Maybe it is an informal one, because I can not find it in [the/-] Cambridge Dictionary.
Corrected sentence: Maybe it is an informal one, because I can not find it in the Cambridge Dictionary.
cuando dijiste "characters", querías decir "carácteres" o "letras"
Letras is a subset of carácteres.

"people who create orthographies for their languages"
(orthography = writing system = sistema de escritura)
traté de hacer una sistema de escritura para mi idioma construida
pero es demasiado complejo
Traté de hacer un sistema de escritura para el idioma que construí.
I finally found it. This is a question in stackexchange.com which I found really interesting, because it was the first time I read that someone was asking how to create characters in order to use them when typing. https://linguistics.stackexchange.com/questions/19640/creating-unicode-characters-for-new-language

@tardy locust lleipi w-what kinda games you thinkin
@torn jewel any game basically 🤷♂️
you mentioned I can make art, I can but I'm not specialized in it, while I could eventually probably make any art I want it would take me forever and I would never have the patience to do it, so as far as game art is concerned I would just go ahead and not count me
plus it would interrupt vital programming time
which would feel like a crime
hMmMmMmM
I somehow developed bad home habits where I haven't been able to code at home at all in the last few years
which in itself was my main problem as I wanted to build a portfolio
but I can program just fine at work
yesterday I finally put in a full programming day at home too though
so maybe that issue is almost over
wow
nice man
maybe that's my issue
I need a workplace
where I can't just randomly join discord watch netflix
there's always just 1 more thing to check
there's some sort of lie our brains keep telling us that we can just keep looking for a few more seconds
I'm aware its a lie and somehow it still works
the other weird thing is
like yesterday, I was programming and checking this stuff, I was able to program fine, so its not like I even need to not program when I'm redditing
its literally just all habitual
I got to look at the same stuff i always do and program at the same time
indeed
I use procrastitracker
to measure my productive hours on certain software
turns out what ends up feeling like 4 hours was actually like 50 minutes
because of all the "multitasking"
hehe
@boreal canyon a qué se debe eso. Yo nunca hable de CSS ¿O me estás compartiendo algo personal?
oops me equivoque de persona sorry
"Kató Lomb (Pécs, February 8, 1909 – Budapest, June 9, 2003) was a Hungarian interpreter, translator and one of the first simultaneous interpreters in the world.[1] Originally she graduated in physics and chemistry, but her interest soon led her to languages. Native in Hungarian, she was able to interpret fluently in nine or ten languages (in four of them even without preparation), and she translated technical literature and read belles-lettres in six languages. She was able to understand journalism in further eleven languages. As she put it, altogether she earned money with sixteen languages (Bulgarian, Chinese, Danish, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Ukrainian). She learned these languages mostly by self-effort, as an autodidact. Her aims to acquire these languages were most of all practical, to satisfy her interest."

acerca de los 3 autos (autolexia, autographia and autologia) me falta el de autographia. Los otros dos me son bastante normales, sobre todo el de autolexia. El de autologia sirve si te vas explicando cosas a vos mismo sobre temas y reconocés donde te falta vocabulario o sentís que lo que pensás no suena muy natural.

wow that's a lot of languages
woah he knew old english?
i thought nobody has ever attempted to become fluent in that
i wonder...
ah CRAP there's an old english language exchange server
look at that
damn that's cool
tolkien invented more languages than many people can even speak! 😄 but if you already know old english middle english, english, old norse, spanish, french, italian, latin, then you pretty much are familiar with norwegian, swedish, danish, dutch by default or with very little effort, still awesome! as i understand it a lot of the mythology in lord of the rings was inspired by old norse and finnic myths, too, so it wasn't only about the languages either

yeah
I joined a while ago but they were mostly joking around
I'm not sure if they still are
I should probably join
Are you gonna join, too, @stiff maple
It looks like they're reading now, I took a look a moment ago
I don't think I'm gonna join now, I just woke up
I'm too timido, but I should probably join nevertheless 😛
Yeah, just do it man, it's fun
it's good for breaking down shyness but, after that, there isn't much value for learners of spanish imo
yeah it's great improving your pronunciation this way especially when you're a beginner
spanish pronunciation rules are fairly simple though. so there's a lot more benefit for learners of english
It's the details that I wanna work on
i'm trying to learn the pronunciation from Spain
which part?
so i still need to work on the s and z
I guess madrileño, I think that's the easiest one
but I don't know much about the accents
It does let you practice your pronunciation, and reading skill in Spanish

