The clear tape is there because it thickens up the rail and makes the connection less wobbly
My switch is so old, I need to get a new one

I think it's a faulty ribbon cable in the rail.
Tried board swapping, same issue. Cleaned several times, same issue. There's a little bump in the ribbon cable that seems like it would be the problem. Giving up, just gonna buy a different brand ig.
