i have a theory that this happened as a way to deal with content overproduction. its like an arms race between production and consumption: as production got easier, the internet was flooded with a glut of content, so consumption had to get faster to compensate, otherwise it would be too hard to get seen and no one would make content. then once consumption gets fast, production has to get even faster to maintain the constant feed of content

it's a factor, not for everyone but the pandemic sure spiked activity in both sides (Viewers, Streamers)

like, if it takes (very rough estimate) 10 minutes to make a meme and 10 seconds to read it, it takes the same amount of time to make a meme as it takes to read 60 memes -- by 60 different people, possibly.

on the other hand, if you stream for 10 minutes, it also takes 10 minutes to watch that stream. this 1:1 ratio means that, given the same amount of time, one person can pay attention to much fewer streamers compared to meme makers.

as such, everyone can make memes, and still reasonably expect to get a lot of attention per person. a much much much smaller ratio of people can stream and still expect to be seen.

but everyone wants to be a streamer. twitch encourages it too, as streamer accounts are no different from regular accounts. this is a problem: people already complain that it's very hard for small or new streamers to be discovered. they usually blame the algorithm, but for the reason i gave i think the problem is inherent to streaming.
