your parents are swedish immigrants?
realistically i could move to london, skåne, stockholm, or maybe somewhere else in the nordic countries
our streets are so dirty in comparison to like, streets in Germany and stuff
yeah first generation or something like that
idk what it's called but they came here like 20 years ago
but my dad doesn't wanna leave because he has work
your swedish will probably sound really old school and nice then 😄
oh yeah idk any slang hehe
i hope so
classy
haha
you probably know old school slang
im like icelandic
right
isolated on an island
time vault
yes!
I think it was good of your parents to teach you swedish tho, like I know so many kids who have parents who never passed down their language
hehhehehee
my grand father is kind of like that with danish
yeah im really glad they taught me
ooh
but they couldve taught me german and maybe french or even spanish too
I'm so annoyed my great grandmother never passed down welsh, yOU REALISE HOW COOL IT'D BE IF I COULD SPEAK WELSH?
he migrated to sweden quite late in his life, like... i'd guess maybe in his 30s
ohh my gosh
yeah my grandmother who just passed away a few days ago spoke icelandic
she studied the nordic languages in college
he has a very special way of speaking swedish i have never heard anything similar to
so maybe faroese too
interesting
wow
I'd really like to learn a "tough" language like russian, but I just don't have the same passion for these "tough" languages like I do with Spanish
Like I'm not a particular fan of Russia, I just like the feel of the language, so I'd give up pretty quickly
tough like in difficult?
yeah
Spanish is considered an "easy" language, but it's still hard to learn because it's a foreign language, that's what I've always said
did your grand mother live with you in us, flowers?
it's easy language-wise, hard task-wise
i wanna learn finnish
nah only me and my parents are stuck in the US
i think finnish is adorable though
right, for a swede especially i think spanish has got to be a very easy language
people say it sounds hardcore but for me its cute
because we have even more in common with the sounds than english does
ohh yeah
oh yeah pronunciation is 100x easier
rolling r for example (unless you're in that part of sweden)
but the key word is language, it's still hard because it's a language
but spanish is still hard of course
you get me
but once you get into it yuo start to see "ohhhh that makes sense"
yes, still hard
like how do and make are both hacer, that's the same in swedish
actually i really like to study with etymology
also "tienes razón" "du har rätt"
so far like at least 90% of the words i can find related words in english or swedish
how do swedes say "I'm hungry"?
but growing up with english being the main language i learn other languages in it's been harder i guess
yeah that's just "jag är hungrig"
oh right
I know there's a lot of languages like spanish that say "I have hunger"
really, i had no idea
yeah
i thought spanish was being very weird 😄
but those are mostly romance i thought
german - ich habe hunger
if you want to learn a difficult language, why not something crazy like finish or chinese, japanese, or some african language?
russian is still indoeuropean
oh huh
I have no motives to learn an african language or chinese
indoeuropean doesnt mean easy hehe
sanskrit is indoeuyropean
i think even hindi is
purely on the basis that china and africa and their cultures aren't that interesting to me
bvut yeah
still it will have more in common in terms of the general way of approaching the language i guess?
if you want something super hard you have to remove all concepts you're familiar with
a polynesian language for example would be maybe impossible
or at least a native american one
or like
i would be interested in learning asian languages actually, i do have an interest, but i told myself let's see if i can do spanish first at least 😄
they say learning esperanto helps with learning other languages
i think the thing with languages like finnish is sure they have 15 grammatical cases and tons of conjugations, but they still make sense in the context of english
oh you never finish "doing" any language cornelis 😛
but with like, asian languages all the concepts of grammar are completely different
hmm true
like in cantonese iirc adjectives are verbs
but i really like the idea of learning just a completely different approach to grammar and language, seeing how fundamental that is to the human experience
