@vast tangle going to Yahar'Gul before the moon ritual you can hear people chanting in the "One Reborn" -Boss area. I reckon that's where the surviving Yharnam citizens are. It's pretty devastating when you go there after "Rom, The Vacuous Spider" to learn that the ritual went all into hell and you see statues of people trying to escape whatever happened in the One Reborn courtyard -room.

we also had to cut the "kill the intruder" text out of the leatherneck background, which killed me inside. Original version is in the announcement though if people want to use it as a wallpaper. I'll probably add it to goodies too at some point

the existence of ragdolls in the game still has remnants
when an enemy dies, they don't actually enter a death animation
they spawn another object that handles that
in the code, this object is referred to as a "ragdoll"

I think almost half of the ep2 levels ended up being completely redone, all for the better. Some day it might be fun to release the ep2 levels that got cut (including a way WAY less effective version of E2M2. Basically the same schtick but the leadup was pathetic)
Some of that was because doing those levels helped me get better at level design, some of it was that I was rushing to try and finish the game. I believe around that time was when I learned Rachael was pregnant and I was panicking about the prospect of having no money, trying to raise a child, AND trying to finish Dusk.
Thankfully things worked out :)

Anyways I heard old E2MS was neat
At one point much earlier I was planning on using the E3 2016 demo level as E2MS, which gives you an idea of the level of quality we're talking. The E2MS after that was better but it was a patchwork quilt that didn't really work as a whole. The best part of it can be seen in the final E2MS (the room through the yellow key door)

It took awhile for Dusk dev workflow to find the right equilibrium between Dave and I
Because for several years my whole approach was to brute force short games quickly, and when Dave and I (read: Dave :P) decided to expand Dusk beyond what I intended I didn't quite know how to deal with that.
To get some perspective, I believe at this point Dusk has taken longer than my previous 4 games combined
It's definitely been worth it, the extra time really shows

I mean... at this point, with the skills I have now, I would probably make Dusk a shorter game. Go for the original idea of 12 longer levels. But I think all of the dev time was needed to get to where I am now

I mean if we're talking the FULL "how I would have done it" I think basically the entire episode would be different. Also all the textures. And animations.
But at some point as the creator it's like... you've lost the ability to see whether a thing is good or bad and you can ruin it by trying to go back and improve it
Look at the Original Trilogy updates, or look at how many people still swear by the original Blade Runner Director's Cut
at some point it's like... this is what the thing is, and you have to stop trying to update it to keep it relevant to you, the creator
because you've given it to people and it's not fair to take that from them and change it
but also Ep1 probably needs some more set dressing in some places ;)
Final Cut for Blade Runner all day... but yeah I totally agree. Have to stop messing with it at a certain point. It is what it is and what you've learned would be better spent on the next project. I go through the same thing with music. I believe Bob Ross says to "Quit fiddlin' with it."

E1M7 uncut is definitely something I was planning to do.
A bonus "classic" collection of the unrefined versions of E1 seems like a good compromise of some kind.
I actually think E1M6 accomplishes what it's supposed to pretty well. I could see one or two more secrets maybe, but it's supposed to be a claustrophobic uncomfortable map, to prep you for the action in E1M7

@prisma halo I dunno there's not much in old e1m7 of value that isn't in final e1m7. Basically just the hay bale field, and everything had more space between it
E1M2 is my favorite level.

Maybe have the key to the blue key shack in the forest, and have the blue key only open the underground doors after the well
E1M2 will always be my favorite level in DUSK...
