it started out as a wave survival thing inspired by stuff like Crimsonland. i love that type of shit. but i was a little dissatisfied with that so im trying to turn it into a semi-linear shooter with a "classic fps" styled approach to level design. no random gen, enemies and weapons with specific purposes, secrets, etc.

@thorn trout so im wondering what kind of enemy designs you had in mind for dusk and what their purposes are

i'm coming up with a design doc for my game and i have some enemy concepts so far. area denial enemies, maybe physically or just with strong melee damage. cannonfodder enemies so you're always killing something and not everything is a high health tank. lots of projectile based enemies to keep the player moving

hmm let's see... honestly I started out thinking about roles like that--hitscanners, projectile enemies, bigger baddies, etc--but at this point I've gone more in the direction of trying to make the designs and behavior interesting and unique rather than trying to fill specific roles, if that makes sense

@toxic wadi rightly so! They just slowed gameplay down and weren't any fun to fight

@mild ginkgo they worked on SS for awhile iirc so they had a lot of time to refine the gameplay

and in terms of the whole "dance of death" arena combat philosophy, I think it's basically unmatched

#

It doesn't have the same visceral thrill as some other similar games (like Painkiller) but the core gameplay design is nearly perfect

Yeah it sounds like you're exactly where I was when I started Dusk. For what it's worth I've found that it's not QUITE as fragile as it sounds. You can mess with enemy placement without destroying too much, provided the stuff that affects the flow/feel of combat is robust enough

#

I think it's more important to just focus on having variety in placement/layout than it is to try to puzzle out exactly what each enemy position will do to combat

#

not that I'm an expert either of course

which kept doubling until i ran into problems that prevented me from getting much further.

the difference between that strat and the optimized one is that you go from killing one soldier, one leatherneck, and one scarecrow to two soldiers, one leatherneck, and two scarecrows if you get it right

and depending on how fast you did that sequence depends on where the AI paths from there.

sometimes you can do it too quick and eat a couple shots if you're not aware of it.
