i grew up on quake and spent a good 13 years or so playing it almost nonstop lol, quake 1-3
but this style of the game isn't really around anymore and i'm super happy to see it done again and done well. doom 2016 did decently but it didnt fully capture it to me
but, dare i say, so far dusk has even topped quake for me as my favorite fps and im usually super critical about games

mhm, this is also a more minor complaint but i didnt enjoy the interruption of action with the cutscenes. that was one thing that really held it back from properly capturing retro fps to me
dusk still tells a story, it just doesnt hand it to you
doom 16 has the right amount of modern and retro but dusk just goes full retro
the story in dusk is very vague and tells it through the levels

my friend got himself/i a copy as like a late christmas thing
i knew the name dusk, but i'd not really looked into it or knew anything about it
my friend basically told me i'd probably like this since i love quake so much
i went in open minded but i didnt have much that i expected because i didnt know what i was in for
and i was hooked pretty much from the menu with that fantastic soundtrack
then when i got in-game and felt the controls and everything, it just all felt right

my only concern is that it is/will be a bit niche
as much as i hate to say it, arena shooters are pretty much a dead genre
the best chance are titans like doom and quake, but even then, neither of them (in multiplayer) are holding up well. doom 2016 did have a large following for its admittedly fantastic campaign, but i think thats partially because the game did have quite a bit of modernization

I'm still debating with myself how to handle sliding yet, because I'm not a big fan of how Dusk's crouchslide don't let you carry your momentum over
but a slide like there's on QC might make players absolutely too speedy
I was thinking about making the sliding simply add to the player's acceleration
so they'd need to do proper strafing usage to get all the speed out of it

i think transferring your player momentum into and through the slide would be good
i'm not sure how much speed that would add but i'm gonna be pro-speed really
i think adding the ability to get more speed in more ways is great and can increase the skill ceiling

I can see people abusing the sliding to get some absolutely absurd speeds
its a mod tho so idk why I'm overthinking this before even implementing it
probably only like two people will ever touch it regardless
i think a softcap would be interesting
so like, just as example numbers because i dont know the actual units per second and stuff that this game has
lets say you set a softcap to 500 units per second
after 500 units per second, you can still gain speed but at a substantially worse rate, i.e 1/8 of what you'd normally be getting
that would still allow you to get more and more momentum if you can truly keep your flow going
well, both air friction (which is currently none) and the way the physics work are softcaps by themselves

i knew it was a softcap in quake. unsure of how quake champions works though because i simply didnt invest a lot of time in it, so stuff like sliding i'm not entirely sure how it works
i guess the best way would be to look at what quakes doing wrong that makes it almost an exploit
maybe keep the speed caps as it is, but a cap on how much you can get with a certain action? like, you can only gain X UPS through sliding and after that it stops giving you additional speed
so i guess like
a per-action momentum gain cap
you can only gain 500 ups from strafe jumping, 100 from sliding, so on and so forth

have quite a bit of time on quake, and am stoked to play this after work. quick question about movement though - from what ive watched it doesn't look like CPMA or regular strafe jumping because the mouse doesn't seem to play any part in the accel.. is that true? just the a+w / d+w?
yeah, the strafe jumping is pretty easy
yeah, there's a small bunnyhop speed counter in Dusk
but johnny here is working on a quake style movement mod 
whenever you hit jump and you press W+A you gain bunnyhop speed
the movement is very simple to be as accessible as possible
so its like regular strafe jumping but without a mouse req, sounds chill
also you have like
but we got a pro movement mod idea in the works

since Dusk is like, the speed you're moving is basically a bunch of speeds + bhopspeed*wishdir
wishdir being the direction you're holding
i think the accessible movement is actually a good thing
i LOVED quake's difficult strafe jumping
but i think this might be better because it allows more people to be able to do it
which generally increases the speed of the game
so you basically just rotate the velocity vector instantly
yeah lowering the skill floor for AFPS is a good idea, people are already turned off when i show them other AFPS
this sounds like a nice little intro
Dusk is a great intro to arena shooters, you have the basic ideas, but none of the complex movetech
ye hence why it's so simple to do in dusk
also an amazing single player experience that helps you get up to speed with the game's mechanics
the movement doesnt have that complexity
yet it kinda emulates it
such as the simplified strafe jumping
overall i think it does a great job at capturing the arena shooter feel
so the air control is still that same a+w/d+w but with mouse turning? no need to get rid of "w" because its not like cpma?

csgo has prolly the best anti-cheat system in any game to date tbh

you really can't overstate how many people are iterating over new ideas on csgo hacking

it has basically a supercomputer that watches games, detects cheats and submits them to overwatch where the community then determines if people are cheating
according to mcdonald it has like an 85-95% accuracy
so i think one of the issues is that vacnet has is that its reliant on the community
the community doesnt wanna watch games, they wanna play the game
and that, i believe, is where a lot of cheaters run rampant. there are not enough people watching these overwatch cases that are detected cheaters, but not by the fully automated VAC
hacking kind of puts me off MP fps in general
fps is the most hacker infested genre out there

there's an entire industry on bot development in Tibia
that feeds into a gold industry

you can delete them manually, but yes, we'll probably be adding an in game deletion option
i end up having to deactivate steam cloud because it downloads the saves again after i delete them lol
also i just bugged the game ended up having 51 shotgun ammo lol dunno how i managed that
@hybrid condor you can re enable steam cloud and just delete the saves while the game is running, then close the game, and it will sync the deleted files

but there's no SDK available yet, so any mods are using unofficial channels and will need to be recoded once the proper SDK drops

in terms of using mods or making mods
in terms of using, there`s a readme containing general info- the files are on the release area
Download the latest version from the Releases, extract it into your "Dusk\" folder
Open the "Patcher\" directory, run the "DuskModPatcher.exe" file.
Copy any desired mod files (".dll" assemblies) into the "mods\" directory
Have Fun!
ie, if you want to use stickies, then you need to download the stickies.dll from the releases and add it into the mods\ folder
do reed by warning tho, if you cherish your saves, back them up
if you downloaded a folder with "master" you downloaded the sources
not the binaries
ok so i extracted and placed all the stuff
you want DuskMod.dll to be side by side with Dusk.exe
now you run the patcher executable from the patcher folder
in case you want to remove mods, you just need to Verify Cache on steam
if you just want to remove a singular one, delete its dll from mods\
i dont see a DuskMod.dll
in my files there is no duskmod.dll
