Any Help Appreciated!

(Skip If You Want) Hello, woke up with some issues today. I wont bore you much with my background, but short story, I decided to play Smash Bros today, and went into my drawer and pulled out my switch (Still plugged in might I add) but to my surprise nothing was turning on only a black screen.

I attempted to hold power button for 20 seconds, plus the button tap, but the only thing that pops up is the NINTENDO logo, then just goes back to the back screen. I've tried everything I could find online, and I apologize if the solution is obvious.

More Info:
Disconnected JoyCons, Switch has been charging for around 13 hours, tried both Mac Charger and official AC adapter, clean port.

Is it on while in the drawer?

#

And how long has it been inactive in there?

unreal vault
#

Sorry, I wouldve explained further

solid rune
#

No problem, if anything I'd prefer to have a lengthy detailed report

unreal vault
#

It wasnt in a drawer, but thought it would save time. Was sitting in our living room, inside the... TV adapter case? (idk the name sorry)

#

Was connected to the TV, and was plugged into the wall

solid rune
#

It's called a dock

unreal vault
#

Yeah sorry

solid rune
#

I see

#

No worry about that

#

So it was charging on the dock the whole time, I see

#

When was the last time it was working normally?

unreal vault
#

Im not sure, its been a long time since I turned it on, maybe 5 months?

solid rune
#

Turned it on? When you take it out of the dock, it wasn't on?

#

I meant...

unreal vault
#

It was not on im fairly certain

#

But something that may help

solid rune
#

Let me explain like this: The Switch would turn itself on automatically when it's connected to a power source, or on dock.

#

So if you have to turn it on, then something was wrong.

unreal vault
#

Oh ok

solid rune
#

Alright, assuming this a power failure issue, maybe battery, let's do a few things

unreal vault
#

It looks to me like someone put it to sleep, but then stopped working

HOW TO RESET AC ADAPTER

If your console has issue with charging, no power or other power issue:

1. Unplug the AC adapter from the wall sockets and other devices.
2. Wait 30 seconds.
3. Plug the AC adapter back into the wall socket then back to the device you want to charge.

solid rune
#

Do this first

unreal vault
#

Yes I did this

solid rune
#

And then plug the AC adapter directly onto the Switch

#

Do it again if you can, but follow the exact order I told you

#

When it's connected to the Switch again, Wait for about 5 mins then do this thing below.

15s

METHOD TO FIX BOOT ISSUE

If you are experiencing boot issue, your Switch won't turn on, etc.. try this:

  • Make sure the Switch is plugged in directly to the AC adapter.
  • Hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • At exactly the 15th second, lift your finger briefly then press down once to turn the Switch on.
solid rune
#

If this didn't work, let it sit there like that to charge, don't touch it. At least 6-12 hours, overnight.

#

And when you get back to it again, try the 15s method again.

unreal vault
#

The thing is, if it wasnt charging, then wouldnt it not show the NINTENDO Word at all?

solid rune
#

Even if it's charging, sometime it's too "dead" to even show anything

#

That Nintendo logo is just the boot screen

#

But it seems to fail the boot process, maybe due to the battery or some power management issue.

#

or something else

#

We don't know that yet

unreal vault
#

Oh ok

solid rune
#

But at the very least, it can start the booting process, you don't have a "brick" case yet.

#

Try it and let me know the result of the first 15s attempt

#

If that didn't work, then keep it charging overnight like that. And make sure the vents are clear.

#

Top and back side vent

#

Lay it on a flat surface with joycon attached will do.

#

Since the joycon can prop up the tablet, letting the back's vent clear of obstruction.

unreal vault
#

I added a video in case this changes anything (which I’m sure it doesn’t) just making sure it’s clear :)

solid rune
#

Gj, I wish people who's asking for help are all that throughout lol

#

Alright, let it sitting there charging for a while

#

After that do the 15s trick again

unreal vault
#

Oki, I will check up when I wake up tmrw

solid rune
#

If that didn't work, then you have to send it into repair, unfortunately.

#

There are way too many reasons for this to happen, so I can't just guess why.

unreal vault
#

Alright thank you so much for the help :)

solid rune
#

At least it's in the process of booting

#

In case you want to do repair, check the guideline below

HARDWARE REPAIR INFORMATION

Please click on the links below to read more about hardware repair options.

