Some background: I already own quite a bit of 1-off paints, lots of different brands (Vallejo, Citadel, Sc75, Old AP...). I now want something more like complete range with all the paints behaving similarly.

These 2 seem to be about in my price range. I am not really interested in continuing to buy singles of w/e I happen to need.

Honestly, 6 in one hand, half a dozen in the other. I like Pro Acryl alot but other people like AP more.

Both are great ranges. No wrong answer to be had with either

If you’ve tried a number of the paint brands then you may have developed preferences. I’d go with the one that you like better.

That being said I would never recommend buying a whole paint range - it’s incredibly rare that you will open and use all of the bottles. I typically recommend just buying what you need for your projects as it is far more cost effective than any perceived deal by buying the entire range.

The problem is tradeoffs. To get the paints acting consistently they're adding lots of white or black to pigments. This makes them more consistent individually but makes them mix weird. Actually the higher grade the paint , for example, professional grade artist paints, are very inconsistent, because in many cases they're one pigment. Many of the very vibrant colors are very transparent, and the more muted dull colors are very opaque. So they tell you the transparency right on the bottle.

I agree I'm not buying full ranges but many other friends will sell small boxes or focused on something like skin tones, leather, nmm, etc. You could just buy a small box set at a time as it fits your needs. I have so many pains I don't use though so i don't recommend buying an entire range either.

Depending on your workflow you might prefer mixing your own.

I've been shifting to mixing my own. I don't paint armies so strict uniformity is not an issue, and mixing my own means when I buy a paint, I use it. And I don't need to stock so many paints.

Thanks! Leaning towards just going through the AP fanatic range and picking out whatever I might need/find useful.

Honestly I do not really like the monument bottles, so maybe Ill just decide based on that.

I have a different opinion on paint ranges, I do actually think it's a good idea early on to get a base set with a good selection of colors in it instead of just buying everything ad hoc as you need it

#

Because early on you don't know what you don't know.

#

And having access to a wide range helps you experiment effectively, helps you follow along more closely with guides and tutorials and not just develop preferences but develop informed preferences

#

As others said, the fanatic and pro acryl ranges are both great choices. I personally like pro acryl significantly more than Fanatic, but they'll both do you just fine

I've found that their consistency is more to my liking. They're a little thinner, but not so thin that you can't treat them like any other paint, just thin and flowey in ways that make them easier to control and closer to right out of the bottle.

I also like how pigment rich they are, they thin down well, they airbrush well, and they have excellent color offerings

#

They dry matte mostly, but tbh I varnish my minis with ultra matte when I'm done so that's irrelevant to me

#

They also barely seem to separate at all in storage, and they come with mixing balls

#

They're just kind of perfect imo and they take care of a lot of things that newer painters might not know to think about.

The color offerings are a big deal their box and signature sets are really good, especially as someone without a decade or so of "color sense" under their belt

#

None of this is to bash fanatic range, they're also really good. I just think PA is better. And I also think box and signature sets are a good decision and PA has the best ones imo

Neither for sure. For one thing you haven't tested either.

Neither Fanatics nor Pro Acryl are universally loved. Seems foolish to buy in big if it turns out you're one of many people who dislike these brands.

Will is also right on the money - in a large set there's bound to be a couple colors you already have and some you'll never use. This completely offsets the savings of buying a set.

I'm not sure on your motivation to do this in any case. Do you really not like any of the paint brands that you have? What problem are you trying to solve?

Not really. I mean some of my paints that I own I absolutely love. But I find it annoying that I have to change my process alot depending on which colors I want to use.

Id say I like VMC the most by far (how they handle)
They are very consistent, but their reds and oranges are pretty much useless. Id also like some more vibrant colors.

Scale75 has some awesome colors I really enjoy as well, but they are too quirky to be "my main go to". Same with scale f&g which I kinda regret buying. They are too thin and runny. Annoying for layering

Citadel is fine, maybe a bit too satin, but I hate the pots.

I figure both AP fanatic and pro acryl should be decently similar to VMC but more vibrant.
