i am using a combination of inks and drybrushes but still not really able to get somthing i’m quite happy with and would love more experienced eyes on it. ty.
#Advise on improving this fire/osl effect?

Hi E.E. ! Hmm, I guess I'd like to try and discuss where to place that OSL color.
I think the following pointed areas should be able to see the flames = should be somewhat impacted by the color:
and I mean, overall, the fire's warm light should hit all surfaces the flames can see (feel free to put your eye vlose to the flame and look at the perspective on the mini from there?) with varied intensity
Got you, thank you, ill try and pull things further around the back, with fire would you keep at this level of orange or more red/yellow? I really should have planned the area around darker to sell it, but i dont want it too overpowering.
looking at the wing, I'd adjust with leaving some blue where the metal isn't directly hit, and also add a little orange on the frame itself, sketched roughly:
I think I'm overall fine with the color? Maybe sliiiiightly redder, not by much. But then it becomes for me more of a matter of how much color to apply. Which takes us to discussing how intense the light from the fire is, how far it reaches, and how you want it to feel in contrast to the overall lighting
so like on the wing I pasted above I'd probably decrease the impact on the color starting sliiiightly at the 6th "step", and almost nothing but the end of steps 8 and further?
to build a "gradient" of intensity, if you will?
I will put some more intense red around the areas closest to the fire, and work on, that, I think thats great advice thank you!¬
Ill post the results soon/
with OSL the trick is often not to overdo it, but it's hard
also it will "sell" once it manages to hit almost everywhere it would in real life. Until then our brains detect something they don't fully accept as light
so don't get discouraged if it takes some more work indeed 😉
I've cheated in the past by using a small flashlight to ease viewing where the OSL can go
Thats a pretty good idea, ive done a few basic osls with an airbrush, but the effect is never quite right.
Arnau Lazaro's FAQ suggests we leave a little darker areas to separate "ambiant" light from OSL light. I'm not sure it's always possible but something to think about?
I have seen that a fair bit, and in the future i want to try somthing in full shadow with multiple light sources to praticse stark effects, but I am just pushing up to that level.
i think it came across much better in the plasma glow, but a much easier placement and being under the model meant this was super simple
I feel like it's more subtle here indeed 👍
is by no means perfect but i think this is serviceable?
For me more saturation does a job in case like that. You can try some fluorescent orange or something 🙂
