#Painting arms crackling with power from within

I'm a firm believer that Sci-Fi and Fantasy are thematic distinctions, not worldbuilding ones, so I want to paint these Corvus Belli Infinity models as if their mechanical arms are actually just coursing with magical power from within. I can see two ways of doing this:

  1. Go from bright inside > base for the skintone > highlight for skintone

  2. Basecoat white > wash blue > layer and highlight skintone

Has anyone here ever done anything similar, and what did you learn from the process? Anyone here who can prick holes in either of these paint plans?

I would probably use the same approach as for lava veins. You need to have lots of tonal variations in the energy to make it look like it’s flowing or it’s just going to look like blue shadows.