[👉 Nintendo Repair Service](#986637761916317707 message)
Nintendo offers their own repair service for free within warranty period and with cost when warranty has expired. Joycon's repair are often free, regardless of warranty. Their service is often more reliable, with original replacement parts, but is more expensive.

[👉 Independent Repair Service](#986637761916317707 message)
A local, independent repair service may offer faster return time, cheaper and doesn't need warranty nor official support. Although finding a good local repair service needs some effort.

[👉 DIY Repair](#986637761916317707 message)
Requires skills, tools and experience, but DIY repair is always an option.

#

And if you want, you can tell me your general location, I can also ask around to find a repair store.

#

Otherwise, use the links in the guide.

#

That's all, good luck 👋

unreal vault
#

Thank you :)

There has shown no sign of difference this morning unfortunately, planning on taking it in for repair. Thanks for the help though

init

HOW TO INITIALIZE WITHOUT DELETING SAVE DATA

§ Initialization is a semi-format solution that will wipe all the data on your Switch, except for save data, screenshots, and your user account information, then restore the system software back to its original state. It will help eliminating software issues.

※ Note: This process will delete all games' install data and pictures/videos stored on your microSD card, since it will format your card . Your save data will be safe. You can backup or move the data around in System Setting ⚙️ > Data Management.
⚠︎ Exception: Animal Crossing: New Horizon's save data will be lost through this process. Please backup or transfer your ACNH's save data before attempting this.

1. Ensure the console is power off.

If the console does not respond, hold down the POWER Button for twelve seconds to force it to shut down.
2. With the console powered off, press and hold down the Volume up (+) and Volume down (-) buttons, then press the POWER Button to turn the system on.
Keep holding down the Volume buttons until the menu for Maintenance Mode appears.
---Stop here if you just want to access Maintenance/Recovery mode---

3. Once in Maintenance Mode, select Initialize Console Without Deleting Save Data.

If a Parental Control PIN has been set for the system, you will be prompted to enter it to proceed.
4. Read through the information, then select Next > Initialize Console Without Deleting Save Data.

stop at step 2

#

Tell me if you can or not

unreal vault
#

I cannot

#

I found some examples of other people having the same issue on reddit & YouTube, but nobody has found a direct solution

#

Im planning on simply replacing the battery, and getting a new AC Adapter

#

Sorry this is horrendously confusing

#

Sorry, going to retype

#

When I plugged in my USB C headphones to test if the AC adapter was working, there was no sign of charge onto the headphones. Does that mean the AC Adapter is broken, or does the AC Adapter only work for the switch?

solid rune
#

Although that's still a good test. Maybe it's just the AC adapter being broken.

#

I wish you told me what you intend to do though, if you did that with a laptop, it can go kapoof.

#

Do you happen to have a charger laying around that has Power Delivery support?

#

It should have a PD icon on it.

unreal vault
#

Sorry a little confused, do you have an example or picture of what you mean?

solid rune
#

Power Delivery is a fast charging standard. It's like a method of fast charging in USB-C.

#

It's one of the more popular fast charging standard.

#

The Switch uses it, and you need to find a different charger with that standard to charge it.

#

Since the AC adapter maybe broken here, we need a replacement fast.

#

Hence I have to ask.

unreal vault
#

Ok I dont think I have one sorry

solid rune
#

Ah no worry

#

You have to find one or get a different AC adapter

#

Just FYI, the Power Delivery logo look like this

#

Sometime it's just the PD lettering

unreal vault
#

Ok Thanks

solid rune
#

Pity you don't have a tool to measure the voltage of this AC adapter

#

If you want, you can bring both the AC adapter and the Switch to a repair store

#

They would have a multimeter in a form of a USB adapter to test it.

solid rune
#

Anyway, the possibility of the AC adapter being broken is there. And in fact, is the better possibility.

#

You can just replace it.

#

Good luck with the repair process then, update me later if you want o/

Update: Took it into the repair store today. They quickly tested the port and were able to confirm the USBC is undamaged, and receiving power. They told me they will be able to get it back to me around Wednesday.

#

They have to run diagnostics, and are quite busy hence the amount of time

@unreal vault hold the power button and volume up

unreal vault
#

Ive also tried that

marsh tartan
#

Oh

#

Mine did that once

unreal vault
#

Still no progress.
Its been well over a month now, they've tried replacing the battery, port, motherboard, and still nothing. They have a team in Orlando that we are sending it to as a last resort, but it isn't looking promising. This may just be, the end of the road...

solid rune
#

I wonder if they thought about the eMMC yet