@stiff maple what i mean is, spanish pronunciation is simple compared to english. you know when you've pronounced something badly much earlier on in your learning. hence there isn't much benefit reading to spanish speakers than to yourself
no problema puzzle
@shrewd fjord the seseo is the difference between the sounds, right?
seseo is when you only pronounce S
ceceo is only TH (even for S) which isn't common
distinción is as expected
Yeah, that's true, Spanish pronunciation is simpler. I mean it just gives you something to practice on so you're not just reading alone. It's like a conversation but with a set script

So could you fix that?
And make it Learning spanish so people wont get confused?

@gusty ermine The Spanish ''vaya'' sounds like the Afrikaans ''baie'' (many/ a lot) but in the way that white people say it. If a coloured person speaks Afrikaans like a white person his peers look at him differently
Solution to your problem, don't learn Spain Spanish :P
latin americans don't pronounce v as b?
btw i think "colored person" is considered offensive these days, just a heads up, at least in america
Oh, don't worry. that term is socially acceptable in South Africa. In fact, it's the official term for mixed race people here lol
Depends on the region
it's only differentiated in very few isolated places, v is pronounced as b mostly
ok i see
it doesn't really matter tbh
my text book was trying to teach me about exactly how it should be pronounced when it's in words (not in the beginning) , about some special rules for when it comes before e or i or something, but i can't be bothered
it teaches spanish spanish
special rules?
that's a bit too much for such a simple consonant
but i want to learn latin american spanish anyway
just go for b
i've spent years hobby studying spanish and never even realized that v is pronounced like b -.-
i've said viver and its variations so many times the wrong way, it's a little bit difficult to change 😄
If you like linguistics and stuff, there is a difference when it's between vowels (or something). It's the sound between the english b and v but your lips are barely touching.
and the ir conjugations sound so weird with b, and words like invierno
i like linguistics i guess, but i also try to be careful not to be too perfectionistic and lose sight of the actual target
True
i want to understand and be understood in spanish, that's priority 1 through 100
I think we get too caught up on having perfect pronunciation like me
and that sound doesn't follow a rule, it's just b but you let the tongue do what feels most natural for some words
yeah don't overthink it
go for b and let practice do the rest, listen to natives too
Yeah, listening to natives helped me a lot
it's not like going "v" once will stop people from understanding you, they are too similar
actually i'm sometimes even fighting the urge to try too hard to mimic the native dialects, i kind of in a way like the idea of speaking spanish with a swedish accent, swedish accent is "me", so to speak, it's how i truly feel comfortable expressing myself, if that makes sense
I did it. Well not intentionally. For fun I just mimic my favourite youtubers
cool 😄
I get you, accents are really hard, I can't mimic people, not even in my native language. So I try my best at english but I'm not delusional, I'll probably never get my pronunciation closer to that of a native
Getting a good Spanish accent is actually very easy for us as Germanic language speakers (except English and German itself I suppose lel) because our languages posses 95% of the sounds
it's not necessarily about it being hard, it's more that i feel like even if i nail another dialect perfectly, it doesn't feel like it's me speaking, unhindered, truly authentically, there is a little bit of acting involved
right, true, spanish pronouncation isn't hard to me (well, maybe a spaniard would disagree 😄 )
that's true jaleel, I think I'll never get an authentic english accent because of the differences between the languages
Don't give up! :(
or do give up, english with spanish dialect sounds awesome!

