As an example, in my school: https://sc.edu/about/offices_and_divisions/undergraduate_admissions/requirements/for_freshmen/ap_ib_credits/
I got credit for two classes (HIST 111 and 112) because of my AP US History score
I got credit for two classes (MATH 141 and 142) because of my AP Calculus score
I got credit for one class (HIST 101) because of my AP Euro History score
I got credit for one class (ENGL 101) because of my AP English score

That was 6 classes; overall this was basically a semester and a half of classes I got to skip, and the credit allowed me to retain my scholarship despite missing a semester to work full time and save money for an apartment (AND it also allowed me to take a few semesters with less classes when I needed to I believe). These AP credits are not recognized by every school, but most I've looked at accept them.

For the AP exam, a 3 is supposed mean a student is considered "qualified", a 4 well qualified and a 5 exceptionally qualified, maybe even near damned perfect. Likewise, most colleges I've looked at minus the ivy leagues reflected this by allowing a 3 to recieve credit for a class, and a 4 or sometimes 5 represent receiving credit a class and its more-detailed 'sequel' class (such as in my example with US history and Calculus). I have reason to believe that most colleges would likewise reflect that, but I can't really say without some data, although the first link I could find on the matter (https://www.usnews.com/high-schools/blogs/high-school-notes/articles/2017-07-10/4-facts-about-ap-ib-test-scores-for-parents) at least said "Generally, students need at least a 3 on AP exams to try to receive college credit, says Williamson."
