How would I improve highlighting this black armor.

Have u tried white oil paint for highlights? Oil paints don't dry as fast as acrylic paints so u can make highlights without layering. And try to put the mini under the lamp, see where it reflects the light and put your highlights there

Best way to improve black armor if you wanna keep it black is to work with less gray here. Im not entirely sure the goal you're reaching for, but if you're looking for just general "improvement" in highlights is to more careful and bold in NMM or Non-Metallic Metal. NMM is also know as generally one of the hardest type of techniques to apply consistently and accurately. Reference photos would be your best best. I say one more layer of highlights only on the edges to help give it that metallic shine, however you need a steady hand to do edge highlights mainly around the upper half (no need for the legs unless you feel it needs it) otherwise i think the base is badass and the pose too
