the reason it died when it was buy to play was due to marketing from 2K, balancing issues, slow to patch, and general incompetence
the reason it died the second time
was because of more balance issues and they put their focus into making joke content
instead of retooling and rereleasing the old content
so the default game had 12 maps which is a good amount of maps
the f2p release had 4.
instead of fixing those old maps up to go along with the major overhauls
they decided 'you know whats a good idea? if we make a map where the players can go get speed buffs, or damage buffs, or defense buffs, etc.'
i straight up went into their official discord and yelled at them saying 'you're going to fucking kill your game again. if you dumbshits really give a fuck about evolve then you'll stop producing joke content people play once and never again then release the old maps and stop fucking around'
4 months later 2K shuts em down. right after they release a monster variant thats OP as fuck and last update was another joke map.
evolve legit was, and still is one of my favorite games.

I mean, it's one of my favorite games of all time... but I do think it's important to go in with reasonable expectations. It's janky and in some ways it's underbaked, but imo both of those things are part of what makes it special

@feral solar SoC needs modded to be stable. Some argue that it's more fun with "missing" content added, but I don't necessarily agree. The vanilla experience is something really odd and unique. "Improvement" mods usually take away from that. CS also needs modded to be stable. I think it's probably fine to go with CS Complete. Like I said it's the awkward entry in the series, and I don't think you really miss too much if you go for some improvements. CoP is stable and fully featured out of the box, so I wouldn't suggest any mods, unless you need something for resolution or something like that.