But a lot of people worry about how they'll be seen by others. But that's a whole other discussion lol
oh I'm not really trying to get a "perfect" accent
and idc as long as people understand me and I don't sound terribly bad lul
That is true
idk maybe i'm weird, i just really like the sound of accents, i like me a good thick texan accent, or chinese, or indian or russian, etc
I love accents too, unless it's not even trying a bit at getting the sounds close
of course it's got to be understandable
ye
unfortunately i don't really like the swedish accent :/
at least not from the area i'm from in sweden, but what can ya do? 😄
@gusty ermine Can you tell from which Spanish speaking country my accent is from, I'll send you the recording. The weirdest answer i got was that I sound Colombian
i don't think i'd be able to tell, i don't know that much about spanish accents
the spanish spanish accent is very distinctive though, but otherwise no

because of the lisp c for example
Jaleel accent
The jaleel accent along with the jaleel dialect
both z/c have the "lisp"
wait, in latin american too?
No
phew
latin america is all S
and also j is just an h sound, right?
Depends
not the slightly more guttural
on the country
ok
s sounds like a really soft sh in Spain, right?
No

That's ONLY in Galicia
Joder
I'm tired of that stereotype lol
NOT ALL SPANIARDS ARE FROM GALICIA
oh actually i just realized h is the most guttural sound possible, so the spanish j is sometimes made with the back of tongue
it's our culture
wait, what is only in galacia?
I'll allow it
Galicia is the northwest, right?
Yeah
the very northwest
@gusty ermine Yeah, because of the Galician language
i've been reading about regions of Spain, so I can remember some of them
the sh sound
someone has samples of the "normal" not-h j sound, and the galacian version?
if you can parse that lol
puzzle said something else, not related to j
Yeah
they make c/z sound like sh?
no
No, just the S sound
the s sound
oh..
i don't think i've heard that
Do you know who Spain's former governor was?
yeah it's not an actual sh
no
like we do here with ll/y
Rajoy speaks like that
lul
wat?
Lol
you make ll/y sound like sh??
yes
where?
Wow
argentina and uruguay
A Rioplatense accent virgin
sigh it's when i start going down this road that i just start feeling like spanish is TOO BIG
only the y with vowels.... not the one that sounds just like "i"
If I can handle it, anyone can lol. We all have to suffer!
well, it's only one spanish
True
but there are accents and different slangs
is there an equivalence of "BBC English"?
what is that
I never listened to Costa Rican Spanish but Saturday I listened to an interview and I could understand 90% and that's only having been exposed to Spain, Mexican and Porteño Spanish
@gusty ermine Yes
But no one speaks like that in Spain lol
idk, just let's saying something that all the news anchors and trained tv professionals and actors speak, a kind of clean, easily understood version
not really
actors too? no, they all have their accents
news anchors may sound more formal and stress the words more, but the accents are still there
but they kind of tend towards something, right? it sounds a little bit less local than it would if you just put a person off the streets in there
not so much
ok anyway this doesn't matter much, i'll get back to studying now 😄
Bye bye
they also don't have any reason to do that, they are airing for their own country... lol
they just try to speak more clearly and formally, but the accents are there
Yeah, there's no one true Spanish, if that is what you are asking. Each country/region has it's own version of what sounds proper
every Spanish accent
andalucian

(solo es una broma, los andaluces 👀 )
and not that it matters, the language is the same, there is a tv show here for example where there is a spanish lady and the rest are all from here, she still has the accent but talks with anyone and has been in the show for years, you can communicate all the same, you just can tell she's spanish
@gusty ermine This is an example
Momento emitido el martes 14 de agosto de 2018 en Los ángeles de la mañana.
They are all spaniards
The actor is from barcelona, the interviewer is from Arg
shí!
It's awesome. Having the ability to speak Spanish feels like a superpower lol
language is maybe the coolest things all humans do

