#Spotlight at night attempt, please C&C

I'm testing out an army scheme, the idea is that the entire army is at night time, but each model has his own spotlight (ties into the lore of the army).
I wanted to punch up the colours in the 'lit' part as much as I could, and I stuggled with that. Similarly I want to convey darkness on the backside of the model better.

I thought it would be a fun way of trying to paint an army, and kind of a cheat, this way I can spend more time on a smaller part of the model. Resulting in an overall fast model, that has a striking effect (painted hopefully well).

Please, if you have ideas how I can better convey the visual effects of the spotlight and the darkness let me know.

With this model I was fighting some of the paints allot, the gold recipe I'll swap out, the scarf I'm not happy with, the plume I am happy with.

I also feel like your light wraps around the volumes. I think a spotlight really just hits the perpendicular surfaces so you get deep shadows on the undersides of the volumes even on the illuminated side

thats a good point. I dont think I want to do the harsh shadows in the illuminated parts..
One reason is that it would make models looking down or under a canopy super boring and probably unrecognizable, but it would be more realistic.. damn

Yeah that’s true

One issue with this color scheme is that your opponent will get the awesome frontal view, while from your perspective they would be hard to distinguish 😢

#

Maybe paint only the backs lol

I read the description and instantly thought these would inherently just look half painted, but looking at your pictures I think you're really selling the effect.

The one thing that stands out for me is the lack of light on the base.
Show us some of the colors at the front of the base and perhaps even paint cast shadows from the legs.

Thanks for the feedback and compliment! Regarding the base, my original idea was to have black bases with purple tufts and highly saturated models. When I chose the light thing, I didn't reevaluate the base plan and kept it black. I've put some tufts on it now, purple ones in the front and black ones in the back, that might help. But I also might need to add colour to the dirt. I'll post a pic with the tufts tomorrow when I get my shit in order. I'm curious what you think of it then.

It’s a really cool idea. I think part of what would sell it more if you concentrated highest value at the top. Right now it’s a little too uniformly bright from the top to bottom of the mini. A spotlight would fade in intensity relatively quickly in that environment so the feet/lower areas would be closer in value to what you currently have on the back but still obviously more warm tone

good point! I tried that with their back foot, but I should also have done it on the front foot. I'll keep this in mind for the next model.

I think to sell the effect there should be muted versions of each color visible on the dark side of the miniature. I really love the inside of the right leg, but it feels odd that the whole thing would be this charcoal black on the other side

But also - the base is going to be SUPER crucial to sell the effect

if you see that lit spotlight with the corresponding shadwo on the base, itll sell
