ok, so thing is, yeah part of why ep2 is better than ep1 is that I've gotten better as a level designer. But also, part of it is that Dusk is going to be a game with 33 levels. You can't start at 10 from moment one and just continue at 10 throughout. There has to be an ebb and flow. Like, everyone loves Escher Labs, but it wouldn't have nearly the effect it does if it was preceded by 15 similarly subervise levels.

Episode 1 had to set the atmosphere, get people used to the controls and gameplay, make sure everyone understands the oldschool schtick if they're coming in never having played Doom, etc. Episode 2 is where I could start playing with things.

Mama is also probs the hardest boss in the game IMO purely because I suck at void levels involving precise jumping. The gaurdian was just a matter of constant circlestrafing easy once you teleport back to the main room.