"i good" "i am good"
mhm
Basque is interesting
because from what a basque told me, verbs conjugate for the person doing the action and the thing recieving the action
cases of what?
they say japanese has 8-9 cases but idk I think they're easy
grammatical cases
🤔
it's like if me te lo nos los existed for every noun and adjective
that's the accusative case
"siento" = I feel
i'm the one feeling, right?
yeah but still
it's like conjugations, but for words
like russian
yeah
no of course not
but I think spanish word order is more flexible than english because of two things
verb conjugation and the personal "a"
make it easier to tell who's doing what to who
there's more information conveyed in a singular word
same with russian
there was some meme going around with like 100+ conjugations to a word
yeahh
in finish
lool
finnish goes crazy
all out
but still logical
that's the thing with finnish
cool
if you think about it, words can kinda "conjugate" in spanish too
it's hard because there's so many inflections to learn, but logical because it follows rules and stuff
in a very weak way but like
you got plural, diminutive and then the opposite of the diminutive
finish is something that could be very personally useful because i'm swedish but still so foreign in its approach because different language family
maybe that's what i should try next 😄
hhmm yeah
whereas russian has less things to learn (well, maybe not) but a lot more exceptions and tricky pronunciation and writing
I think I'll end up going for Japanese or something
yeah im trying my hand at finnish
oh yeah?
after spanish french finnish and russian i'll go to cantonese and arabic, maybe hungarian but oh goodness me hungarian is a nightmare
I studied Japanese 2 years ago for like 2 months, and because of casual exposure to katakana, hiragana and the basics, I still retain a lot of the basic grammar and those 2 alphabets
i think i've actually learned more finnish than russian even in the half time that ive been trying to learn it
the more languages you learn the easier it becomes to learn more
btw meme if you do want to learn swedish, i think it's fairly simple language, barely any conjugations, only 2 genders (though they're impossible to guess), grammar pretty similar to english, shares a lot of words with both english and spanish
just because things are more logical
indeed
learn spanish, get used to verb conjugations in other languages and gender
yeah i agree with that
learn russian, get used to cases and different alphabets
both of those
learn any language, get outside of the monolingual comfort zone and learn how to accept new concepts like imperfect and subjunctive
yeah cornelis, it doesn't seem that tough from an english standpoint
other than the pronunciation
there are still some tricky parts
oh gosh dont even start on the pronunciation
spanish is a great starting language because it does just that and teaches you all the conjugations
yep
it lets you reflect on your own languages and say "oh that's the conditional" "oh that's the subjunctive"
it teaches you the terminology, so to speak
you know that region of Norrland where the way of saying "yes" is just like, sucking in air?
yep
exactly, so many kids in my english class can't tell a noun apart from a verb
and then once you've mastered that you can learn russian and say "Oh i understand how there's a present imperfect"
ohhh jeez yeah
yeah exactly
it all clicks together
surely the past in russian may work slightly different to how it does in spanish
but you have a good basis to work off of and you know you can do it
it'll be tricky to learn the prepositional, instrumental and maybe dative cases in russian but once you do you can even move beyond that
eah
yeah
it's all about drawing parallels
that sucking in thing might've been a bit overmemed 😛
I heard in russian certain prepositions change in meaning depending on the case used
that sounds cool
shoop
That’s true
The Russian past tense works differently than romance or Germanic languahes
cuz i still suck
oh yeah
well
i'll throw it out if i want to say yes and i was breathing in anyway, kind of
it's similar to the english one
in that it's just one conjugation
It’s based on gender
but it gets inflected on gender
like "i wrote" "i wrote-a" "i wrote-o" "i wrote-s"
I think I saw a similar thing to do with polish
p o l i s h
Yea -ил -ила
mhm
yeah polish would be more useful than russian for me because a lot of poles live in england
