JOY-CON LOCK REPLACEMENT
§ The Joy-con is attached to the Switch's rail via a locking mechanism, often called locks.
• Due to the modular nature of the Joy-con, it's normal to have a degree of "play" movement on the rail, even when they are brand new.
• Since the locks are made of plastic, they will wear out through usage, leading to even looser attachment and even unintended disconnection. You can replace the locks by yourself or through a repair service.

※ Note: This might fall into the free Joy-con repair. Ask Nintendo's customer support for confirmation.
• Using a thin piece of paper/cardboard between the rails can force a stiffer attachment, but it might lead to faster wear on the locks.
• You can reduce the wear of the locks by pressing the lock button on the Joy-con deeply every time you pull it out as well as when you slide it on.

There are 2 options to choose from: Plastic locks similar to the original ones or metal locks that are more durable.

hmm. I can't see anything wrong with the parts based on the photos. Does the release button on the joy-con spring in and out when you press it?

since you just purchased it a week ago, your easiest option is to go back to the retailer, say your Switch is defective, and exchange it for a new one
@fervent egret one more thing I want to check: you've got the joy-con grip that came with the Switch, right?
try sliding the joy-cons into and out of the grip
see if they are still loose

you should push it in all the way
maybe you have a defective rail on your console
regardless, i would exchange it for a new one

which store did you buy it from?
every retailer i know of lets you exchange defective products within the first 14-30 days