there are too many symbols lol
@lavish estuary this is way late but yeah El acento costarricense es muy fácil para los principiantes
es muy claro
Try telling me that 6 months ago lol. Every accent was hard for me :(
true
the only one that still really fucks me over is pr
I didn't know any Puerto Ricans before working here
oof, that's me with a lot of accents lol. But even some native Spanish speakers struggle to understand different accents so I don't feel too bad haha
also jaleel ek leer Afrikaans!
rip
That's awesome tho. Why are you learning Afrikaans?
I've been trying to for like five years now lmao but I keep getting distracted. I picked up two other languages in the mean time but Afrikaans eludes me
a close friend of my mom's is from SA and I've got friends from there
it's a nice language
☺️
@gentle rivet oh, I was referencing the one from math though
although I really had the programming bastardization in mind
the monads from haskell in particular, which aren't exactly monads (which I think is where the quote 'Monads are just monoids in the category of endofunctors' comes from, but its been so long that I forget, I don't care as much about the category theory background at this point in time)
oh nvm that quote is the mathematical version of monads
@torn jewel Yeah, I've done some looking into the whole math part of my name, but just being honest, it did come from an anime haha
ahh ok now I get it ahahahaha
¿Alguien quiere competir contra mí en unas entretenidas carreras de tipeo?
No @terse cliff, no soy "Heritage Speaker."
Wait you can use "excita" to mean "excite"? I was always told it meant "turn on" and to use "emocionar" for "excite"
@viscid sable "excited" also stand for "excitado." But in Spanish, "excitado" is commonly used to express that someone feel sexual desire. According to the Longman Dictionary, that meaning (sexual desire) is also included in the definitions of the word "excited."
Regarding Spanish casual conversations, if you are not talking about "sexual desire", then it is recommended that you use "emocionado" rather than "excitado."
yeah
No, I was just exaggerating hahahaaha
Don't worry, I am weird, dark and all the neutral adjectives that you can imagine for weid people
neutral? XD
Neither boasted adjectives nor offensive adjectives.
ahh
Hola, amigos. Well, today I had wisdom teeth surgery, so I’m going on a long, and quite possibly painful, recovery. I might not talk here because of this; I hope you understand.
Wish me luck.
Yeah I feel ya, I got fillings last week and my teeth still ache like hell at random intervals because of it :/
Suerte con la cirugía, que te vaya bien
oh boy, I remember having that
shouldn't be too painful
I remember I thought mine would be way worse than it was
Gracias, amigos. Yeah, the procedure was not as bad as I thought, it´s just the recovery that will be the big bother.
hmm yeah, I haven't even had my wisdom teeth yet I just hope they come through fine
were yours impacted at all okaru?
and yea meme for lots of people they just come in normally
Impacted? Not sure what that means. I can tell you that my top wisdom teeth came through fine, because I had two teeth removed for braces and such.
Oh, in that case, yeah. The area got infected because of that.
oof doesn't sound like fun
I had that too
why can't we just be born with wisdom teeth 😦
Got to remove 2 last year
Nah, not fun at all. Luckily, they didn’t bother me that much up to the surgery
oofff
I had 2 impacted but no infections luckily
Just some swelling up on the 2nd and 3rd days
and they took out all 4
So yeah that's where it got infected
@viscid sable I don’t know why we don’t grow wisdom teeth right off the bat. Maybe it’s an evolutionary thing?
mmm I think it's so we chew meat better
I think I might have helped bring on the infection by trying to investigate with my fingers 😄
vegetarians triggered
What's a greenbean
maybe
That seems about right, but I feel like it ended up like the appendix: a tool in our body useful for one thing, but just slowly died off.
The teeth, I mean.
uh I looked up runner bean and I got this
it's different kinda I think
anyway
hmm yeah maybe @glossy scroll
I wonder what I should do now? I may ask Spanish questions later.
hmm maybe look up words to do with teeth and surgery and dentists and stuff so you can explain what happened to you in Spanish, that is if you don't know them already

@copper fox ||Ahí miré el capítulo 8 de Twin Peaks, que locura. Justo había visto la película antes de comenzar la segunda temporada de la serie y sabía que Leland era el asesino. Lo que no sabía era que estaba poseído, y no entendí como es que Sarah Palmer aparece en el piso casi muriéndose y al otro episodio está lo más bien.
||
recuerdas esta escena del final de episodio 7?
cuando estan en ese bar
donde Julee Cruise está cantando?
"It is happening again"
jaja, ese calvo da un poco de miedo
vale, esa es una escena muy rara o_o
sí, me pareció bastante perturbadora jajaj
a partir de episodio 8, se empeoran un poco los episodios
en mi opinion
bueno, no solo un poco, peroo..
ojala te gusten
y entonces la tercera temporada...
no puedo explicarlo
la cosa mas rara que jamas he visto

voy a ponerme al día
sabías que no quisieron revelar quien mató a Laura Palmer?
o sea los productors
ah vale, cuidate!
lol
pero toda la serie está basado en eso D:
te imaginás mirando 3 temporadas y nunca enterarte
jaja
Pero yo pienso que sería mejor si nunca lo revelaron

hola
Hola
pueden decirme la razón de usando el subjunctivo. No lo entiendo
Neither do I :/

@nova dust
gracias
*should I focus on re-enforcing what I already know or learn new vocabs?
@lavish estuary ^
A bit of both if you can. Just start out with watching or reading about stuff that's relevant to you or your trip.

