
French numbers can pose problems for non-native speaker - especially when you move beyond 70. Also discussing problems with phone numbers and commas! More li...
I boycott french, sorry
this is more math related
i boycott math too
oh dear
Seems like an interesting watch. I'll watch it later. All I remember is French counting after 79 is unreasonable. They say 4 20s to say 80 and they say 4 20s and 15 to say 95. Hopefully the video also explains why it is the way it is.
yep, something like 91 is 4 20 + 11
Hahahaha
You think French numbers are bad
Yall should look at the Danish number system
I don't think it's bad, I think it's more complicated than it should be. I'm dreading looking up the Danish system now, though.
Haha it works for them I guess
50 in danish is 2.5*20
Or actually (3-0.5)*20
60 is 3*20
70 is (4-0.5)*20
Etc
related
i'd like to thank spanish and english for having really simple counting systems
Hahaha ikr
Although English numbers and telling time still mess me up sometimes as it's backwards compared to Dutch
Or rather dutch is backwards
oh dear god
ohhh I think english used to do that
Yea I think so
but at some point we stopped
In old English
Also for time we don't say eg four thirty but we say half five
So take half an hour away from five
I think it's in lincolns address he says four score and seven
so 4 20s and 7
for 87, and that was only... 100 something years ago
oh half five is used in the UK
only it's for 5:30 I think
half past five -> half five
i prefer the korean/japanese system
just for additional dutch to english confusion lol
much simpler imo
what's that?
oh yeah
it's super easy except there's this weird 10,000 thing after a point
meh
at least in japanese
korean too
so larger numbers get weird
we were just talking about that earlier lol
ah
Yes

ah listo
uso settings = data.copy()
@lucid junco
It's been a minute since I've uploaded. Yes I know this is a lazy edit but listen. Things have happened and I'm going to try my best to upload again.
Hey @ashen mist I just wanted to comment on your comment jn #đă»áŽÉŽâbeginner. We actually can say whether problems are impossible for computers to do. And proper virus detection is one of those undecidable problems
How
I mean impossible now and in the future
Also impossible is different from infeasible
Yes exactly
No it's impossible
There's a very rigurous proof for it
Have you heard of the halting problem?
No
Hmmm OK that'll make it a bit harder to explain but I can try if you want
Ahh OK lol
RTFM
@cursive wave I retract my earlier statements then
Maybe I mixed up the p=NP concepts in my head
Haha no worries mate. It's not something that everyone knows about
Yea P=NP is conjectured to be false tho
Who gonna win the million bucks though
Hard to tell
There's a chance it might never be solved
As per Gödels incompleteness theorem, there ae things which are impossible to prove
Well ty for the follow-up and for teaching me something new
Haha no worries always happy to do so
I wish more people were interested in these types of subjects
I got tired from proofs and theoretical stuff
can't be proven recursively*
Gödel just prove that some things can't be proven on a set by the set itself
maybe there's some connection with others areas, like they do with fermat last theorem
Good chance that there are some connections yea
"why are they talking about proofs again god they do this every freakin day"

