Remember this being done with Animal crossing new horizons release too..Least I think..
Certainly deservers an upvote from my side.
We did on the subreddit but not here in the Discord. That being said, swapping the Discord banner for major releases is an idea that was proposed relatively recently that we want to start doing moving forward! Frequent icon changes are less likely just because that can confuse people who are used to looking for a specific thing and their muscle memory. Never say never, we obviously do make exceptions for things like Pride, but most likely banners only for game releases.
One of my to-do items is to update our design template for our banners to try and identify safe areas across the various platforms (web, iOS, Android, etc) so we know what will get covered up by UI elements (such as the Partner badge, "Public" tag, etc) and can design accordingly with those in mind.
Here's the template we use for subreddit banners to help explain what I'm talking about
Green is always safe, yellow/orange area get trimmed at certain screen sizes, and magenta are areas where the UI overlaps.
This is getting way too into the weeds for what you asked, but suffice to say, we like the idea! Just need to do a little groundwork internally first.
(Profile backgrounds, likely yes. Possibly tied to Trivia. Channel renames, likely no due to similar confusion reasons. If we did it'd probably just be one or two.)
Yeah, we did for Kirby, that was our first go at doing that
