#getting input lag and lagging in general whenever i play online
70 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
i also changed the MTU and DNS as the same as my wlan on the LAN so idk if that improved anything
But what is your NAT type?
Also, your MTU/DNS settings is restricted by your router already if you set it up like that.
That's just like repeating the setting the router already has, so no need.
Since it's online, of course there is a delay always. But is it really bad?
still at b
Well...
its not that bad definetly noticeably which sucks and makes the game a bit harder but i dont lag or get disconnected anymore
so if i get it to nat type a will it give me less input delay
ill give it a shot
Good luck
is there anything i can do to fix input lag whenever i play online games such as smash bros i own a switch oled and i wanna know if using it with ethernet will make a difference
Wireless or wired (attached joycon) controller?
You can test input delay in System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Input test. Or you can use a mock match in Smash.
If you think there is no delay for the controllers then go to System Settings
Internet > Do a connection test and tell me the result.
i play on a pro controller and do you think doing a connection test will make a difference if its handheld or docked
Ah no. I told you to do 2 tests, didn't I? Have you done them?
They have different purpose.
The first test is to test the delay of the wireless connection between your controller and the console.
The 2nd test is for your internet connection.
ok ill do them right now
Since it's Smash, it might be affected by this nifty things called NAT type but let's wait till I get the test results first.
Btw if you play offline, do you feel the delay?
do i go on test input devices
yep
no delay on my contrl
no
everything runs smooth when i play offline
I see, do the connection test next then
its only when i play online i start lagging and my attacks are delayed
Tell me the download/upload speed and NAT type.
nat type is b
Decent but not the best
Not bad, it's ok
i also changed dns setting if that does anything
Have you ever get this type of error saying there's a an issue connecting to other consoles?
i dont think so
the worst thing that has happened is that i got disconnected from a game when playing online
but i never got an error message i believe
I think this is similar but anyway... read on below
NAT TYPES & ONLINE MULTIPLAYER
※ Many Nintendo first party games use peer-to-peer connection in online multiplayer, this is affected by Network Address Translation (NAT) - a function of the router. NAT type rank from A > B > C, from best to worse.
You can check your NAT type by System Settings ⚙️ > Internet > Test Connection.
To improve your NAT type, you can setup DMZ (demilitarized zone) or Port-forwarding on your router. It does require certain networking knowledge to do so. Below are Nintendo's guides:
・ How to place a Nintendo Switch console into a router's DMZ.
・ How to Set Up a Router's Port Forwarding for a Nintendo Switch Console - Open all ports, essentially the same with DMZ.
○ Note: Sometime you cannot improve your NAT type by these methods This is due to your ISP's config. In this case, give your ISP a call.
Now after you have read this, let's move onto the main question about using an ethernet adapter
yea
Yes, you can get NAT type A and better internet connection with an ethernet adapter.
But a few caveats
You need to buy specific ethernet adapter for it to work.
The NAT type may not change if your router or ISP has some restrictions on it.
At the very least, a wired connection is always better than a wireless connection.
Will it solve your issue? Maybe, but we have to try to know.
For buying an ethernet adapter, check below
COMPATIBLE ETHERNET LAN ADAPTERS
※ Only ethernet adapters using AX88179 chipset will be compatible with the Nintendo Switch console. The list below are adapters that have been tested and confirmed to be working.
• Recommended adapters:
・ Hori Official Nintendo Licensed LAN Adapter - $29.99
・ Nintendo Official Switch/WiiU/Wii LAN Adapter - Hard to find.
・ Bionik Giganet Adapter USB 3.0 to Wired Ethernet - $24.99
・ UGREEN USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Network Adapter - $15.99
・ AmazonBasics USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter - $17.49
・ Plugable USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet LAN Network Adapter - $16.95
・ StarTech USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet NIC Network Adapter - $19.99
○ Note:
・ The upcoming Nintendo Switch OLED model will include a LAN port in the dock. You can buy this dock separately.
・ LAN adapter works better with the USB port on the back of your dock.
・ You can use an USB-A to USB-C adapter for handheld/tabletop mode.
・ LAN adapters may make the Switch slightly heat up in sleep mode. You can get rid of this by turning off the always connect setting in System Settings > Sleep Mode > Maintain Internet Connection in Sleep Mode.
Now, if you buy one of these and plugged it in to find NAT type still don't change to A
then refer to the earlier tag that has DMZ guide.
sure
It requires some networking knowledge to setup, you can ask someone or a technician from your ISP to help
That should be it, then. Take your time to muse over these, quite a lot of details. If you still questions, feel free to ask here again.
can i skip this step if its too complicated
Up to you. But if it didn't work, you know why.
ok thanks for your help
👍
oh yea one last question in internet settings there is this thing called MTU and its set at 1500 and i heard that if you change it to 1400 it will improve your internet connection or something?? but im not so sure
It's the size of each data package going through your network. And each region has a different one that may work for them. You can try 1400, 1500 or 1700.
oh alright ill try them out and do a connection test to see which one works the best