@cursive wave I studied math and computer science
Cybersecurity
Ahh I see, so your math background is probably more in cryptography and number theory?
The only bad thing was the lack of useful projects in some classes
Uhh no they were separate degrees so I took the regular math track
I actually did sign up for cryptography and number theory lol
Ohh you did a dual degree?
Regular math track gave me more flexibility to choose classes
Hmm I see, what did you specialize in in math tho
Yeah I originally did 2 majors, but my advisor told me I had enough credits to get 2 degrees
Nothing much really
Just took classes lol
I'm doing a math minor specializing in abstract algebra and graph theory
Yeah I avoided those topics
graph theory â€
have you math nerds done much trading/gambling?
o shit look another thing I can do now I am an adult
at some point you gotta stop reading your math textbooks and make some money
I have my retirement stuff going on
@cursive wave haha fair enough. Calculus was mandatory for my degree
math
Though I took additional calc classes because I hate myself
Yea only Calc I and II are mandatory for my degree
Usually our track was calc 1, 2, 3 (where you get to multivariable stuff) as intro classes. But those aren't proof based, so math majors are required to take at least 1 proof-based calc course
And then there's a sequel class for the masochists
Advanced Calc I/II
Hmm for comp Sci we do Calc 1 and 2, and then two discrete math courses which cover proofs and then linear algebra and numerical analysis
But my uni offers up to Calc 5 in undergrad
calc 5? oh shit
i took 4 calc courses but the last one wasn't calculus at least most of it, we studied green integrals and that stuff and after that we moved to dif eq
Oh my comp sci track only required up to calc 2 I think? I was talking about the maths degree track
Calc 5 is turbocalculus
from reddit calc 5 looks like Laplace Transforms and Fourier series
but in my school it isn't calc 5, rather it is part of linear algebra and we take it after we are done with it
just think of waves n shit and you try to understand them using advanced techniques
An animated introduction to the Fourier Transform. Home page: https://www.3blue1brown.com/ Brought to you by you: http://3b1b.co/fourier-thanks Puzzler at th...
This stuff is important in engineering classes on vibrations, and many electrical engineering stuff i don't understand but do with AC currents
In my school at least turbo calculus isn't the hardest class, it is calc 4, I am pretty sure everyone failed the final, the teacher gave us some of the hardest problems possible and even with the proper techniques there was some trick you had to employ to get the final answer
it was MC, no partial credit
waves and functions and shit
triple integrals, vector fields, green's therom, divergence therom, stoke's therom, divergence and curl integrals
have you ever taken a course on E&M?
oo fancy
and nah I think where I am rn would be just starting calc 3
by ur measures
I am not sure why Edsel says it isn't really calculus, you apply calculus to solve problems that would be extremely tedious to solve
gauss's law is a life saved in E&M
what is E&M?
electricity and magnetism
compsci guy
then you shoudn't really care about this stuff
I thought you guys only go up to calc 2
am in the UK shits not the same
and im not in uni yet anyways
learning what
calculus
and so it shall be
Well that is interesting I guess
most of the ics majors at my school detest calculus, I am pretty sure there would be a riot if they were forced to go to calc 5 lol
dew is simply more than the average cs member
I mean I don't really know why you would need to know Fourier series for CS
Computer networks
I think there is an integrated cs class for that now that I think about that
in my school
has anyone ever actually used laplace transforms
yes
go on
i struggle to imagine a scenario when you would actually need this advanced maths
what on earth would you be doing
I already gave you examples for enginering
analyizing AC waves, and vibrations in rebar/structures
but have you done it
no
ive yet to meet anyone who actually needs fourier transforms for their work
well yeah, no one for example does long division, but it useful in understanding your work on a deeper level and also weeds out people who are doing engineering for the wrong reasons
a lot of calculations and designs are done by computers too
but it is important to realize that there is some nuance in jobs that require you to stray from what is given, you shouldn't just trust the software 100%
Only trust the software 100% if it is written by Dew
when learning any sort of math its too common for not even teachers to understand the importance of intuition building, and so no intuition rote calculation gets taught on top of non intuitive rote calculation on top of non intuitive rote calculation until you've built like this giant dead mass of math scar tissue and are trying to use it as skin (not the best metaphor but meh)
I am not sure what you are trying to say
its not easy to explain, and I would forget the scar tissue thing, I'm sure there's some similarity that I was catching on to but its probably something abstract and obscure
do you know what I meant by intuition building?
having students learn to solve problems on their own?
basically i was shocked when i started working
nah, well maybe yah depending on what you mean; you need to solve problems to build intuition, but 1. not all problem solving will build intuition 2. you don't always have to do it on your own, khanacademy for instance is great about solving problems and building intuition for the student . Anyways, intuition typically is
where are all the differential equations i spent years learning about
intuition in general is typically like being able to feel the answers to something, rather than having to think about it (and I think its usually implied that inutition is more automatic), such as when someone says 'my intuition tells me that we shouldn't go in that cave, its dangerous'
that's true huevo, you should be doing reaaaaaaaaaaally complicated if you are actually using laplace transforms
in Math, intuition building is like one by one connecting everything you do with some real world meaning you already understand intuitively (and in a way, you connect new intuition to old intuition)
allowing you to feel what things mean, rather than just doing calculations sort of blind
sometimes building intuition is about just playing with something like its alive and observing what happens; an example being playing with an equation on a graph that will display the changes you make to it live, so you can poke and prod it and get instant feedback
its a bigger investment up front but in the long run it makes it a lot quicker to pick up some new math idea
of course, its not just math, it goes with everything
connecting things you have to think about slowly and consciously to a sort of instinctual thinking
bleh </ramble>
oh I didn't read the convo before me, I just saw something about using math and went on this ramble
although I would say that learning math that way then would possibly be very relevant to you, since in the long run it becomes extremely low effort to learn new math and quicker (but, on the flip side and possibly your point, if you're not interested in it, it may cause stress to do things that way and not be worth it, and if you're doing things in a very engineering-esque way, you may be able to get everything you want done just by crunching numbers, I am not sure)
now that I've read a bit above, yea, I guess it goes a bit back to nuance
the more nuance you'll need, the more intuition, but there's no guarantee that you'll need lots and lots of nuance /shrug
I want to be sure I take a balanced view here
huevo what are you studying
yes

@gentle heath well, I screwed my maths
def save(self):
"""Saves the settings in a json file"""
with open(f"{dir_path}/db.json",'w') as write_file:
json.dump(self.settings, write_file)
Ok
no me ignores
ok
te paso el mio
{
"censuring_in_channel": [{"channel_id": 501861392593453078, "language": "ES"}],
"banned_words": [],
"rol(es)_allowed": [595054388729610241],
"censured_people": [{"author": "155422817540767745", "n_infractions": 3}],
"Admin_Alert_Channels": []
} ```
ah cierto
SĂ lo es
sĂ
voy a checar
me avisas
u otra opciĂłn, podrĂa ser no escribirlo altiro
hacer algo como
dump = json.dump(self.settings)
dump.replace(", ", ", \n")
json.dump(self.settings, write_file)
Besar a wzrdd y luego guardar
jajaj pasarlo a string
o sea, un objeto empieza con un {, termina con un }
voy
Que te causs el error
vamos a vc? a pasar las penas
si hermano
sĂșper buena idea hacerse un gitlab
vamos a vc
@commands.command()
# @commands.has_any_role(*self.settings['rol(es)_allowed'])
async def set_alert_channel(self, ctx, alert_channel_id, alert_language):
for channel in self.bot.get_all_channels():
if int(alert_channel_id) == channel.id:
self.settings['Admin_Alert_Channels'].append({
'class_object': channel,
'channel_id':channel.id,
'language':alert_language,
})
self.save()
await ctx.send('**Done!**')```
checa class.object.str
solo guarda el id we
si
La programaciĂłn me mata

@mortal dagger me podrias explicar algo
/user

@midnight nexus it kinda reminds me of blues, very beautiful song. Not sure what to call this style either
jajajaja
secuencia de escape
.tar.gz raza superior đ
.tar.bz2
relevant xkcd: https://xkcd.com/1168/
tar -x [file]
LOL