I haven't!
I really enjoyed it
I'll add it to my stack of stuff to read
It’s an easier read than the Chernow, so it’s a nice light read
I like her writing style too. It really brings the subjects to life
nice nice
chernow is a little dense but hamilton wrote a metric crapload of stuff so it makes sense
and the style is good
eliza's book next
thanks!
I’m really enjoying Chernow’s bio, I found it used at a bookstore. It’s nice to own it so I can take my time and leave sticky notes in it.
I'm also reading the "hamiltome" as I go, which is interesting
it's the book about the development of the play and discussions they had with historians and authors about how to adapt the book (as well as music related things too) definitely recommend it if you like the musical
I love the musical. I’ve always liked history, but Hamilton rekindled that and got me back into it. I’ll have to check that out

Easiest language that doesn't use the Latin alphabet?
Hmmmm
There is uh
I guess something like Greek maybe?
i do my mating calls in hieroglyphs
I don't know from experience, but I hear Korean phonetics are easier to learn that it appears
Korean phonetics are easier
You think its a safe ride
Easy reading, easy pronounciation
Then the grammar comes along
And knocks you off of your butt so hard
Ah, is that right?
tempted to learn Chinese without the characters
Yes
Korean has different speech levels (formal, polite, impolite, like 4 more), measure words (cup of tea, servings of apples)
Different sentence structure (I am John --> I John am)
Don't forget markers yayyyyy
Topic marker
Subject marker
Object marker
Topic marker and subject marker are extremely similar so have fun on that
Koreans like to shorten sentwnces and rely heavily on context so have fun with that
Oh yeah, I've heard that they like to abbreviate stuff and it can be confusing
Little loan words compared to spanish or french so have fun with that
never wanted to learn korean anyway haha
doesn’t sound particularly appealing when spoken
It takes probably 10+ years of hard studying to become fluent
And they somewhat still use Kanja, which is Korean Kanji/Chinese letters
activating self destruct sequence
Korean sounds really cool

Hangul is supposed to be quite easy.
mhm it is
doesn't korean have an honorifics system like japanese?
honorific sounds like Ned Flanders trying to complement the language
well that's just honorific neighborino
i'm creating a language with someone, are there any other sounds we should possibly add back in or does this look fine?
swedish sj-sound
no
we've already discussed that r will only be used for words borrowed from other languages
so no
but make it pronounced like french r when it is
also uhhhh
yeah that's the oine
aspirated consonants
add aspirated consonants for all of them
and nasal i

Hola amigos. So, I just wanted to say that I think I’m in need of a change of pace. I did want to learn Spanish for 2019, but as a language fan, I end up getting bored by sticking with a single language for too long. That’s why I decided to try and change my attention to another language; a language that I loved when I first studied it: Mandarin Chinese. There are just many different factors into this, such as culture and media.
As such, I’m probably going to hang out on the Chinese-English Exchange Discord more often for springtime. I’m still keeping Spanish on my resume, but I just wanted a change to prevent boredom. I hope you understand.
Keep in mind that I’ll still be in the Spanish-English Exchange Discord for advice and to check on the community.
I don’t use Discord as much as I want to, anyway.
Good luck mate, Chinese is difficult :0
Thanks. I know it can be difficult, but in some cases, it’s actually easier than Spanish IMO. Yes, there are symbols and tones, but the grammar is quite simple. As in no genders, no pronoun-verb conjugations, no articles, and other things I probably forgot about. Plus, with the symbols, Chinese feels like a huge art project, which I’m all in for.
^preach that. Exact reason I quit Italian and switched to Chinese. Plus mando/canto is way more useful to learn for me than Italian since there are more Chinese around me (due to the fact I live in Sydney, Australia) than there is Italian.
I’m from the U.S. There may be more Spanish speakers than Chinese speakers here, but since I don’t really travel much, my secondary language would have either been French or Mandarin, and I couldn’t be happier with Mandarin. Even though my will to learn is starting to decline.
Why is it starting to decline? What do you mean?
Well, my will to learn is declining because of boredom. I’m pretty much mostly self-taught, so I don’t have any actual classes to keep me motivated.
I am good.
And you?
@abstract scaffold You did Italian for a bit? Cool, I'm doing it right now, but I'm only in year one. Did you used to be on the Unofficial Official Duolingo server? Your name seems familiar.
Would anyone be willing to help me? I do not speak Spanish, but I need to undergo surgery in Spain (it is a type of surgery that is not performed in my country and the nearest country where it's performed is Spain). I would like to contact the surgeon via email and schedule an appointment. I will be travelling to Spain by car. What do you advise me to do?
@still radish yo te puedo invitar queso un día que vengas a la luna.
gracias amigo

