Genki I = N5
Genki II = N4
Tobira = N3
for N2 and N1 there are a few different books people like to pick from. Those 3 until N3 seem to be pretty standard though.
I would avoid Minna No Nihongo unless you have a teacher, it can be difficult to get into if you are completely new to self study and Japanese.
The Sou Matome Series is a good secondary book to have for their exercises.

@grizzled hedge the only thing you need for many countries, in Asia at least, is a diploma of some sort. It doesn't even have to be a specific one granted you're from an english speaking country.
