The original concept was that underground magic-whatever ruins were discovered in the area where Dusk takes place (was always northwest PA), and research facilities were built to study them. The evil magic-whatever that infested the ruins combined with a Chernobyl-like meltdown of the facilities, making the whole area basically a hellhole of evil magic and STALKER stuff, left to rot and stew for many years. Your character was originally a treasure hunter entering the exclusion zone to find treasure (gold, gems, etc, which is why those are your morale pickups) that he heard was hidden in the ruins and brought up for research.
Originally there was nothing about cults or anything like that

That's something that will be addressed as the mod tools come online, know that we will have plans for sv_pure X functions to ensure players can have a vanilla experience (if they want it).