-ал -ала -ало -али
buuut if I had to choose between russian and polish
or ил
Yup
russian in a heartbeat, from what I heard even poles can't polishj
i think polish is probably uhHHHH pretty hard
Russian doesn’t have a word for to be technically
i remember listening to russians speak and i was surprised because for some reason i had assumed it'd be can of a harsh language, but it kind of sounded like a much softer spanish
yeah
they omit it often
Russian - hard
lot of -o endings, many soft sounds
You know to some people greek sounds spanish?
я -- русская
but there's still a verb if you need an infinitive
i guess it's the same thing
быть i think
Yup
я хочу быть тебя maybe?
if you hear a language with a lot of words ending in -o and -a, then...
Будил is the past
🆙 | Kermit leveled up!
Yup
hmm yeah
and you have to learn another verb for every verb for the imperfect if i recall
Russian aspects are super useful
ш щ
ugh
й ы и
о can be pronounced either as o or a
you have to learn an entire new verb to conjugate?
г is g but can be pronounced as v
you mean the entire stem is exchanged?
well
like with ir
ir voy fue totally logical guys!
i think for most of them it just adds по on the beginning, but for сказать the other is говорить i think
indeed c:
the most recent irregular verb I learnt in spanish was a few months ago now but I couldn't believe I went so long without realising
"caber"
ser soy fui
Those two verbs are the difference between decir and hablar
ah ok
Conjugation of the Russian verb говорить/сказать. English translation: to say, tell. Conjugations in all aspects, past, future, and present tense, command form, and examples. Participle, adverbs, mood, imperfective aspect, and perfective aspect forms.
its just this lists them as the different aspects of eachother
At least in meaning
I think the coolest thing about spanish is "se"
unexpected 😄
To speak is just an imperfect present of say right?
because the verb "to be" totally resembles "am" and "are" xD
"speak" and "say" are imperfective/perfective aspects of eachother
yeah !
and "is"
i think that's a really cool way to think of it
Yup
and it really helps too
oh yeah
to be -- am are is
fjbkdsaf
was
was xD
were
att vara - är
Was comes from a different word than am
Weon vs beon
oh my
I think "se" is pretty cool in spanish like, like in english you say "the water froze" and you just know it was frozen, but I think in Spanish you have to say "el agua se congeló" because if you say "el agua congeló" it sounds like the water froze SOMETHING, right?
Old English had preterite infinitives as well
ohhhh right
and also the indirect vs direct object (accusative vs genitive)
it's like
"i told him (it)"
i really can't follow this 😄
aaaa sorry
se = self
So "el agua se congeló" would mean something like "the water self-froze"
(sorta...)
or "i told it ()"
The construction of “se congeló” is passive
yeah
see english doesn't really have a thing like reflexive so it branches out your mind to learn these things
and you'd think swedish is easy, but there's weak and strong conjugations, and the strong ones are making a return ://
also there's passive conjugations
English does too have a reflexive
han springer -- han springs
I know but it's different to spanish
English has strong and weak conjugations as well
and certainly less common
the water froze itself
reflex verbs exist in english too
yeah but they're different to spanish
like dormirse
In English reflexives are implied for the most part
i think it's just that in this case we drop the "itself" though really it should be there
to sleep oneself
I think a lot of english verbs are losing their irregular conjugations
Sadly
i be
like "learned" instead of "learnt", "dived" instead of "dove"
I squoze the sponge
hmm i hope
I even hear people say "slided" now instead of "slid"
SQUOZE
SQUOUZE
hanged hung?
that too
Those are different words @gusty ermine
wait no
ringed rang
XD
I sometimes like
make verbs irregular when they're not
yeah, hanged hung are important to distinguish 😄
great, now there are different past verbs with different meanings
Like I was having a staring contest with my friend and I said "YOU BLUNK"
dab
Colloquially
is that what it means???
XDD
A picture can be hung but a person is hanged
i want indian food
CDBPASFJCÄ
a person can also be hung, but yeah as i said it's something different 😄
me when i want indian food
hung doesnt sound like a word anymore
XD

