Hey, do you guys have any ideas about how long the Single-player will be? I understand there will be 33 levels, do you guys know how long the average player will complete an episode?

depends a lot on the type of player you are
assume you take maybe 15 minutes to explore a level
thats about 2.5 hours an episode
granted, it depends on how much you explore
you could take 30+ minutes on a level looking around if you wanted
or you could speed run it in 2 minutes
I dunno, I wasn't sure how much playtesting you guy had done and if you kept track of the average time. Guess it is a bit of a silly question.

I remember seeing in trailers the player going upside down and doing a bunch of flippy fun stuff, but I don't see much of it in game play I look at. Is it like things such as rocket jumping and bunny hopping in other games where you have to master it, or how exactly does it work?

God, I am so excited for duskworld. I played through the quake 1 campaign, but since I jumped onto it so late, I never really got to experience the multi-player action, the servers were mostly empty and not the best. I know there are some more modern retro arena type shooters, but Dusk is looking like it'll be the best, or at least my favorite.

There aren't actually that many overt references planned to other FPS. Mostly subtle influences. Dusk is supposed to be its own game more than a collection of references.
but that said... influences from classic FPS are all over in the design and levels

So @thorn trout I saw the recent gggmanlives video and feel compelled to ask if the ultra violence difficulty equivalent is going to be made any harder, I mostly ask this because I really am hoping the game is a legitimate challenge without having to resort to the sadism of duskmare

So you should be able to mod in C# as well

you can incredibly easily make malicious mods when you use C# assemblies for game code

with a Squirrel target also planned down the line
It's constantly evolving though, so nothing I say is set in stone until release

Compromises had to be made, unfortunately, but they won't affect what you can do
just how you do them
Will you need testers / qa people who have some experience with Unity / editors / programming in the future to help contribute documentation or anything like that for the editor? Probably already have a bunch.
It's likely that small sections of the SDK will be made public some time after episode 1's release, in the form of a patch
for the purpose of testing on a wider scale

the events block allows you to subscribe Lua functions to various game events

The difference between each call to OnTick is always the same
One "tick", which is 1/50 of a second

It's similar to Doom, where Tick() is called every 35th of a second
I've never modded older games, tbh. Only experience is unity and UE4, which I'm learning now. My C++ is fine, but UE is... it's overwhelming.

I spent a few hours today rigging up a recursive visual data structure with Actors in UE, and just some of the simple things made me growl impatiently. Like, the way you set up your material bindings there is very clean in comparison to loading a mesh in UE lol.

I wonder how changes in the next Unity version might change some things for the better, assuming the entire game gets rebuilt for that. I read they are removing UnityScript, adding a Job system for multithreading and giving cleaner access to object lifetimes. But that could be a big jump.
I guess they determined that a very, very small portion of Unity developers are using their custom JS, and they want to drop the support there because it's holding them back.

and while in its early stages, we will likely continue down the road with unity asset bundle as the primary avenue, we definitely have done a good bit of exploring native bsp support, and will likely further investigate depending on time, interest, and the relative success of dusk

but youll have to do a conversion process with the tools we provide
but in the future we want to get rid of the conversion middle step

just a quick question, will DUSK have support for 144hz screens? what I mean by this is that there's a common thing with unity games regarding micro stuttering when moving, but everything else (animations and such are fine). Will DUSK rid of this?

== DUSK & DUSK SDK (DAWN) INFORMATION DUMP ==
- Dusk is developed entirely in Unity, although you could easily mistake it for the Quake engine.
- TrenchBroom is the "officially" supported mapping tool, but that doesn't mean others won't receive support or testing.
- Custom scripting (enemies, weapons, game modes, etc) will be ready long before custom levels will be, and will likely have some form of public testing phase.
- The SDK will contain various tools to aid with mod creation, but none are necessary if you enjoy developing raw (maps and shaders are exempt from this).
- Scripting involves a custom definition language along with Lua for behaviour control, and potentially Squirrel as an alternative option down the line.
- Custom levels are currently in the form of asset bundles, which a BSP must be converted to within Unity. There are technical reasons behind this, but there are plans to remove this limitation and allow loading BSPs directly.
- The official game data formats are IQM (models), PNG (textures), flac (audio), however they are not the only ones you can use.
- You are able to load Quake 3 MD3 models, and potentially Quake 1 MDL models down the line. However, this feature is not officially supported, so don't expect it to be flawless.
- Yes, there will be a console. Yes, mods can make use of it.
- An .fgd and a .wad will be provided for use in Quake mapping tools.
