Setting up Duels

Duels are an event in which you and at least one other person challenge each other to a duel. You wager points you've earned in the server and paint similar or identical miniatures over the course of 1 to 2 months, once both participants are finished, each person's model is put in a gallery and voted on by the community. Whoever gets the most votes, wins and takes all wagered points from the opponent(s) of the duel.

The purpose of duels is for two people to create their own interesting and dynamic paintjobs or dioramas, while pushing themselves and thinking through their process and explaining it to those who are following the duel, so that all of us can learn and see your thought process on your piece. Friendly trash talking is encouraged.

Rules

Participants must wager a minimum of 5 points, but can wager any amount of points even if only one participant has that many points(more to gain for the users with less points.)

Participants are required to write a post about what they've done so far each week on an Imgur post and spoiler tag it so their opponents can't see it.

A maximum of 2 months is allotted for users to complete their models, less time can be chosen though.

Models chosen must be at least in the same close theme, if not identical miniatures.

For your duel, a thread in ⁠paint-alongs will be created in which you will post your weekly progress updates as you go.

Duels should not have a theme, the point is for each individual to create their own piece, their own way, separate from their opponent, thus the hidden posts so they can't be inspired or influenced by each other's work.

We chose this mini because we wanted something challenging that was also open to a lot of different styles, and bonus that it has no box art nor any examples online of how it has been painted by others either

I agree, it is open for interpretation and at the same time there are a lot of challengin parts with the bust in itself. Will be fun 🙂

My Thought are more towards vampire in a sense... but perhaps not the to traditional. I also usually changes alot after I have started.

btw this is what happens when you have a day off and wake up to early 🙂 you get to post pictures of what you want to do in a duel. I will do my best to defeat Daniel but it will be hard work he is a very good painter. In any case will enjoy this very much and will be my first serious painted figure since some time back (4 years I believe)

Small update on preparation work, Not started to paint yet, need to do it soon thou since I am off for atelast one week vacation in beginning of June. ||I want him to be in a bar that will have different lightsources, also moved the arm from original posture and will put a mobile phone into his hand that also will be a lightsource onto the face. Think I will have 3-4 different light sources (have not done that before, usually just use zenith highlights so a big challenge to get this correct. I have started to take some pictures with different light setup just to get an understanding on what I need to do. Below is one picture I want the white light to come from below and then some colored light from other directions and they are weaker lights. https://imgur.com/8N5fjue||

So some updates on the figure, have started to sketch in some values || So have used the airbrush to get some of the light sources and tried to get shadow placement in an ok way, will need to adjust it a bit manual when I start with skin colors etc. Some shadows needs to be made clearer. But generally i think it will work... @floral spoke Just do it 🙂 it is very fun and for me I try just that little bit harder :), a great way for me to push my skills and inbetween have some less "stressful" painting.

So a small update, some color on the bust || This is very very difficult, the light come from underneath and when you take a picture the light source are generally above so it become hard sine that lamp casts a different shade 🙂 So will need to do much darker shades. I am struggling a bit at the moment ||

Busy with work but a small update. || Struggling with the light from below. have decided to paint more of the surrounding areas to the face and started on one side of the leather jacket to get the values in more correctly to see if that helps me to continue working with the face. https://imgur.com/qfgjg96 ||

I have had so much to do at work since i am going for a week of vacation so it is standing still at the moment. Also hit a wall in a sense with the painting trying new stuff also 🙂 I will try to push some work in today and the coming 2 days.. I so look forward too see what you are doing. I believe you will get there, you are a very good painter. If needed just go back on step and rethink if some things dont work and either redo and try again or skip that effect or vision and make it to something that you feel are more simple. (Unsure what to say have seen what you are doing)

But yes i have hit a wall in the way I am working with the lightsource and it just dont look as good as I want it too do. I might need to rethink how I am approching that issue on my figure. Will give it a last try these week and if it dont work I will go for another solution.

Yeah didn't get time to paint, I believe i would need one more month to be able to finish the figure, just other things got in the way. But perhaps the two last weeks will give me enough time to finish it. We will see.

@copper pollen I have hurt my shoulder and arm and now diagnosed with beginning of frozen shoulder. Have had a real big problem with holding the miniature and sadly feeling it will not be possible for me to finish this figure at the moment. I can sit around 30 min before the paint starts sometimes one hour. Will try and see what I can do until the end of the 13th, but feeling a bit down at the moment, this since the healing period for frozen shoulder are a couple of month and after that one year of specific training to try to get mobility in the shoulder again.

Nah not a draw, you would have won in any case if it is anywhere close to the conan bust you are painting now so good. I haven't looked yet at your version of this bust but yeah it is a challange to paint it.
