#NMM Refining Help

Thanks- still having trouble seeing where these should go, or maybe I’m running out of room
Any better?
Yep the placement looks better tho for the forearm i would not put the max light on the bottom edge but rather in middle like a cylinder. On that edge i would put the dark shadow and then a thin, uneven, rim of edge highlight. Beside that I'd keep blending and "break" the shadow areas with random scratches or dots (not too many unless you want a very ruined armor effect) where you have the space, like on the shoulder pad. After that I'd paint the head-body and then see how to eventually introduce other colors to drive the metal onto, especially if you are going to put this with a backdrop
Thanks, great tips! I’m not sure which forearm bit you are talking about though?
@covert sandal do you mean the forearm raised behind his head?
The front view one@night cosmos
@covert sandal I must be missing something, I thought it was painted in the middle as a cylinder? With the middle being the bit where one plate overlaps the other (and has a little blacklining)
Actually i think you are right, i was viewing it from just one angle of the bigger pics. Still as a rule of thumb that just comes from experience, usually is more visually interesting to have the sculpted edge side darker with just the highlighted rim. I know that's not 100% real life accurate, but sometimes in painting this kind of "likely" expedients work 🙂
Thanks that’s a really good tip to keep in mind. I’d follow it here but that bit is one of the few bits I’m fairly happy with some I’m wary of redoing it. I’m less happy with the shoulder and the vambrace (bits behind his head)
I know you aren't asking me but the back isn't too blue? Your background painting suggests a rather yellow one. Or you just plan to add it in the next step?
The back of the armour you mean?
My highlights are with ice yellow, maybe i need to get more warm tones in?
which brand of paints are you using? btw what you've got there is not bad at all, at this point i would focus on blending your layers a bit more. You can have mix of glaze and stipple for example and also i would make your max light less of straight hard line and a bit more uneven
A mix of s75 and vallejo
Like what we discussed, nmm reflects the environment. Your mid tones suggests for me that the environment is very blue or metal itself is blueish.
Don't get me wrong, it's looking cool just wondering about how it will fit a very warm background
ok i was curious just in case you were using KK, white can be tricky to deal with. With the colors you are using you should't have too much of an hard time feathering out the hard line, tho a bit of medium like Jo Sonja Magic Mix can make it easier. Also, forgot to say, you might want to have the biceps area generaly darker with a narrow light, it should help selling the effect more and empasizing the forearm area
I continue to dig myself into a hole
What is this mediu doing? Any similar product from other brands?
Fairly happy with the front but its still messier than i want
unfortunately can't answer to the second question. as for the first it basically makes the paint more transparent and easier to work the transitions with. It's very effective with highgly pigmented paints that can be very covering and difficult to blend without leaving hard lines
looking good, also remember camera eye is more unforgiving than the human one 😉
Lets be honest though, after done most of the time its seen will be in photos
Is this too much texture?
to some extent that's true but i like to bring my stuff to live competitions whenever i have the chance!
Also thanks again for taking the time to give feedback
no, but id made the bottom light narrower, it should be a secondary reflection, so less impactful than the main one
Damn now I’m looking at my initial pics and think it was better before i started messing (on the front)
Love the front, looks awesome 😎 good luck! 🤞
Probably found something similar ( at least from the description) gsw master medium or scale 75 dispel magic medium. Will try one of them and let you all know 🙂
Is it not the same as just matt medium?
Don't know yet, producer advertising it like " can be used to increase the paint's ability to level, increase its transparency, extend color, increase integrity, ease the flow of paint, extend its drying time, and add flexibility and adhesion." But what is true - will see.
Sorry for a little offtopic ^^`
That sounds like medium to me haha
The s75 one specifically is for their ‘instant’ range (same as contrast etc)
@covert sandal @tacit ridge
On the front - gorgeous, at the back of the sword indeed to yellow imo 😉
Would you shift it to white, grey, desaturate it? @tacit ridge
Desaturate a bit and include - in a subtle way - the other earth colors you placed in the background. Not making them as a strong reflection, just as a shifting hue of the blade
Thanks. I used cadmium yellow on the blade when maybe should have stuck to ochre like the background!
(I’ve been following this because I ordered the bust version of this model, but am no where near as good as you so trying to soak in as much as possible - thank you for posting your process!)
I'm not that good or experienced as ch4lwa, but also for me adding some reddish brownish tones as on armour will make a job and break a little this strong yellow- blue contrast 🙂
what is wrong with me, keep messing with it
Was gonna start skin today but feel too ill
Wow now it's looking so cool 😎