Aaaaaah que es ruso xD
Bueno, aun así no hubiera sabido que ponía xD
Hmmm
The russian "i" (i dont have the keyboard installed) blends with the o
The и is too close to the о
And the o itself is not very clear either
either
Either*
What game is it porog?
Ether is a substance
Way better
And yeah looks better
yeah, i knew that xD
But is it like, a real substance?
Because i've only seen it named in fiction
It's both a real substance and a fictional substance
Different things
You'd find it either in chemistry books, or in science fiction books/games @ocean otter
Seems like the fictional counterpart of "ether" (wich is éter in spanish) comes from the greek mithology. Interesting.
Thanks for the info samo
Superb
Hmmm
Yep. If you add a little yellow maybe to the bottom right of the O to close it off so that it undoubtedly cannot be confused with a C it would be perfect. But it's good otherwise
The two last letter take a lot of space compared with the first 3
👍
Seems good to me
"ether" is what they used to use for anaesthetic
and it also refers to a now-disproven theory about light and reference frames

- basically the advice is aim for Grade 6. Your essay is too advance for an average internet reader 😃
hmm
Are you planning to write on Medium, tacho?

software architecture or actual architecture
I dabble in the paradigms and software architecture
exploring the design patterns and architectural wisdom that there is to find in functional languages and metalanguages like lisp
and especially their combination
as well as the combination of these and other paradigms, such as our family favorite oop
Actual, but I've dabbled in languages and programming a bit, and in fact make my own scripts to aid me in creating architecture
Well, they're done using a visual scripting language for the most part, but I'm slowly transitioning to typed (while trying not to go too deep into the api of the program I use, as I don't want to get stuck down that rabbit hole)
I always read about new things that come out, and sort of have a basic idea of what exists in the language world (granted, I don't understand most of it, but I try)
Have you ever heard of rebol? It's a language i tried to get into a while ago that promised to be friendly to beginners, and it was in a way. I liked it a lot. It's a really interesting one, they say it's related to lisp, and they have a cool premise and mission. It's a shame it's not used more. There's also one related to it which is still under development called red (redlang if you want to check it out) @torn jewel
I have not heard of it, it indeed looks very lispy according to wiki
Another cool thing about it is it's really light, under 1mb if I remember correctly, which is lighter than any other language I've encountered
And it's cross-platform
Well, to a certain extent, certainly not Java scale cross platform, but it has the potential to be possibly
@stiff maple which source of information do you use to read about new things related to languages and programming?

I found a really useful Chrome Extension to type accents! This is a lifesaver.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/accents-spanish-portugues/laiognlohmgkmlfchcclnjnafgeinnpg
but what if you need to type accents not in google chrome?
@tranquil canopy some of us have laptops
not gonna buy another laptop with Ñ
or a physical keyboard
you have something called an operating system
you can have multiple keyboards
it's extremely simple
switching between keyboards, and it taking away certain key functionality is annoying to me
it takes less than a second to switch
yeah
literally just alt+ shift for me
takes an instant
you don't have to remove one and add the other, then repeat, you can have many
and switch instantly
eh, you have to memorize key mappings and be cautious of typing an accent when you don't want to
looks nicer to me with a popup system, like on mac
it takes a few minutes to get used to..
it's not learning azerty or cyrillic keyboard
on the english international keyboard it is only two buttons...

I'm late to the quesadilla thing but its even worse, think about this; a cheeseburger at least has another thing in it, a burger. Imagine if it was "I'd like a cheese, without cheese". What the duck on a truck is left. Granted, I guess the translation is more like 'I'd like a cheesy weesy / a little cheese, without the cheese" Anyone correct me if my understanding of quesadillas is wrong, and if it is actually an armadillo made of cheese
a cheesy weesy
armadillo is little armored one*
therefore quesadilla is little cheesed one*

Vive en una comunidad donde la mayoría son mormones

@arctic niche se hizo mormon mucho antes de irse. El ya lo era cuando vivia en Argentina
huh
claro no sé, es tu cultura, la que más vas a entender en la vida posiblemente
No. Yo no lo soy. Solo el es mormón jaja
he visto unos cuantos mormones acá
El solo se hizo mormón, años despues se fue y ahora vive alla hace mucho con su familia.
hace poco se me acercaron 2 mormones en la calle
no hablaban muy bien castellano
