It happens alot over time
It usually happens when your outside in the heat
It depends on how long youve had that console
Ye it happened to mine alot because it was really hot outside
It can hapoen to switch lites aswell
Yeah that makes sense
Once its older it gets hot sometimes, not sure why maybe someone else could answer why but all i know is its bormal
All good
The Switch does have a feature to shut itself down when it reaches a dangerous temperature level. It will display an overheat error with a thermometer icon before that happens. Normally, when that happens, it means the console is having some issues venting heat.
Check below for some info about how the fan works.
VENTILATION & FAN
§ The Switch vents its internal heat by sucking air in from the intake vent on the back, and then blow out by the fan on the top vent. While the console is on the dock, air intake go through a channel under the cable cover. Airflow chart.
■ Good practices for ventilation
• The ambient temperature around the console should be kept at 5 to 35C.
• Keep the vents clear for better airflow.
• Do regular cleaning on the vents with a squeeze blower or compressed air can.
• Turn off the Switch when you have to store in enclosed space for a while.
■ Signs of concern
• The fan is making abnormal, grinding noises. It may be broken or has worn out and need to be replaced.
※ Note: The Switch fan can be surprisingly loud. It can get around 30-35 dB, but that is normal.
• The Switch showed an overheat error and shutdown (SoC reached 67°C). This is a safety feature to protect the components from reaching dangerous temperature threshold. Your Switch may have issue venting the heat.
■ Solution
You can open up the Switch to clean the fan internally, but putting in a new fan is the best solution. It is something you need to do eventually, and it's one way to "refresh" the life-cycle of the console.

• You should also consider replacing thermal paste, or use 1mm thermal pads for easier application.
And the temp limit of when it does shut down
If you put your ears to the top vent, you can hear the fan moving
normally it's a smooth woooosh sound
The grinding is like when you grind 2 gears together but the teeth don't match
but it differs from case to case
Sometime it's so loud it will make you think the Switch is shredding paper or something
Do make sure to keep the vents clear
Every time I see a Switch laying on the bed with its back stuffed with bedding stuffs, I feel sad
