Vlad Jr. seems to be plateauing as an above average but not elite hitter, with negative baserunning and defensive value. He has 160 games of MVP level player and 400 games as an above average one

#

I'm hoping Vlad can go back to MVP form. And some of his numbers even look more positive this year in terms of contact, but he just cannot seem to put it together offensively for long stretches of time and that's where practically every bit of his value comes from.

His baserunning numbers have been bad every single season. He has terrible defensive value. He doesn't walk at quite an elite enough number to offset his continued power outage. He's probably more valuable than he has been this year but he's also increasingly looking like a 2-3 WAR player.

And that's just like a homeless man's Freddie Freeman. It's certainly less than what's been expected of him, and definitely not worth a super expensive long term extension.

The question I have here is does his offense improve to the point where he's worth the extension he's going to ask for? Or does his baserunning and defense improve to where he's worth hoping on better offensive numbers but settling for his current ones?

#

If things don't significantly improve soon, our front office should be doing what the Orioles did last year

#

The Orioles had a good team last year and were a wild card contender at the deadline, but their front office (correctly) recognized that their roster wasn't good enough to win the World Series. As a result they were sellers at the deadline instead of buyers, trading pending free agent Trey Mancini (arguably their most popular player since Cal Ripken Jr.) and their excellent closer Jorge Lopez for futures.

If our team's overall play hasn't improved significantly by the end of July, our front office should be thinking the exact same thing. The reality right now is that we are the 4th best team in the AL East, which could be enough to get us into the 3rd wild card but not much farther than that. Even if we wanted to be buyers at the deadline, what could we offer? Are we going to part with the few decent prospects we have left for a marginal chance at a title this year? I certainly hope not.

If we're still 4th in the AL East by the deadline, even if we're in "contention" for the 3rd wild card, we should be sellers. We need to accept the reality that 2023 isn't the year and trade our pending free agents to rebuild our depleted prospect pool. Chapman, Kiermaier, Belt, maybe even Merrifield who has another year left. All of those players could contribute to a legitimate contender.

I know it sucks to take a step back when the team's goal going into the season is to be a championship team, but it's time to face reality.

With the A’s looming relocation, Oakland will become the first city to hold a team in each of the 4 major sports leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL) to have lost EVERY one of their teams

#

From 1971-1976, Oakland briefly held a team in each of the four major professional sports leagues simultaneously

#

Those being:

The NFL’s Oakland Raiders (playing at the Oakland Coliseum)

The MLB’s Oakland Athletics (playing at the Oakland Coliseum)

The NBA’s Golden State Warriors (Playing at Oakland Arena)

The NHL’s California Golden Seals (Playing at Oakland Arena)

#

The Golden Seals were the first to move in 1976, going to Cleveland to become the Barons (before shortly thereafter merging with the Minnesota North Stars which are now the Dallas Stars)

The Golden State Warriors retained their name but moved across the bay to San Francisco’s Chase Center

The Raiders moved to LA in 1982, but moved back to Oakland in 1995. The Raiders would then relocate again in 2020 down to Vegas, where they play today.

And then we were left with the A’s. But all signs are now pointing to a Vegas relocation, with little hope of changing that at this point

While other cities have lost their Four Team status, none have gone m Four Teams to None…until Oakland. It really is a tragic state of affairs

#

In 1887 the MLB decided to count walks as hits for that season only

#

In 1887, bases on balls (walks) were counted as hits by the major leagues in existence at the time. This inflated batting averages, with 11 players batting .400 or better, and the experiment was abandoned the following season. Historical statistics for the season were later revised, such that "Bases on balls shall always be treated as neither a time at bat nor a hit for the batter." This results in ambiguity for some players' season and career hits totals, notably with Cap Anson. Anson was credited with a .421 average and the National League batting title in 1887; however, the recalculation of averages with walks excluded lowered his average to .347 and retroactively gave the batting title to Sam Thompson. Additionally Denny Lyons of the Philadelphia Athletics had a 52-game hitting streak, the second-longest in MLB history behind Joe DiMaggio's 56-game streak in 1941. Lyons hit in 52 consecutive games that season, but his streak included two games (#22 and #44) in which his only "hits" were walks. Although Lyons' streak is no longer officially recognized, it still appears on some lists.

#

Shohei Ohtani's hitting like Trout (pre-2023) while also pitching

#

Shohei Ohtani's numbers have always been absurd, but this year he's really been taking it up a notch offensively. .299 average, .987 OPS, and 21 HR is very reminiscent of Trout (albeit the latter not doing that well recently.)

Here's a comparison between Shohei's stats this season and Trout's stats last season (bolded = better):

Ohtani (2023): .299/.377/.610; .987 OPS/166 OPS+; 50 HR/162 (68 GP)

Trout (2022): .283/.369/.630; .999 OPS, 176 OPS+; 54.5 HR/162 (119 GP)

While Trout's season was definitely more slug heavy (.337 ISO compared to Sho's .311 ISO so far this year), while Sho's hitting for a better average, both of their offensive slash lines look eerily similar.

He also has 102 Ks, a 3.32 ERA (131 ERA+) and a 4.2 WAR. The Angels have played 70 games this season, so he's on pace for:

48-49 HR
183 hits
9.7 WAR
236 Ks
The unicorn is not human after all.

#

The Nationals are likely to draft Paul Skenes this upcoming draft, the best pitching prospect since their own Stephen Strasburg

#

Before I get Gerrit Cole comments, Skenes is a better prospect than Cole.

More dominant in college in the tougher conference
Throws a little harder. Skenes is 98-102 while Cole was more 96-100
Better control. Skenes has 188 K, 18 BB in 107 IP this season. Cole had 119 K, 24 BB in 114 IP in 2011.
Strasburg to Skenes would be a fantastic "passing of the torch" for the Nationals. They honestly are good comps too. They both have inverted W concerns. I think Strasburg's fastball and curve grade similarly to Skene's fastball and slider. Strasburg definitely had the better changeup as a prospect though.

All of which brings us back to the Scotts All-Star Game Ballot, where he is currently the active player who has accrued the most Wins Above Replacement without once making an All-Star team -- and, with another strong season or two without that recognition, he’d find himself being one of the three "best" non-decorated position players of the divisional era (since 1969).

The Oakland Athletics hold the record for the longest time spent in a city without ever changing ballparks (56 seasons so far). The previous record was the Browns, who played at Sportsmans Park for all 52 seasons of their tenure in St. Louis.

#

Excluding temporary home-game setups in other cities (i.e. Cashman Field in 1996).

There are older parks, and defunct parks which were used for longer, but none of them were the first or only park used by a team. The A's are one of three current teams who have not changed parks at all in their current city, the others being the 26-year-old Rays and Diamondbacks.

Tristan Beck has set an MLB record by earning 2 saves while his team wins by 14+ runs in a single season. He also ties the record for such games in a career, which is also 2

#

It’s a lesser-known provision in the rules that a pitcher may earn a save by pitching 3+ innings in relief to finish a game—regardless of the margin of victory. Beck pitched 3.1 inning to finish a Giants 15-1 win over the Brewers last month, and 4 shutout innings tonight against the Dodgers.
