duskworld beta is supposed to roll out during this week right
Yeah, we've got a small group now. Everyone will get in eventually though
we'll be sending out invites as time goes on
for a frame of reference, its about 10 people
the proper beta, no. as i've mentioned a good few times the current launch window for the first wave of invites is set somewhere towards the end of the month
How do Dusk's destructible walls work? Can you set any brush to be destructible?

@jaunty meteor "brushes" in the same sense as they exist in Quake maps do not currently exist in Dusk itself
but as far as the SDK goes, that's likely how it'll work
Dusk's maps (in the main game itself) are made in ProBuilder, it has a similar concept of a brush but it works a little differently

I imagine there'll be something like func_destructible
and you can specify damage type, health, etc for the brush using that

Btw, Unity level design is not based around BSPs, unlike Quake levels. Although, in my Unity game, we are developing our own version of the BSP format for side-loading, to accomodate for moddability. @jaunty meteor @prisma halo

I'm actually not a fan of CSGO's HRTF. It's not very good at pinpointing height, unlike the custom HRTF tables for OpenAL Soft. You shoot a grenade off a ledge in YamagiQuake2, you can hear it bounce and explode under your feet.

anyway, pain elementals are the bomb
they create gameplay dynamics and force you to mix things up every time they show up, now you have to punch through, you can no longer take out the horde at your leisure
I like the idea behind Pain Elementals, but they have a bit too much health, and 3 lost souls on death is really annoying
You can prevent the lost souls from spawning entirely if you run right up to the pain elemental as it dies
it tries to spawn the lost souls but you're in the way so they all die instantly

i figured this out by accident as my preferred mode of killing things is, run through them as the SSG vaporized them

To find every face of an object, and the light data pertaining to that face
- Load BSP map in editor
- Programmatically bake lightmaps
- Read lightmap data and save it in the same form as regular lightmaps
And you need to do that with everything in the scene
lightmaps themselves are a simple concept
they're basically a texture overlay
it's generating them that's hard
way beyond my current skillset (hence relying mostly on quake tools π )

I unironically think Quake E4 is the best Quake 1 episode. Doomworld would freak if they ever heard someone say that, though.
I actually haven't tried quake ep4 yet
because there's a recurring pattern with level design in older episodic id games
they spend most of their efforts on the first one, and they only really bother learning their lessons in the last episode
E4M1 is by Willits IIRC, the rest is all Petersen. Similar map design to Doom 2 midgame, but with complete darkness and some complex scripting for the time.

It was glorious. I adored it. Can't wait for episodes 2 and 3.
Also that little surprise after the experiment boss fight. That was cheeky. I love it.

If you land after a bunnyhop, you retain some momentum. If you slide and cancel it really quickly, though, it completely shits up your momentum and feels awkward.
I really don't slide as much as I should because it breaks the flow of BHopping so much.
I only ever slide when fighting scarecrows
I do too, but then it gets me killed during Endless Mode when that sombitch's pellets just happen to veer down and right.
