Persona 5 Royal is my favourite

For the Switch? You've got two strong options (soon to be four) on the virtual consoles in Paper Mario. Golden Sun (soon), Fire Emblem 7 (soon), and EarthBound. Persona 5, Dragon Quest 11, Chained Echoes, and Persona 4 all have a 90+ metacritic, and any one of them will knock it out of the park in its own way.

Everything @plain pewter said but I would add star ocean, sea of stars (almost out), persona 3, shin megami tensei v, Octopath traveler 2 or 1, xenoblade series, ni no kuni, the legend of heroes trails from zero, atelier series, Tokyo mirage sessions fe, ys 8, neo world ends with you, any Final Fantasy game, NieR automata and fire emblem series

Octopath 2 is extremely solid if you have nostalgia for the design of the 90s. It's inferior in story, but the heart and mechanics are there. Live a Live, too.

FE: Three Houses is an 89. It's almost a masterpiece. Almost.

Ehh I think the phrase “masterpiece” is really general. Metacritic is only 1 review source, I don’t personally enjoy many Metacritic masterpieces lol.

persona 5 for gameplay
shin megami tensei v if you dont care about lots of story (story is still very good)
persona 3 for very good story
persona 4 for a cute story
fe engage is good
Valkaria chronicles is good and super cheap
Monster hunter rise is great
monster hunter genarations is super cheap version of rise

For it's the Xenoblade games. Really good stories, characters, music, and gameplay. The combat systems aren't for everyone, as they have that MMO-inspired design, but there's some depth there, and I love spending time in the menus managing my party.

For combat, I love Shin Megami Tensei V the most. The press turn system is incredible, and SMT V introduced some cool mechanics.

And more broadly speaking, if we mean any Japanese role-playing game, and any system, I really like Elden Ring and Nier Automata a lot too.
