Basically, emacs is a text editor but its also more like an operating system, where you can write mostly any app for it and extend it in any way, and play with the code of the program itself while its running, and combine things in any way you want (which in itself is one of the really powerful features, because everytime you add a feature, you can sort of combine it and use it with every other feature you have. Instead of adding features, its like they multiply). BUT ANYWAYS that's just background info

I was gonna say, one of the killer apps, one of the greatest extensions / plugins / modes for emacs, is called org mode

and its a powerful organization / note taking app, capable of doing just about anything, and is probably the only of its kind

depending on what you mean by 'its kind'

when I usually hear about non programmers using emacs, its for org mode

When a simple feature like 'search for action' is implemented, suddenly the entire program can be simplified and shoe horned to fit the exact form defined by this feature, without cutting out part of the program

With org mode I would get to , say, write a table in plain text, but it would automatically format it and apply logic to it so that it would be as if I had inserted a table programatically like you would in excel or word

then I press tab, this automatically happens

I just start typing and

I press tab and it just fixes everything

I' just typing in text, this is just a text file like word

but it knows I want a table and keeps it looking like a table

and I can add automatic programming to it like you would an excel sheet (and that programming is turing complete)

If i want to add a dividing line, I can press alt->down to move a row down

Often in something like word, you can, say, add a table and it won't be text, it will be a separate thing -- but its nice because it has automatic table logic, the kind you want, and a table look. With org mode, and with emacs in general, you get to add this different thing with this different logic, but it ALSO simultaenously remains text as well, and can be treated either as the table, or just as text, keeping both of the benefits and none of the drawbacks

Often we make the decision of 'do I freestyle and take notes, thereby getting to write ANYTHING but not getting any logic applied to it, or do I use some sort of program with some sort of structure, thereby getting .. structure, and automatic logic, but with no flexibility'

in this way, you get to just write notes, freestyle, but it will automatically still bring it to life if you want to treat it more like an app, and interact with it in that structured way, and you can define any new way of structuring or analyzing something, or introducing some new structure

the creation of it can be seamlessly integrated into you just freestyle-writing notes, writing text, and the updating of it likewise

@torn jewel I understand what you are talking about. I would call it (the fact that it knows you are working with a table) an automatic snippet. It knows that it is a table so each time you want a new row, it writes the necessary characters in order that the table format remains.

I highly recommend downloading this plugin for Windows Media Player. As soon as you play a song, the plugin searches the lyrics of the song on the Internet and then it displays the lyrics in Windows Media Player. Once you have played a song and its lyrics has been downloaded, you can play the music again and the lyrics will be saved on your computer.

I have been using this plugin for almost 1 year and it is useful considering the fact that without it I would have to search the lyrics of each song.
