here's what I'm guessing
a dig for something or another stumbled across the ruins of an ancient city
crews started vanishing, so the military was called in
they went in, fought their way through, and hauled back ancient texts, which were given to esther labs to decipher
esther discovered schematics for machines that could bring prosperity and decided to use the outback town of Dusk for their experiments with the machine, buying out an old facility that had long since stopped working to build the machines in
however, things escalated.
they STARTED with livestock.
using their blood and bones to fuel the machines.
specifically, the thresher.
but then a voice whispered to them that their tributes, while valuable, were not enough.
they needed the blood and bones of men.
so they started instigating a religion within the town of dusk.
the local church opposed the religion of course, but once the miracles possible with the machines were made clear, well, the priests were driven out of town.
the ones who weren't killed anyway.
and thus the religion revolving around the thresher and the deity who designed it began in earnest.
they began to find ways to create teleportation devices, using the machines to fuel them.

its a game called scepter thats about an explorer woman accidentally mining through to and falling into an ancient underground city that's full of human-like beings that are infected by a virus that causes crystal growths on their bodies and puts them under the influence of an unknown, extremely hostile being
she eventually discovers a scepter and as she works her way through finds that the scepter is incomplete but when complete is EXCEEDINGLY powerful
so she decides to find the source of the infection and stop it before it spreads to the world above
the gimmick of it is
well, have you ever played bloodborne? cause if so, youll know about its trick weapons
trick weapons have two forms you can switch between at will, and so does every weapon in the game besides the scepter, the basic pistol you start with, and your melee weapon, a pickaxe
you have a chaingun that transforms into a rocket launcher, an assault rifle that becomes a sniper rifle, a super shotgun that becomes a piercing crossbow, etc.

Movement is stiff, and enemies are simply not responsive to fight. It's like I'm shooting a brick wall rather than actual enemies from how poorly the enemies react to being shot. I also really dislike the setting, Quake 1 had an excellent gothic horror atmosphere to it which this game unfortunately abandons for some alien thingamabob plot and results in a far less interesting game world. Unfortunately, for what is supposed to the successor to the legacy of Quake, I cannot in any way recommend this due to its blatant mechanical and game world inferiority,
So yeah, there's everything I have to say about Quake 2. Dusk is pretty good GODDAMN AMAZING so buy that maybe.โ
