Paint a mini or figure representing an actual existing historical faction from any time.

STANDARD HOUSEKEEPING RULES :

You may prep your mini, this includes, gap fill, assemble, purchase and prime ahead of time. Paint should only be applied during the time-frame of the PAL.

Anyone can join in on the fun. Just share your mini first and paint within the time frame. Request your points in the point request channel by following the pinned post on how to ask for points.

You can't submit the same mini for multiple PALs or other multiple events. And units minis can't be split among the different PALS if they are identical .

Have fun and be nice to each other. Share some wips and some laughs.

Oh man. I forgot I said I’d do this. Did we decide that busts still count or are we going straight full figures?

Does the mini for this need to be sculpted specifically as a particular historical figure? I'd like to paint this pirate mini as Captain Diego "el Mulato" Martín. He was an Afro-Cuban pirate captain in the 1600s. He allied himself with the Dutch and lead a prosperous career of vengeance against his Spanish enslavers.

He's a difficult historical figure to get much info on because he wasn't white, and he also liked to go by aliases a lot. Seems he had quite a vengeful streak against the Spanish, but quite a merciful streak when robbing other nationalities.

#

The mini would be during the years after his escape from Havana while working his way up in the pirate world with the Dutch. The chest on his shoulder signifying perhaps an early success.

This is Caribbean pirate so this is OK

I MAY paint this, not sure yet. dry fitting in process.

Hi my friends, I'm going with this one, Agamenón from Art Girona - 54mm, for me an extra challenge, in addition to the theme because it's not fantasy 😅, the size since I really like painting is 28mm. 😃

jovial walrus

# jovial walrus Great looking sculpt, and a cool choice of historical/myth figures. Should be a ...

Yes great sculpt from Adriano Laruccia, my first contact with fantasy was when I was exposed to Greek and Roman mythology as a child, my mother read it to me. I remember as soon as I started reading one of the first books I read during the school holidays was a youth version of the Odyssey, with the return of Ulysses from the Trojan War, this figure is a historical almost fantasy, that way I feel closer to home 🥰

# velvet sonnet White metal mini! My man. What a fancy shield.

I have to motivate myself with this figure and paint the others from the same brand that I have here, I had the opportunity to visit the factory in Girona and see the entire collection, it's difficult to leave without buying and historical ones are not my favorites but the antiquity period has Amazing things! 😍

it's nicely sculpted. 👍

Boudica (Celtic iceni tribe, led (failed) rebelion against the Roman empire in Britain) from Hasslefree. Not a historical figure maker, so probably not fully historically correct stylistically (about half the cloth you would expect 😉 ) Would this still work for this?

Hmmm alternative idea. Now I do not know which one I want to do most. Second idea is way more time consuming even though it is smaller scale. They are incredibly detailed for the scale. And i would have to sculpt part of the diorama. The fencing at the least.

Found these 2 15mm scale medieval lancers on horseback. They are perfect to make a joust tournament scene.

Which one would you people like me to tackle... Boudica or the 15 mm joust diorama?

subtle bridge
ripe moon
# subtle bridge How big is your motivation?

Big enough to tackle either one.
The joust is a more unique project which is motivating in its own right. Boudica is just painting. Both seem fun so no wrong answer. Just cant make my mind up. So a little nudge either way from you guys would be enough to sway me.

subtle bridge
#

Visually the joust scene would look better.

jovial walrus

Allrighty.. joust it is. Sparked creativity... already catching myself brainstorming how to build it so thats promising. And need minor conversions. Both lances are more or less pointed upwards. Want them more forward facing.

With less time than I’d anticipated, I decided to switch up my Historical figure and go with something a bit simpler. Spanish Knight from Elite. Very nice Mike Blank sculpt.

scarlet knot

Advanced a little, adding light.

ripe moon
#

Distracted by the other pals. But made the base for the base. Hopefully some paint on the horses today.

ripe moon
#

Ok change of plan. Little disaster. One of the horses and its knight (not painted yet so no work lost) dropped of the table. And... well I moved my chair back to pick it up... and drove the chairwheel over the duo.

Lets say it does not look pretty for either (converted knight arm had the pinning pin tear through the metal, horse broke two hooves off) I might be able to repair with quite a bit of work/resculpt... but I really do not feel like it, especially at 15mm scale. The other horse/knight is unharmed. So I'll finish that one solo on a small base instead (probably not for this PAL, maybe as a little bonus).

So Boudica is back on the table.

“Tacitus wrote many years after the rebellion, but his father-in-law Gnaeus Julius Agricola was an eyewitness to the events, having served in Britain as a tribune under Suetonius Paulinus during this period.[2]
Cassius Dio began his history of Rome and its empire about 140 years after Boudica's death. Much is lost and his account of Boudica survives only in the epitome of an 11th century Byzantine monk, John Xiphilinus. He provides greater and more lurid detail than Tacitus, but in general his details are often fictitious.[5][6]…
…No contemporary description of Boudica exists. Dio, writing more than a century after her death, provided a detailed description of the Iceni queen (translated in 1925): "In stature she was very tall, in appearance most terrifying, in the glance of her eye most fierce, and her voice was harsh; a great mass of the tawniest hair fell to her hips; around her neck was a large golden necklace; and she wore a tunic of divers colours over which a thick mantle was fastened with a brooch. This was her invariable attire."[14][15][note 2]”

From Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boudica

Boudica or Boudicca (, from Brythonic *boudi 'victory, win' + *-kā 'having' suffix, i.e. 'Victorious Woman', known in Latin chronicles as Boadicea or Boudicea, and in Welsh as Buddug (Welsh pronunciation: [ˈbɨðɨɡ])) was a queen of the ancient British Iceni tribe, who led a failed uprising against the conquering forces of the Roman Empire in AD 6...

Kevin White's sculpture seems quite credible to me, the Celts wore little clothing, it was common for warriors to fight with their chests bare, some people in the region in this period looked more like indigenous people.

#

This is after from Boudicca

ripe moon
#

Think she is cool. Will have fun painting her, the fiery hair and the patterned cloth. So I am not really that bothered that the joust fell through. Would have liked to do both, but I will settle for this 🙂

I offer up for your perusal, my Historical Figure Along mini --

Captain Diego "el Mulato" Martín was a renowned Afro-Cuban pirate captain in the 17th century. Born into Spanish slavery in Cuba, Diego escaped to freedom and embraced a life of piracy. He formed an alliance with the Dutch and went on to lead a successful and vengeful campaign against his former Spanish enslavers, exacting revenge for his past suffering.
