Hello everyone !

I have started painting a few years ago and lastly I'm always using Contrast / SpeedPaint / Express. It does work ok, but looking at the wonderful result one can have with classic acrylic or a combination of standard paint and contrast it makes me want to go back to the basics again.

With that in mind, what would be your best learning path to miniature painting ?

Thanks!

This is going to get rambly and preachy. I apologise, and it’s not meant that way.

I’d start off with just acrylics. Without a wet palette. Play around with paint consistency and just focus on painting neat. No overspill, everything painted one color. Do a few minis like that.

Then get a wet palette if you’re clear on paint consistency stuff.

Next up id try to focus on creating depth with shadows. I honestly think this is deceptively hard because washes are a crutch. So just paint shadows and midtone

After that, learn blending with whatever technique that fits with you. Glazing being common one.

After all that and 20 minis+.. at least you got the basics down pat and can go back to speedpaints if that’s more your jam but with a much better grasp on basics and therefore make gooder minis.

And yeah from that point just explore topics one by one. Highlights, shine, ambient colors, texture… etc

Long, sorry. GL:)
