I’m in USA and access to Molotow is difficult (not even addressing the tariffs)….

I am wondering if I could use varnish + acrylic ink to create a “colored primer” alternative. Or possibly a product like this “clear primer” by folk art (plus ink):

Why aren't you just using a regular primer and painting over it? That's what the primer is there for.

That's 2 steps. A coloured primer combine them.
I've used white primer + inks. I can't see a problem using a clear primer+ inks

I was told on Reddit clear primer + ink is going to be “too transparent and won’t work” but I think I need to test it for myself

It’s not uncommon to see adverse knee jerk reactions to “new ideas”

Like applying ink glazes/washes over white primer before it became slap chop lol

I mean. If you apply a transparent primer with transparent ink, and expect it not to be transparent, you're going to be very disappointed. You can mix inks into a white primer and you'll get opacity, but the color will be washed out due to all the white, and your primer will lose some of it's grip which may or may not be negligible.

Also, applying transparent paint over white is nothing new. It's been around for centuries, contrast paints/slap-chop just popularized it for miniatures.
