I think the only time where a specific upgrade was actually just so overpowered it made it so using other weapons felt discouraged was siege mode on the railgun

I find the mortar useful in the way the same way the base shotgun or nailgun in quake are useful. it's just a lower tiered riveter that you can use if you don't have a riveter, or your riveter is out of ammo.