Estic molt bé aquí, utilitzant el traductor de Google.
@stiff maple do you do any effort to immerse yourself in a given langusge?
To a certain extent, yeah

it was basically pushed for political reasons, and i'd say it has been pretty successful, and it's a good word to have so i'm glad
Is Spanish popular in Sweden? I've met a decent amount of Swedes outside of this server that are learning it.
yes
in sweden everybody learn english, then as third language you typically get to choose: spanish, german or french
ah right
and of those spanish is most popular
My brother’s gf learnt Spanish in Sweden
woah
i think it has the reputation of being the easiest
My brain read that as "sexiest" for a split second
my parents learned french and german in school in sweden
haha! you wish! 😄
personally

Swedish actually sounds like a really nice language to me
thanks
no i think spanish does have a sexy reputation and nice flow to it honestly! 😄
lol yeah
ok, so what did you say about 4 genders?
oh huh?
oh whoops i meant 3
masculine feminine and neuter
ah yes
but masculine turned into other, feminine disappeared, and neuter stayed apparently
but there's still a dialect in finland that has masculine and feminine for every word
interesting
i think they say masculine and feminine blended together and became the en-words, basically
Swedish is descended from Old Norse. Compared to its progenitor, Swedish grammar is much less characterized by inflection. Modern Swedish has two genders and no longer conjugates verbs based on person or number. Its nouns have lost the morphological distinction between nomina...
yeah
swedish scares me 🏃
I think danish scares me more
it should
Swedish once had three genders—masculine, feminine and neuter. Though traces of the three-gender system still exist in archaic expressions and certain dialects, masculine and feminine nouns have today merged into the common gender.
but it still survives a little bit to this day, some nouns you can choose to end with -e or -a (kind of like in spanish with -o and -a) and expressions like "she is 2" (about time, because clock was feminine)
it's like a swede choking on food
do you understand a lot of it?
well...
not spoken
but written for me
if they're trying hard i can understand quite well
norwegian on the other hand is easier
it's easier to understand spoken and a little harder to understand written
I remember pewdiepie saying in an episode of 👏 book review recently that he read a book by a danish guy, and he tried reading it in danish but it was too hard
i was at a family dinner where people spoke swedish and danish to each other without much problem, but that was a lot because people were used to that sort of stuff
yeah
the first time i actually heard danish was watching some short film
and i thought it was some like, some slavic language or something
lool
when i was a kid i got lost in denmark and people tried to help me and i couldn't understand a word they were saying
because it sounds like a mix of old english and a drunk middle aged man from the north of england
oooF
i tried to tell them to spit out the potato but they wouldn't listen
I remember as a kid going about france demanding all the other kids in the playground to speak english
XDDDDDD
well not demanding as such
but if they spoke to me then ye
I was such a tourist dab
meme, you're from spain?
nah england
ah
yeah, not everyone added a country
Icelandic is interesting to me
but if they did u can know doing that xd
I think the most interesting for me though is Faroese purely because it's a Scandinavian language common in a region owned by Great Britain
icelandic is funny because i think there's a real possibility that even though its a descendant of old norse it's actually harder to learn for a sweden than spanish is
i like faroese
i wanna learn faroese
and icelandic
shit, i wouldn't even mind moving to iceland
it's expensive there i heard
my spanish teacher last year loves iceland
and always talked about how they work so hard because it's so expensive, but good
I'd move to Andorra or something if I was rich
the us seems cool but admittedly I wouldn't like to live there either
i am but i live in the us
