Essentials is open source, free and more widely supported since it's been around since before sliced bread

cmi and essentials are just different plugins, use whichever you like
cmi is basically maintained by a single person, is closed source, and uses NMS i think so its more likely to break in general, especially version to version
essentials is maintained by a bunch of people in the community, is open source, and generally sticks to using supported bukkit API methods so it doesn't tend to break as much
those are the main differences afaik
i think a lot of the reason CMI has "more stuff" is because he doesn't worry about things breaking

if you want to check for gamemode, remove literally all the perms from yourself and try running it when you don't have the perm, if the plugin is any good it will show you what specific perm you're missing
